IC II
Re: IC II
Gardo
Nodding at Telemachus' suggestion, Gardo gathers his stuff and heads towards the meadhall. That evening, if he sees the Baron, he will approach and ask that they speak in the morning in private. Otherwise, he will look for an opportunity to speak to the Baron the next day.

Gardo
He looks around for a moment, a bit of uncertainty on his face. With a shrug, he starts talking. "We still need to inform you about what we learned from the orc but this is something different. When we went north to Kimrid, we encountered some treants. They almost mistook us as siderenos. They were unhappy. It seems your expansion to the east is causing them some concern. I would like to suggest that you redirect your expansion efforts to the south. They were agreeable with us, especially since we took care of a small chaos creature for them that was poisoning them and the forest."
He leans in. "Hearing of the orcs getting more organized is concerning. You may need the help of the treants to assist in protecting your north border. Making them mad would not help anyone. I tried to see if they were around as I came back south but didn't see them. You know, I think I remember them saying something about orcs as well."
"Well, you are in charge of your own lands and make your own decisions. I remember my previous boss wanting all information he could get when making big decisions. You and my previous boss are very alike so I thought you would want the same type of information."

Baron Xelazo
"Hmm." The Baron purses his metallic lips. "You have given me much to think about, even moreso since I have yet to have gotten the full report on your scouting mission. Why don't you report to my offices first thing in the morning and we shall discuss further."

Draea
The adventurers rise in the morning to a sky leaden with clouds, and after a quick breakfast are summoned to the Baron's offices. He is seated behind a desk, studying a sheaf of parchments. Valru is already there, standing at his shoulder. "Valru has filled me in on the result of your patrol," he says, "but I would like to hear your version, and, more importantly, your impressions."

Feargus
"Thank you for seeing us. We ran into a mixed force of orcs and ogres in the direction that Valru suspected. Even without the power of our mage, we were able to destroy them, taking some casualties in our ranks. We also gained valuable intelligence from an orc. Namely, this group belonged to the Shattered Tusk clan, the bulk of which dwells a day's walk to the west of the battlefield. His Chieftain, Ahpruk the Angry, owes fealty to a greater power further to the west, one only referred to as "Death on the Wind". Ahpruk received an emissary from his master nearly two months ago, ordering his clan to begin raids on the your community."

"Hmmm. Yes, that is what Valru has said. I am concerned by this on several fronts; the resurgent orcish threat, seeming to deliberately targeting my domain, and guided by some unseen intelligence. Four years prior, when I met the Snake that Strikes on the field of battle and slew him, the orcish forces disbanded. They were acting with intelligence, yes, but it was an intelligence driven by a voracious hunger, that of Chaos seeking to overwhelm and consume the forces of Law. It mattered not if they were raiding Draea or Kimrid or the Principality; there was a guiding force, but it was undirected . . . impersonal. To be specifically targeted like this? Who do you think is this Death on the Wind?"

"Outside of a force like that dragon, it could be any sentient force of Chaos that sees your land as an opportunity since you are un-allied at present with larger forces. Now please realize I am not recommending a course of action, only speculating on motives. Either way, now that we know that "Death on the Wind" is the force steering this assault, we can suspect that destroying the orcs will likely only delay it, not stop the assaults on your land."

Draea
The Baron's head turns slowly and smoothly, as a well-oiled bearing might, but in slow motion, and regards Newton with piercing eyes. "I . . . was not expecting you to say that. Could it be? Could Burnnkenkrayn still live? And still nurse a vendetta after all these years . . . ?" He looks back down at his desk. "You have given me much to think about, this morning, and when I was still digesting what I was told last night. I must think on this, and consult my advisors. Come back to me this evening, 'ere we break bread, and we will see what there is to be said."

The Baron's Library
Shorty after noon Telemachus finishes reading the second book. There is much more on the construction of artifacts to capture and distill the energy contained within ley lines -- incredibly complicated formulas and mathematics that make his head hurt and seem to point to impossible solutions -- but there are two items he finds that may be of immediate use:
The first is a map. It is incredibly broad and lacking in detail, but seems to show a number of existing ley lines, both major and minor. The book does warn, however, that ley lines will occasionally shift over the years, much as a corporeal river would. Without knowing exactly how old the book is it would be difficult to determine how much time has passed since the map was scribed.
The second is a spell contained within the pages. It is a spell of the second Circle, and allows the caster to sense the presence and basic intensity of a ley line within a given distance.

Zellar
Zellar will visit Father Odos to determine if he's found any members of his craftpriesthood who are interested in leaving Draea on a life of interfaith adventure.

Gardo
As he turns to head off, Gardo pauses then looks back to the Baron. "I was going to see about sparring with you. Since we are going to head out to fight, I guess it will have to wait. No sense in possibly injuring ourselves before going out to destroy more spawn of Chaos." He nods politely then moves on.

"Can't say there are any priests available at the moment, I'm afraid," he says, shaking his head, "but a young lad -- softskin, like you -- came looking for you folks a few days back. He's Draea-born through and through, but his parents were one of the first human refugees that sought shelter here. This lad -- Owulf -- says he is looking for adventure, and was wondering if you were hiring. He's a good kid, works hard, always practicing with his blade, working on his balance."

"Perhaps we will get that chance one day," he says, nodding.

War Council
The adventurers return to the Baron's office that evening to find the Baron seated, a map spread out before him, and Valru, Odos, and two other ironskin warriors that look vaguely familiar to the adventurers. After welcoming the companions, and offering brandy to those interested, the Baron gets down to business. "Welcome, new friends from the south! It was a chance meeting on the road that brought us together, and I am not one to ignore the call of fortune when they knock. After our meeting this morning I spoke with Odos, and he in turn communed with Yster, asking of him three questions: Is the dragon Burnnkenkrayn the motive force behind the raids on our lands? Will the raids continue until the dragon is dealt with? Do the orcs of the Shattered Tusk know their patrol was wiped out? The answers were, in order: Yes, yes, and no."
The Baron sits back and cracks his knuckles. "I have not the force, nor the ability to deal with this matter myself. Therefore, I would ask if you could be my instruments in this. There are two parts: to destroy the village of the Shattered Tusk and to seek out and slay the dragon Burnnkenkrayn. For the first I will pay you the sum of ten thousand gold. For the second I will pay twice that. If you are willing to attempt the first -- the near-term goal, I believe -- I can lend you Valru and five lancers. They are siderenos warriors mounted upon our heavy horse; slow and ponderous, but deadly in close quarters. I believe that there will likely be information in the village pertaining to the whereabouts, and potentially the aims, of this dragon that vexes me so. Upon the completion of the first task we will discuss the second. What say you to this?"
