CHAPTER 10c: The Insectillian Hunt

#1 Post by Norjax »

...

Hagalton, 321D/81 (Morning)

At dawn, you begin the journey back to the marker dolmen and down the tunnel into the Crack in the Earth. Once at the cliff dock, Yar assembles a rack of ballast on the edge of the rock outcropping. He secures a cable, connected to this rack, to a mount on the trawler. The mechanic grabs a covered bucket out of a storage chest and smears its contents onto the side of the vessel. “Prey scent,” he says.

Image

“We’ll dive into the depths of the ‘Crack,” Yar explains. “When the beast takes the bait, I’ll release the ballast and we’ll surface into the zone of stability. Then we will try to kill it before it withdraws.”

You board the trawler and Yar supervises your methods of lashing to the vessel. He checks the strength of each connection, nods his approval, and indicates it’s time for departure. The eccentric kneels next to the cable crank and slowly withdraws the vessel into the ‘sky’ of the chasm. The trawler drops at a steep angle through the zone of stability and into the lower maelstrom. The contraption bucks slightly as swirling clouds of mist and smoke whip around the vessel. An eerie silence engulfs you and indiscernible odors invade your olfactory receptors. Yar locks the crank, takes his position on the rear deck, lashes one leg to the harpoon gun and waits.

Gaps in the multicolored vapor allows visibility up to 200 yards away. The sheer faces of the chasm are exposed now and then, with some of you spotting dried blood splats on the wall. Everyone scans their field of vision for signs of movement inside the kaleidoscope of colors. At first, you see various clumps of solid matter crash into each other that coalesce or shatter. An occasional flicker of light illuminates the cloud strata, rippling like a wave. Then, the trawler lurches up followed by a loud ’THUMP’. A dark brown mass of “sludge” rolls up the left side of the vessel and disappears into the maelstrom above. Yar signals to ignore the object and you continue your watch. After 15-20 minutes of waiting, Kurot cuts the release cord so the front white signal flag springs erect. An insectillian approaches!

Yar sees the signal and pulls the lanyard to release the ballast rack. The trawler jolts and rushes back up into the zone of stability. The envelope of silence is gone, and you hear the ’SCREECH!’ of the mutant monstrosity as it joins you in calm. The creature flies past and disappears into the upper maelstrom before swooping out and taking an attack vector against your floating contraption!

Silvestri

Before they set of Silvestri would have asked if it is safe to use the energy blaster in the maelstrom.

Denslow waits until it is in range and then hits it with an exploding fruit.

Denslow Initiative [1d20+3] = 8+3 = 11
Denslow "have an apple" fruit attack [1d20+2] = 7+2 = 9, dmg [1d4] = 4 oops, wrong macro. If I need to use that one, I will spend 2 luck to bring that to 13 and a hit at 20'. Else.
Denslow "Gala" explosive apple mutation check [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14
30' range, dmg [1d8] = 1

As the insectillian comes about for its attack run, Kurot draws a bead on it with his rifle. When the giant bug comes into medium range, the android fires twice in quick succession, then reaches for his stun rod for a melee attack.

Rifle (Short/Medium range): [1d20+2] = 7+2 = 9 (+2 if short range) [1d12] = 4
Rifle (Short/Medium range): [1d20+2] = 5+2 = 7 (+2 if short range) [1d12] = 2
Stun rod: [1d20+3] = 9+3 = 12 [1d6] = 5

Hopefully something that big is easy to hit...

MacMak wish he could use his melee weapon, but feels safer with his old crossbow.

He aims to the beast and shoot!

Farmanus

Farmanus' eyes and mouth widen as the giant beast nears the vessel. He readies his spear and when the time is right, he attacks!

Initiative [1d20+3] = 8+3 = 11
Attack w/spear [1d20+5] = 20+5 = 25
Crit!
Spear damage [1d8+3] = 5+3 = 8
Crit table III [1d12] = 9
Crit die 9 damage [2d6] = 7

OoC: Farmanus hopes he made all those rolls correctly.

Yar's Trawler, the Crack in the Earth; 321D/81 (Morning)

The gargantuan aberration bears down on the trawler like a titanic bird of prey. It lets out another ’SCREECH!’ and its four tentacles whip and writhe violently! With mercurial speed, the monstrous entity dives to strike you, the small parasites that inhabit the trawler!

Image

Simultaneous with the beast’s approach, Bruce spreads his feet to gain a steady posture and fires two shots from his pigmonn pistol into the insectillian’s body! (5+8 = 13pt. dmg)

Its tooth-filled beak snaps into Denslow (DMG 5), shredding some bark loose. It whips at him with a tentacle (Miss), but the clawed pad passes over his branches.

MacMak, Farmanus and Yar are clipped by tentacle claws (DMG 1, ea) as the beast passes over the trawler.

Farmanus holds steady as a claw from the insecillian’s tentacle skips across his shoulder. The uberstrain human plants his feet, thrusts his spear up into one of the beast’s wings (8pt. dmg) and rakes the head of the weapon through the webbed membrane (CRIT: 7pt. dmg), ripping a hole in the appendage!

Denslow avoids the worst of the creature’s bite by spinning aside and then skips a volatile apple (1pt. dmg) across the top of its head, which explodes some distance away.

Shaidar aims the scavenger blaster pistol at the head of the aberration, but the bony mass simply absorbs the energy blast. (Miss)

Kurot waits for the monster to enter medium range and fires a shot from his rifle. The bullet harmlessly passes through a thin wing membrane. (Miss) The construct slings the rifle and draws his stun rod, reaching out to his limits. The android is unable to extend enough, and the rod sweeps air. (Miss)

MacMak shakes the cut from the monstrosity’s tentacle and trusts in his crossbow. The mutant seagull fires and sticks a bolt into the creature’s body. (2pt. dmg)

Yar ducks as the beast passes over the rear of the floating vessel. He takes a parting shot with a barbed hand dart. (Miss)

OOC: The insectillian’s AC is 17.
Total damage inflicted = 31.

Denslow yells, My bite is worse than my bark! as he throws another exploding fruit.

Denslow Initiative [1d20+3] = 14+3 = 17
Denslow "Gala" explosive apple mutation check [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21. YES!
75 ft range, [1d4] = 4 fruit for 2d6 damage each: dmg [2d6] = 5, [2d6] = 9, [2d6] = 9, [2d6] = 9

(More damage with this one attack then the whole party did last round. Awesome!)

Kurot reaches for his rifle again. He draws slow, careful aim on the insect as it turns for another attack, waiting almost until the gargantuan creature is nearly on the trawler (short range) before firing.

Initiative: [1d20] = 4
Rifle (Aimed shot, short/medium range): [1d24+2] = 16+2 = 18 (+2 if short range) [2d12] = 14

Satisfied with this new strategy, he keeps aim on the insectillian, lining up his next shot.

Just to be clear, the order of Kurot's actions this round is: aim, fire, aim (so that he can do fire, aim, fire next round).

Silvestri decides to swap to his rifle, and waits until the creature gets close (short range) before firing:

Initiative: [1d20] = 5
Rifle (Short Range 120): [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23, dmg [1d12] = 5
CRIT!
Crit: [1d10-1] = 7-1 = 6

Farmanus

Initiative [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23
Attack w/spear [1d20+5] = 17+5 = 22
Spear damage [1d8+3] = 8+3 = 11

Bracing the weapon tightly with both meaty hands, Farmanus holds the tip of his spear vertically above, allowing the monstrosity to split itself open as it passes directly overhead.

Bruce is ready as the chitinous gargantuan returns.

Initiative [1d20+4] = 6+4 = 10+Zon[1d4] = 3
Pistol Medium Range [1d20+6] = 10+6 = 16
Pistol Damage [1d10] = 2
Pistol Medium Range [1d16+6] = 7+6 = 13
Pistol Damage [1d10] = 3

While the shots appear ineffective, The Android understands that through their mutual effort they have a good chance to bring the beast down.

Yar’s Trawler, the Crack in the Earth; 321D/81 (Morning)

Sustaining significant damage, the great mutant beast swings about and dives at the trawler for another attack pass. It bellows out a ’SCREECH!’ and aims at Silvestri’s location on the deck of the floating vessel.

Image

The tooth-filled maw of the insectillian opens and coughs a 2ft diameter ball of mucus forward at the psionist. The sphere of slime impacts Silvestri in the chest, wrapping and enveloping his torso. The mutant human drops his rifle and flails his arms, pulling through the mucus mass.

(Fails save, -1d on all attacks for 5 rounds due to entanglement in slime)

He fights the sticky substance and frees his rifle, adhered to his side on the sling. Pulling the weapon to his shoulder, he fires a shot that impacts the creature’s torso and sends a painful ripple through its hide! (5+6=11pt. dmg; CRIT “breaks ribs”)

(I’ll allow the CRIT as if it were a 16 on Silvestri’s entangled d16 attack die. Please use a d16 for the next four rounds.)

One tentacle swipes at Bruce, tied to the roof of the trawler. The synthetic dodges the appendage and it swings over his head. (Miss) He fires two ineffective shots (Miss/miss) hoping to down the flying entity.

The clawed mitt of a second tentacle rakes across MacMak’s chest (DMG 4) as the mutant seagull prepares to fire his crossbow. The avian manimal releases his weapon’s bolt and it strikes into the neck of the creature. (6pt. dmg)

Denslow is the next victim of a slithering organic whip. More bark is shredded by monstrous claws! (DMG 7) The plantient ripples his branches, generating and launching four explosive fruits that impact and explode against the underbelly of the aberration! (32pt. dmg!)

Kurot shifts to obtain an attack position, but meets the clawed pad of the final tentacle with his shoulder (DMG 6) before the beast passes over. He aims as the insectillian vectors aft and hits the mark with a well-placed shot! (14pt. dmg)

Farmanus raises his spear and holds it firm, allowing the movement of the monster to rip a gash into its belly! (11pt. dmg)

Yar waits and fires his harpoon at the passing target, but misses the shot. The mutant beast ascends into the upper clouds and momentarily disappears!

OOC: The insectillian’s AC is 17.
Total damage inflicted = 94.

Farmanus

Farmanus switches to the longsword The Nice Man lent him. His long years of military training have taken over, releasing him from apprehension and fear. The human times his next attack well, slicing at one of the thrashing appendages of the abomination!

Initiative [1d20+3] = 4+3 = 7
Attack w/longsword [1d20+5] = 12+5 = 17
Longsword damage [1d8+3] = 3+3 = 6

Farmanus is -2 to hit I believe because of the way he is lashed to the trawler. 15?
