Gardo
"What in the realms are those things? Yeah, backing up may be a good idea." Gardo begins moving backwards to prevent being surrounded by the new foe and prepares to strike if one comes within range.

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally.

"I'm wishing I still had that magic spear right about now. If you're worried about undead, always bring a cleric...How did we forget that one...?"

Round One
The adventurers backpedal and retreat back to their companions, the shadowy figures peeling themselves away and flowing towards them like peat-blackened water flowing down a hill. The creatures, which appear to be insubsustantial in nature, stop at the opening and paw towards the adventurers, mouths gaping with what seems to be hunger.

Telemachus
The mage takes notice of the shadows and cautiously approaches.
"Well, if they can't advance beyond the borders of the town, I think we're safe to move on. We may want to do a little research on this town and figure out if there's anything inside worth fighting these shadows over."

Lec frowns. "It seems as if these creatures are confined to the village, yet the road runs straight through the settlement. It would make my employers and I more comfortable knowing that this threat was eliminated; the village looks to be ideally suited for use on the road to Kimrid. Look, many of the dwellings seem like they need just a small amount of work to fix, and the palisade is only partially destroyed!"

Gardo
"We could wait to deal with this on our way back. We could gauge our timing as we come back and Telemachus could save up another fireball which should deal with these things and we could mop up the rest. We can go around and take a look at the other gate and see what the conditions look like there and determine which side would be better for any attack."

Haaki, the Feather Witch
Haaki snorts her assenting disbelief. “Only a fool would engage some sort of shade without potent magics to hand.”

"Agreed. All I am to those things is a target...Mardan Cy! Where are you! I have another lesson for you!"
"Somebody keep an eye on our backs in case something else comes crawling out of this place."

Fourthmonth, Fourteenthday
Hex 236.128
The adventurers skirt around the palisade and examine the other side. There's a nearly identical gate on the opposite side, out of which the road continues northwards. This side looks more damaged than the southern side, however. The wood palisade is scorched and splintered; here and there the shaft of an arrow still protrudes.
Newton, Haaki, and Notai note there are what look to be at least a dozen or more bodies, nothing more than bones and rusted armor, scattered on the forest floor in front of the northern wall. The bodies look old, the remnants of a battle fought years ago.

Re: IC II
Peering in he sees what look to be several long dead corpses on the street, but not as many as one would think. The creatures reminded him of a kind of undead called a "shadow", incorporeal beings drawn from the Shadowlands, whose freezing touch makes even strong men quail.shaidar wrote:Newton wonders about the bodies and the shades
"Does anyone know what makes such creatures as we saw? Perhaps they are the souls of those that died here that need to be put to rest"
