Feargus
"...always bring a cleric", Feargus mutters. His eyes search out Ribar as they move past the dead village.

Fourthmonth, Fourteenthday
Hex 237.126
The adventurers press on, camping for the night in Hex 237.126. The night passes uneventfully.
Fourthmonth, Fifteenthday
The adventurers rise in the morning and break camp, ready to head out. They continue north along the road. After about an hour of travel they come across a grizzly sight; five spears have been thrust into the ground just a few feet off the road on the eastern side, each with the partially decomposing head of what looks to be an orc stuck onto the exposed end. Flies and yellowjackets buzz around the skulls. From a distance it looks like the heads are at least a week or two old.

Telemachus
The mage looks at the spears but it's not really his area of expertise.
"Casfrea, do you know of any creature or group of same that practices this method of... displaying their trophies? Or do you recognize the make of spear?"

It's hard to tell. He doesn't see any tracks, but the spears look almost like they were crafted by Men. Smooth shafts of ash, with long metal tips just barely visible.

Gardo
"Where would those have come from? I didn't think we were even half way to Kimmy... or whatever it is called. Wouldn't that be a long distance for their people to patrol?"

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally.

"Yeah. To leave nice spears like this means they make more. Maybe a village that our orc friend did not know about? Should we look for signs of travel, especially for side paths near here? Heads on a stick should be a warning that nearby people won't tolerate certain beings."

"Yeah...a warning to orcs. That's all this can be. And made by a people who have an ability to make weapons on par with our own. This isn't a bad sign...yet nor is it a good sign."

Fourthmonth, Fifteenthday
It's not two hours later when the adventurers come across the first sign of civilization; the forest thins, starting in subhex 0706 of Hex 236.124, and shows signs of deliberate cultivation; trees felled by axe, drag marks from mules or oxen. Continuing on, the woods open up even more onto cultivated land, a wide, sloping hill dotted here and there with fruit trees, great plots of land planted with a variety of vegetables or fenced off for pigs and cattle, and at the very top of the hill sits a stone castle, pennant flags flapping from its three towers.
Off to the east, where the forest begins to thicken again, the adventurers see a group of a half dozen mounted men wheel their horses and begin to ride towards them.

Newton takes in the view.
"A castle...I certainly wasn't expecting this. And we're, what, maybe halfway to Kimmrid?"
When he spies the horsemen he tries to adopt a relaxed and friendly posture, but watches them carefully.
"Having survived out here against the orcs and who knows what, they may be suspicious of outsiders"

Haaki, the Feather Witch
On sight of the castle, Haaki wakes up her owl riding on the horse in front of her and whispers in its ear*, then tosses it into the air. It wings its way towards the settlement.
She lets the others she's riding with move around her, so she's deep in their midst by the time the horsemen meet up with them. Easier to cast spells from within a crowd.

Hex 236.124
The owl takes off; it will be at least ten or twenty minutes before it can circle above the castle and return to Haaki. In the meanwhile the riders approach within hailing distance. They ride dark-haired horses and are apparently unarmored, but well armed. Each has a blade buckled at their side, a crossbow slung across their back, and they carry long thrusting spears as lances. The men and women in the patrol are dark-skinned, with long hair in tight flowing ringlets. Their skin seems . . . strange. Like it is not flesh at all, but something entirely else.
One of them, a woman at the head of the formation, calls out "Ho there! Announce yourselves, travelers, and state your business in the Barony of Draea!" Her voice is harsh and metallic, echoing across the distance between the two groups.
