Re: Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"
Darklin moves back to shore seeing the beast starting the labor contractions. He swaps places with the ranger. Setting Daisy on the sand by the water line.
We have done what we can. Let's see what the ranger is made of. I will keep watch. Assist him if you can verbally. I will watch the tree line.
He then moves back to his pack where he flaps his head like a dog to get all the water out of it and shoulders his pack and hefts his bow. Turning to the tree line to watch for invaders, he nocks an arrow.

Oh, bless her heart! Ain't that precious! Daisy watches, wavering between Nurse and Fangirl.

Re: Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"
What Is This Thing?
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
The momma water monster rolls over on her side and lets out a loud bellow as Cealwyn moves closer, attempting to aid in the delivery of whatever is about to come out of her. The ranger knows all about the nature of things, so he hopes that this wont be all that much different from a normal bovine delivery.
He sees the calf immediately start to exit its mother, and with a few more grunts and groans, it pops out completely. Sadly, the wounds of the mother must have caused serious problems in the development of her offspring, because the calf is barely moving once it splashes out into the water. Not sure how to handle this situation, the adventurers decide to back away from the action to give the mother all the space she needs.
After only a short time, it appears pretty obvious that her calf wont make it. The mother rolls it around in the surf a few times, trying to get it moving again, but alas, the baby calf is too stunted to survive. Not ready to give up on her offspring, the creature bellows and slaps its fins in the water for a while until it is certain that her calf is dead. Then, lifting its enormous head up to the group again with a palpable sadness in her eyes, as if to say thanks for the help with her wounds, it slowly starts to waddle back out into the deeper water, leaving her stillborn calf lying in the shallows for nature to take over.
Actions?
Cealwyn 14/14
Glansandi 10/10
Dexter 8/8
Daisy 9/9 0/3 first
Sophie 6/6
Darklin 8/8 DM,CL,RM 1/1 first

How much does the dead calf weigh? I know walruses are huge, but not sure about newborn offspring.
Unsure of the feelings of his comrades, Dexter says, very softly, "There are people starving in Beach Town."

Cealwyn Blackthorn
The ranger's frown deepens as he notes the calf's weak movements. He waits until the mother has ceased her violent flopping and the water calms. Once she's at a safe distance, he wades quickly toward the small creature and glances back at his companions. "I know it's useless," he calls as he reaches down and begins to rub vigorously all over the beast's thick hide. "But I can't let it die without trying. Sometimes we could save calves like this back home."
He keeps it up for several moments, attempting to force the blood to move through the animal's skin. "It's useless," he mutters with a heavy sigh, his hands finally ceasing their rapid motion. They rest upon the calf's relatively small form for a long moment, then fall away as he turns to wade back to shore. A great sadness is reflected in Cealwyn's blue eyes as he reaches dry ground.
"You're not wrong," he says quietly to Dexter. "Shall we wait for her to swim farther away and drag it ashore?"

Daisy
Daisy watches the attempts to revive the calf. She's visibly angry about something, but tears flow freely.Poor little fella.
According to Google, newborn walrus weigh 100-175 pounds.

"Daisy," Dexter says. "The way I see it, if it hadn't been for you, the mother and the calf would have both died. At least now, the mother has a chance of having other calves. It might not be a win, but it is not the loss that it might have been but for you."
Turning to the Ranger, "I think she's left it. I doubt she would concern herself with us taking it." Dexter tests that theory by wading out into the shallow water to attach a rope to the calf.

Taking The Good With The Bad
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
The huge creature seems to be content swimming away with its now much better health still in tact, paddling slowly away from the group standing on the sandy beach.
The discussion turns to whether they should try bringing the calf back to town or not, eventually resulting in Dexter moving out into the shallows to attach a rope to the dead animal. The mother doesn't appear to be interested in her deceased offspring, but it does turn its huge form back to the beach after it gets about 50 feet from shore.
There it stops, slowly bobbing up and down on the calm waves. It is clearly looking in the adventurers direction when it begins slapping one of its massive flippers on the top of the water loudly.

Re: Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"
Darklin being a fisherman should know this is a danger warning signal for animals of the ocean.
Intell check- [1d20] = 8 Intell Check
Made it big.
GET OUT OF THE WATER NOW. THAT IS THE WARNING SIGN OF DANGER FOR OCEAN CREATURES. EVERYONE HEAD TO THE TREE LINE. SOMEON OR THING COMING.
Looks left and right up the beach while heading into the edge of the jungle with bow still nocked and ready.

Hearing Darklin's warning, Dexter moves quickly for the shore, holding the other end of the rope he attached to the calf. "Not going to lose this," he grunts as his short legs pull through the water. "They gotta have it in town." As soon as he gets to the sand, he starts hauling on the rope as he makes for the tree line. "A little help, please."

"I've got you, mate," Cealwyn says and grips the rope with Dexter. He leans into it and they make quick progress. Upon reaching dry earth, he readies his bow and visually sweeps the area for signs of trouble. "Never a dull moment," he mutters again.

Taking The Good With The Bad
Sunday, the 14th of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Hot, Muggy, Buggy
Darklin is absolutely certain that he knows exactly what this creature is trying to tell them from a distance.
He shouts for everyone to get out of the water and head for the jungle, his voice carrying loudly on the soft sea breeze. A flock of small jungle birds fly up form their hidden perches in the tree line, screeching loudly as they fly away, clearly frightened form all the shouting.
The party secures the 100 pounds of meat up onto the shore before following the elf's orders to run. Everyone regroups at the edge of the jungle and watches the behemoth in the water staring back at them with a blank expression. The beast slaps its fin on the water a few more times and rears up out of the surf, diving straight down, still in the same place it was when it first got the groups attention. It repeats this process of slapping and diving straight down a few more times as the group watches from a good distance away.

Dexter, panting with the effort, looks at the Walrus.... diving repeatedly in one place and NOT swimming away in terror.... Then looks at Darklin. "Are you sure that's a warning? She doesn't look threatened."

Re: Quest #24 "Spying On Bings Pirates"
Darklin shrugs his shoulders and says,
Sorry. i could have sworn that is a danger signal. I have seen Seals make that signal when the sharks come in close to land. Maybe she is trying to get our attention. Looks like she may want us to follow her.
Can anyone swim? I can but have to strip out of my armor.
And I didn't put anything on under it. That's why the pirates didn't take it off of me.

"I can swim. I've lived by the Old River all my life," says Dexter. "But I've never actually been swimming in the deep blue." He eyes the area just off shore critically. "Water is water, I suppose. Anyone want to go with me?"
Just how far out IS the mother walrus?

She is about 60’ off shore, which looks a bit longer to Dexter.

"Hold on just a moment," Dexter says. "There might be something out there she is trying to show us, and we might want to bring it back. Let's take some kind of float and some rope with us, in case we can't carry it back." Dexter casts about for a suitable piece of wood or other item that might float and could be attached to something. "It'll also help us if we get too tired with the swimming and diving."
