Right now you are more or less in the bottom tip of Lion territory, just south of Matsu Castle, and heading north along the river will take you directly to the bridge leading to Beiden Pass. Humility's Lesson is the fortress north of Matsu Castle, as seen here:

With the aid of the Daidoji scouts, you cut your way to Three-Sides River. With his knowledge of the land, Senichi explains how the river is named because it provides the heart of trade and commerce for the three most affluent clans in the Empire: the Scorpion, the Lion, and the Crane. "Now that we have reached the river, our garb will not seem quite so conspicuous," says one of the scouts hopefully.

Moving upriver, you pass boats, travellers and the occasional hamlet, none of whom seem to give you much attention except to bow and let you pass if they are peasants. You get the impression that many of these peasants would not know you from the nobles of their own clan—they probably only recognize the emblems of their direct lord, and everyone else are just "other samurai" to them.

The whole time, the Spine of the World Mountains loom large overhead across the river.

By evening you make it to the way station at the foot of Beiden Pass. This way station is a village unto itself, with several inns and two mighty garrisons, one of Imperial magistrates (to make sure the pass stays neutral) and one of local Lion Clan samurai (to make sure the Imperials don't overstep themselves). The Pass has been a hotly contested territory since the dawn of the Empire, and the necessity of its neutrality is well known. No chances are being taken here; if someone wanted to invade the Pass, it would require a mighty army or a very corrupt magistrate running the waystation.

"Here is where we leave you. Thanks again for your help. We will praise your name to our lord at Daidoji Castle. Please come see us again." The scouts duck back into the countryside, taking a wide berth around the waystation and moving on.

Because of its neutrality, there is no hospitality here for samurai below a certain Glory threshold. You will have to pay for your own room and board:

(remember: 1 gold koku = 5 silver bu = 50 copper zeni)

The Imperial guard house itself is almost a tiny castle estate, with guest cottages available for 1 silver bu per night, plus 5 copper zeni to stable horses (those prices will cover everyone). You will be living in luxury, under full Imperial protection, and dining with the highest ranking samurai who happen to be in town.

Mistress Oshi's inn is medium grade, 5 copper zeni a night for a suite, and 2 zeni to stable the horses. You won't dine with anyone important, and you won't be afforded full protection, but it's a nice place and quiet. Most samurai and rich merchants will stay here.

Master Hashimoto's inn is the common place, 3 copper zeni a night to cover your beds and stabling. This station is the bottleneck through the Pass, which is practically the only way to move between the North & South halves of the Empire, so its crowded and rowdy.

There is no monastery, but the local shinto shrine is willing to house other religious in exchange for a full day's work around the place. So, if you stayed one night, you would actually stay 2 nights and spend 1 day working; staying 2 nights would turn into 4 nights, with 2 days of volunteer work.

Where are we at on our time frame? Senichi would be glad to pay for Imperial accomodations (that will definitely avoid Lion troubles...), he would also pay for Kenta rather than delay our travel.

Senichi pays for stately rooms on the Imperial estate. As it turns out, the most prestigious person staying with you is a Rank 3 Crane neither of you recognize. There aren't any Lion staying, so Senichi is fine there. No other encounters to speak of.

It's currently evening on the 2nd of Falling Month, and you have until the 15th. With only minor interruptions it shouldn't take you more than 2-3 days of travel to reach your destination, so you're well within your time frame.




I've been swamped with work and family responsibilities right now, so stints at my gaming desk have been few and far between. Your next significant encounter will be on the way up the snowy slopes of Beiden Pass, but I doubt I'll be able to get to it until next Wednesday, since every day until then is full up.

I believe I haven't missed a death day, but thanks for reminding me again, I might have missed this one coming up. The two groups should eventually reunite by the time you reach your end destination, but I'll leave it to the players to decide whether to push for meeting up before then.

Sorry again for another late post, it looks like Wednesday wasn't going to work after all and now I won't be able to sit down with my notes again until this next Wednesday.

Senichi pays the fee of 1 silver, 5 copper and you all relish the chance to spend the night on soft bedding again. Dinner is pleasant and quiet, and the earlier events of the day seem like another lifetime. Everyone regains 1 Void Point for a peaceful rest.

Long Month, 3rd (Evening Day, High Week)

The traffic on the road up Beiden Pass is fairly sparse, because of the time of year. The only travelers you really see are the occasional peasant hauling a cart of rice up the mountain or trade goods down the mountain, and vacationers on their way to or from a meditative sojourn in the rugged countryside.

Within hours you already reach the snow line. The road is kept mostly clear of snow, but periodically you get a good view way up the pass and can tell that the farther up you go, the more wild and snow-covered the path becomes.

The winds of the Pass begin to pick up, biting your faces with chill air as you walk.

Not long after you pass another peasant merchant heading down with baskets full of one thing or another, you spot footprints staggering through the snow, out of the woods to the left and up the road. In the distance, maybe 100 yards ahead, you see an emaciated man clothed in rags stumbling through the snow.

Senichi will look around while Kenta renders aid, if it's something Senichi can help with, they will trade off.

The man is clearly an eta, the "unclean" caste, so low in the social order that they are forbidden from even touching non-eta.

He is on the elder side of life, dressed in tattered rags and he smells foul. His incoherent mutterings keep slipping into completely unintelligible grunts and noises.

He makes no notice of you as you follow him along—he just keeps stumbling through the snow, glassy eyed and bewildered.

Senichi sees no other disturbances around them but tufts of snow being lifted up by the growing wind.

Oops, I guess I read this and didn't respond...

Culturally would Senichi even care about someone like this? As a player I'm certainly intrigued... For the now, we can at least follow.

From the way it's written in the rulebook, I think Senichi would be allowed more leeway than samurai other clans. There's zero reason for him to care, and every reason to avoid contact (after all, the eta's presence can physically corrupt his purity), but at the same time the Unicorn Clan is designed to allow players the opportunity to do what they like and chalk it up to the fact that the Unicorn are stereotyped as being unorthodox.

Kenta moves to help the wretched man while Senichi hangs back with Saburo, following at the respectable distance.

He continues to stumble forward and mutter, pushing Kenta away. Suddenly he lets out an anguished cry and brandishes a dagger, shouting at you not to come near—at least, that's what you piece together between the rest of his meaningless rambling. "Flee, or die!" he keeps repeating at intervals, backing up the hillside with dagger pointed at you, occasionally losing track of where he is and wandering on before turning to ward you off again.

Along the exposed flesh of his arm you both see a plethora of poorly healed scars festering on cracked and decayed skin, all carved in the shape of terrible forbidden symbols.
