Re: OOC I
This might be a better question for the Session Zero topic. You guys, while discussing character concepts, can start to feed off each other... and that's the place to do it.kalstone wrote:What is everyone thinking about character classes? I don't really have a particular class in mind, so I can be flexible.

Also, I want to highlight a new topic I created:
If anyone has any questions -- big or small -- about anything specific to 5e or how something works, that is the place to post it.

Re: OOC I
I am not automatically going to create private forums for every character like I normally do (since a lot of times they end up going unused). However, do not hesitate to let me know if you're interested in having one for your character. I love them, and love to use them, and will happily set them up upon request.

Re: OOC I
What type of campaign do you see this being? Urban, dungeon, other? Trying to determine if a social character would be out of place.
Also, you had mentioned a live campaign at some point, a menagerie of sorts. Gathering rare creatures for a collector of sorts. Are you still thinking about that?

Re: OOC I
I can definitely create one for you, but I did create this '5e Rule Questions?' topic specifically for this purpose.Darklin2 wrote:I would like one just for my questions. New to 5e

Re: OOC I
I'm hoping it will be all of those things. A social character will most definitely not be out of place.Monsieur Rose wrote:What type of campaign do you see this being? Urban, dungeon, other? Trying to determine if a social character would be out of place.
I still love the idea I was going to use in my 'Unseen Servant: Live Games' plans, but a live game is not really in my immediate plans. Regretfully.Monsieur Rose wrote:Also, you had mentioned a live campaign at some point, a menagerie of sorts. Gathering rare creatures for a collector of sorts. Are you still thinking about that?
I won't rule out using the "bounty hunter" idea -- where a group of characters is tasked with acquiring different items for an interested party -- in a game here if I can work it in. Possibly in this game. If that's something the group would be interested in.
Again, I don't have formal ideas for either game I'm launching. My plan will be to make much of it up on-the-fly, taking into account the build of the party -- their races, classes, backgrounds, and the requested group bonds -- when deciding the various challenges I can/should present.
But, circling back to your original question, expect these challenges to be varied. In location. In goal. In the type of challenge to overcome. Etc...
I hope this helps.

Re: OOC I
Just checking in. I do see that everyone has a character added to the campaign in D&D Beyond, which is great.
Here a quick party overview:
I will admit that I have not been paying too close attention to the 'Session Zero' topic.
How are the bonds/relationships coming along? How close are we to being ready to kick things off?
Here a quick party overview:
- Rex:
- Kari, Half-Orc, Fighter
- Monsieur Rose:
- Rocco, Human, Bard
- kalstone:
- Wyreth, Half-Elf, Druid
- Darklin2:
- Loran, High Elf, Wizard

To everyone:
What is your opinion of the variant encumbrance rule? I did play around with it a bit when dabbling with different characters and did find it pretty prohibitive. I'm all for the hint of realism in a fantasy game, but not if it is going to distract from the fun.

Re: OOC I
I answered your questions there so won't repeat here, but connections below.
Kari has been helping Rocco with smuggling for over a year.
Wyreth is from the village that Kari sails out of and they know each other but Wyreth doesn't trust her.
Kari has most likely met Loran since she hangs out with Rocco and his sister.

Re: OOC I
For encumbrance we are trying the rule from here. http://hackslashmaster.blogspot.com/201 ... s-and.html
You can carry a number of significant items equal to your Strength. A significant item would be a suit of light or medium armor, a weapon, a bundle 5 of torches, a potion, a vial of oil, a lantern, 200 coins, etc. A suit of heavy armor or a bulky item takes 2 slots. If you have more than 1/2 your slots filled, you are encumbered per the variant rules in the 5th edition Player’s Handbook on page 176. If you are wearing a suit of armor that grants disadvantage on Stealth (Dex) checks, you are encumbered. If you have more than 3/4 of your slots filled, you are heavily encumbered. Let common sense carry the day.
We added heavy weapons and weapons with reach as 2 items as well. Seems to be working and its easier to calculate then keeping track of all the weights.

Re: OOC I
That's an interesting idea.Rex wrote:For encumbrance we are trying the rule from here. http://hackslashmaster.blogspot.com/201 ... s-and.html
But...
I do want to manage all aspects of the character in D&D Beyond, and want to select from only the available options: The 'No Encumbrance' isn't a consideration. It's between 'Use Encumbrance' and 'Variant Encumbrance,' and even I am finding myself of the opinion that the later is pretty prohibitive.
But, if you guys are okay with it, we'll keep it. Otherwise, I'm fine to switch to the "normal" encumbrance setting.

Re: OOC I
We are. In fact, I have a 'Rations and Resting' house rule.kalstone wrote: Are we tracking food and water? If so, I think it may make sense to relax the requirements.
Let's go ahead and change the 'Encumbrance Type' from "Variant Encumbrance" to the "Use Encumbrance" option.
I will update the 'D&D Beyond: Character Sheet' topic to reflect this.

Re: OOC I
Any encumbrance works for me.
So far it looks like Rocco:
So far it looks like Rocco:
- Works with Kari to smuggle goods out of the city.
- Has befriended Wyreth at one of the small coastal towns, and they have traveled together for a few months(?)
- Had a romantic relationship with Loran previously, as she and Riley (Rocco's Sister) are friends.--That still good with you, Darklin?

I feel like this group is getting close, too. I will start to do a quick review of the characters of the next couple of days and maybe kick this thing off soon. Maybe as early as Friday.
