A Hero is Me

#1 Post by Daos Soulstaff »

Hello all, and well met. You all can call me Daos. I've been playing (mostly DMing, actually) 2nd Edition AD&D for a little over 15 years now. It's actually the only system I really know. I'm currently running two separate games over on another forum, but I'm hoping to be able to be a player again soon.

In terms of settings, I'm really knowledgeable on Dragonlance. I know a little bit of Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Planescape, and Spelljammer. I know almost nothing to nothing about any other published settings, but as long as there's a wiki or something out there, I don't mind doing research.

I really enjoy roleplaying, combat, exploring, leveling-up and so forth equally. I tend to prefer games with a mix of those things. A game that was nothing but mindless combat would get dull quickly, but a game where we just spend the entire time chatting in a bar, having drinks, would likewise get boring, too.

I don't like being coddled. If I get the impression the DM is protecting the players, I quickly lose interest. After all, if there's no real danger, then combat isn't exciting, it's monotonous.

I have the most fun when my character's actions have consequences. If, for instance, I save the baker and his family from those goblins, I want to see them again later on and be able to check up on them. If they just disappear into the ether and are never seen again, that's no fun. I like having proof that my character's actions are shaping the world in some way.

Also, I really like playing a hero. I almost always play good characters, so in a party full of evil or neutral characters, I probably won't fit in well. Although I'm not against playing non-good characters; I may do so as a lark, but overall, I prefer sticking to good.

I tend to favor humans or half-elves for races and clerics, mages and paladins for classes--but honestly, I'm happy to play anything or fill any role.

Finally, I have plenty of freetime and can post multiple times per day if necessary (assuming my internet cooperates, that is).

I guess that's the long and short of it; at least everything I can think of, at any rate. I hope to join some games soon.

Welcome Daos Soulstaff, for PbP you've come to the right place. The good thing about Unseen Servant is that you can find a game or DM that fits you. We've got a couple killer DMs here (heh, see what I did there! ;)
Anyway welcome aboard. Glad to have you!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Oh, rredmond, you slay me! (see what I did there?)

(Actually, not yet you haven't...)

Welcome to the Unseen Servant, Daos! There is a nice variety of rule sets used on the US forums, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a game that works for you. Don't be afraid to branch out into a game using different rules! A lot of the games here are using D&D or clone rules that are pre-2e, so... they should be simpler, right? :)

If you have any questions about being a player/DM here on the Unseen Servant, be sure to check out the following threads:

viewtopic.php?f=33&t=858
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=859

I suspect you won't find much new in any of that information, though, since you are obviously well-versed in PbP gaming.

If you have any forum-related questions, certainly feel free to ask!

Good luck and, again, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome! As for learning new game systems, well, I'm a lazy, lazy man. Also, poor. I thought about picking up the core rulebook for Pathfinder once--$50? Yeah, no.

Labyrinth Lords and OSRIC are both free, FYI. Labyrinth Lords is a clone of B/X and OSRIC is a clone of 1e.

Oh, and Delving Deeper is a "restatement" of the OD&D rules. It is also available for free.

I'm late to the party, but offer my welcome nonetheless.

While 1E is probably still the best represented edition on the boards here, I sense a stronger interest in 2E forming, which I welcome because, while I'm still pretty new to 2E myself, I find that I really like (and dare I say, prefer) it.

Hope you find a game soon and enjoy your stay here.

I keed, I keed, all inferior versions of 1E are welcome here. What? Wait, I was kidding... come on... just don't send Alethan to get me... okay, okay, I'm leaving!

No seriously, it's all good. We even have a 3.5 edition games, and stuff like Dungeon Crawl Classics and etc. It's kind of fun. It's not my sort of game, but it doesn't mean I don't peek in every so often to try and figure out those rulesets... and what I might like to steal from them. ;)

Be well!

That's okay, I'm used to people booing 2E. (Although it's usually the 3E'ers and 4E'ers that are doing it!) I just pretend you are saying "Boo-urns!" instead.

We do?!

Hmmm...maybe it is time for a referendum. Let the people vote on whether to keep the site pure. Cull the plague at its onset. That kind of thing... ;) :)

Psh 2e booers can go stick their head in the mud. ;) I'm a 2e person myself. Granted I do also play basic, 1e and now 5e.

Long overdue welcome to the side Daos.

Is Raise Thread a 2E or 3E spell?
I know it’s not 1E but I’m not sure of later editions.
