Fourthmonth, Ninthday
Bastion

The adventurers rise early and collect the mercenaries from the Grange before heading back onto the road. The mercenaries look at the adventurers, especially Gardo, with renewed respect. "Demonbane!" they cheer as Gardo enters, "they say you personally lopped off the head the Nightstalker. That's pretty badass!"

The road north follows the pass through the mountains. Ever so often a side-road leads off to the east or west, deeper into the mountains. There are plenty of travelers on the road; merchants, freeholders, guards. At each sideroad the adventurers spy stout round buildings of stone, flying the cerise flag of the Baroness Arcaphia; garrisons of troops to guard the roads. As evening approaches the pass exits the mountains and the companions find there is a large inn at the mouth of the pass: The Shards' Keep, it is called. A stone wall tipped with wood palisade surrounds the building, containing stables, a smithy, and what looks to be a basic general store. A score of wagons are in the yard, accompanied by men-at-arms huddled around campfires.

The party is told the mercenaries are willing to camp in the yard, while they can stay in the inn proper. The interior is wide open and clean; it looks as if it is peopled largely by merchants and travelers.

Gardo

Gardo smiles at the recognition from the mercs as they head to the north. Upon reaching the inn, he makes a decision. "Men, tonight I shall stay with the mercs and spend time with them. Maybe help keep their morale up. Also, since one of my henchmen prefers to stay outside, I feel it fitting to do likewise at times. Wulfka, if you wish to join, do so but the comfort of a good bed will soon be gone." Gardo will then spend time drinking and talking with the men, making sure to note and expand Notai's and Wulfka's part in the slaying of the NightStalker.
It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally.

Feargus nods at Gardo’s humility but he has other plans. He heads inside with the plan to perform his rhythm speak late into the night, singing songs both old and new for the gathered travelers.

Feargus spends the night performing. At first no one seems to pay him much mind -- the tables are each in their own little bubbles -- but slowly a hush falls over the room as Feargus continues. He sings of the exploits of his companions: the slaying of the Nightstalker, the deaths of Nald and Goshawk, the fight against the giant turtle, the rout of the brigands. He sings the old songs as well, those heard throughout the Scarlet Principality: the hard first Nadir of the the Thirteenth Cycle, when Rhea's Ford was but a village, and the first Scarlet Prince held off a warhorde of orcs and goblins almost single-handedly, the Ride to Kesig, an almost mythical land to the south and the Knights who rode off in search of the way there, only to die, one by one, along the way, and the Fall of Zizdul, once the shining city at the edge of the Silver Sea, at the Mouth of the Sarn, slowly collapsing over centuries of decadence and now home to all manner of Chaos-born creatures.

When Feargus stops singing, his throat raw and dry, the hush continues for what seems to be minutes, followed by a roar of applause. Drinks are offered to him and his companions; he is offered employment in this inn and several others, scattered throughout the land. A rosy-faced lad rushes up to him, shyness and excitement fighting a visible battle across his face. "That was amazing!" he says. Feargus notes that he is clutching a zither in one hand, "truly amazing! I've never heard the like before!" His face flushes even redder and he works his toe into the ground. "My name's Mardan Cy," he continues, in a rush, "wouldyoubeinterestedinhavinganapprentice? I'm cleaning the stables now, but my ma taught me how to wield a blade, and I could care for your mount, fix your meals, clean your armor . . ."

Feargus is also approached by a woman in robes of red and brown, her hair tied up in a bun, with prim gold and silver earrings winking at him. "I don't know what you are currently engaged in," she says, "but if half of those songs are true the organization I work with might be interested in . . . working with you. Name's Cynza Dalin. I'm a representative of the Northern Mercantile Exchange, based in Alice. We're focused on exploring and developing new sources of revenue streams from the areas to the north of the Principality, and I'm always interested in meeting people that can help facilitate that."

Newton enjoys the warmth and food of the inn, himself surprised at the performance put on by Feargus.

He will try and pick up news of the road ahead from those heading south.

The vast majority of the patrons are either local freeholders or merchants traveling south from Alice, the destination of the adventurers. Alice itself is only about fifteen miles to the north. Newton learns the land north of the Ironshards, including Alice, is controlled by the Cardinal Baron, who's keep is located in Alice. The roads and surrounding lands are peaceful, although there is some grumbling about high taxes. He can't quite get the sense if it is typical mercantile chafing at anything that reduces their profit, or if the taxes are genuinely an issue.

Feargus looks at the lad. "Life on the road is hard. Did you hear what happened to my man Goshawk in that story? He lies recovering from his grievous wounds even now. He also won't quite be the same, though he will recover. Our lot isn't here to fix what ails the land, only to push back the darkness before the next fall. Yes, there is adventure and glory and money, but there is also blood and sweat, death and things that will tear your throat out." At this he lowers his shirt from his neck, exposing his upper chest. The marks from the nightstalker are healed but he goes into a exceedingly detailed description of the attack and the pain and the anguish at seeing Goshawk's prostrate form. His eyes are red when he finishes.

"If hearing this you will still join us, I will take you as my squire. At first, you will not fight. You will learn to work and to appreciate your companions. The glory will never be yours. This we share together. Sleep on it and meet me at dawn." Noting the boy's instrument he says, "You play that thing, boy?"

Feargus looks at the woman. The weight of the day and the performance is beginning to have its effect. "We are currently engaged. It seems these lands have no shortage of opportunity. After we leave here, we indeed are heading toward Alice. I do not speak for us as a group but we do not often turn down opportunity. Can you provide us with a written introduction to your organization?"

Mardan Cy

The speech seems only to invigorate the lad. "I'm not scared," he says, "my ma always told me the life of Man is nasty, brutish, and short." He strums the zither seemingly without thinking. "Aye, I play a bit. Not like you just did, but well enough.*"
*in other words, if he ceases to be a squire he could advance as a bard.

Cynza Dalin

She nods curtly. "I will do just that and have it for you in the morning. Our office is just off the North Road, behind Twill's Tavern. Ask for Matts and give him the letter."

Feargus leans over to Telemachus and says, "What kind of a place is this? They keep birds in the rafters?" He then heads out and grabs a few things, assuming his new squire will be joining the group in the morning.
Just trying to find a place for standard traveling gear, a horse, a dagger and a light crossbow. Otherwise I'm ready to move forward.

Telemachus

"There's something rather strange about that bird. It's vaguely familiar... No matter, as long as it doesn't morph into a blood sucking demon, I'm content to let it be."
Telemachus is ready to continue to Alice.

He's not able to find everything on his list; the Shard is still largely an inn, albeit a large and relatively self-sufficient one. In ten years there will likely be a small village sprouting up around it like mushrooms after a range, but for the time being all he can find is a dagger, a backpack, 50' of rope, and a half dozen torches. Feargus is advised that the horse, and crossbow, and more expensive items will have to be purchased in Alice, which is only a half-day's ride to the north.

Fourthmonth, Tenthday
The Road to Alice

Coming out of the Ironshards the adventurers enter thick forest; it makes the woods surrounding Junction look to be sparse woodlands. However, like much of the land within the Principality, it bears signs of habitation. Freeholds and farms dot the roads, and as often as not the trees have been cleared back from the road a quarter-mile or so to make way for fields just starting to show the green of newly planted crops, or left to fallow for the season. Several of the traders mentioned the previous night to "watch out for pigs", and before long the adventurers see why; they catch glimpses of several sounders of semi-feral swine, rooting through the leaf mold on the forest floor for fallen acorns. This part of the Principalities is apparently known for it succulent pork, fed on nuts and allowed to roam through the woods at will.

The adventurers have traveled for about two hours, and judge themselves to be another four from Alice, when a figure emerges from the trees that have encroached back up to the road . . .

Haaki, the Feather Witch

The woman wears a patchwork cloak of feathers, drawn from dozens of types of birds. The bleached skull of some large seabird sits upon her head, the skeleton of its beak extending down along her nose. Her hair is waist-length and worn down, parts loose, parts braided. It's mostly black but it has streaks of white. Her skin is well-tanned, and was originally more brown-skinned than white-skinned, even before the sun coated it. One of her eyes is hazel, the other sky blue.

Three dogs stand next to her, two of them to six feet on either side and a much tougher looking one six feet in front of her. The leather armor on them fits them well, and they have the general stature of trained war dogs, though their fur is shaggy and grown out, sticking out in wild tufts around their straps and coverings. All three of the dogs sit at attention, prepared to lurch into action but currently occupying a non-aggressive stance.

As the party comes within speaking distance, she points the large, gnarled wooden staff in her hands at Feargus. "You are Fear Gus," she declares. "And you are Guardo, the slayer of night creatures. And you must be the one named Newton." She points the staff at each of you in turn.

She doesn't point the staff at Telemachus, but her eyes narrow as she takes him in. She regards the rest of the entourage, but doesn't address them.

"I am Haaki. They call me the Feather Witch. You travel to Alice. I will help you there."

On hearing the woman introduce herself as a witch, Ribar frowns and he mutters something under his breath while he watching the dogs suspiciously.
