Issachar speaks.

"Cousins. We live in dangerous times for all our brethren. Ancient evils arise with demons and dead walking our lands. We should combine against common foe and agree trade between our races.

We have heard the forges beneath the mountain are wondrous places. But even your tribes suffer from unearthed evils that haunt the mountain roots. Is that not so?"

"Friend of man, of dwarf, of orc... Friend of giants, too? When you claim everyone is your friend, it means you just don't know who your enemies are." The orcish leader smiles, a menacing grimace with his manifold pointed teeth.

You continue your small talk and banter. It is clear this is a military foray, but not one to make decisions for the tribes. These orcs are from the Black Tongue Tribe, under chief-priest Balagos. They reveal that there is a ruin of interest to them several miles due west and deeper into the forest, but it is beset by scores of monkeys and will require some strategy to conquer. The orcish soldiers relish this challenge. They don't desire your aid in this task, as that would decrease their enjoyment and glory.

"Go due north, find the headwaters of the river. That will lead you to the three tribes. They will find your entreaties amusing. Perhaps you find success, perhaps you do not. But you can find the audience with the Wise Ones which you seek," he provides as advice, seeming both bemused that you drag a wagon through the forest and also hungry to possess a wagon-full of whatever treasures you're bringing. "We fear no darkness below the mountain; the mountain roots will bleed for our clans. Our annoyance comes from above. The mountain peak has stone giants and wyverns who pester us. Eliminate them and the orcs will be more grateful."

Expediting to help this forward. They're cautious, not friendly, so you cannot recruit them. You'd need to impress them with gifts or deeds sufficient to get to Friendly before you could attempt that. Otherwise, I moved forward with your successful conversation here, giving you all the results above at once. If you have anything else specific to try, do so, otherwise we can then move on.

'Blackjack' Amistad

converses as he is able with the orc speaking common. Not happy a military group intrude but it is not unexpected. Best to leave them to their foray before they think we are a suitable challenge. We will take their advice but once out of earshot I will ask Bera to scout an alternative route to the river so that we could swerve any ambushes.

Piers is disappointed that these aren't the orcs they are looking for, but happy to have at least learned something about both groups.

"That's a wise plan Amistad," he says. "Let's move along before they change their minds".

You make as much distance from the orcs as you can, deviating northeast to change your route in case they try to lay ambush instead of tracking you. The nights are getting colder, dropping closer to freezing each night. A cold wet rain assails you ,dropping in heavy droplets through the canopy above on the day after you meet the orcs. To your dismay, the wagon founders and a wheel breaks. You set a camp and spend a day mending the wagon, grateful to have brought along your young cartwright aide. That night, a ruddy glow reflects on the night sky to the west long after the sun has set - some kind of large fire burns back beyond where you left the orcs, over the horizon.

On the third day after meeting the orcs you are moving again, daily rain now a reality, and an axle breaks on the muddy, root-filled ground. Another day fixing it, then you're back underway. You find the river, running southeast and forming the forest's edge, tundra-like plains of flowering gorse on the other side. You spend the last afternoon following the west side of the river northwest through the overgrown woods until, dusk lowering in the sky. You emerge on the gorse-covered plains at a logging site where many trees have been felled, a trail winding off to the northeast towards the mountain. It took far longer than you expected, but at the end of the eighth day, you are free of the ancient forest, with horses and wagon still intact.

The dark, solitary mountain looms over you to the north, rising above the thick rain clouds which now splatter you freely with a light drizzle. The river winds from the northeast, the beaten trail parallel with it, to the nearest portion of the mountain - the west edge of the southern-most jut of the mountainside, about 16 miles away. Straight north, the flat face of the mountain's westernmost expanse is closer to 24 miles away. The mountain stretches some 16 miles westward from that point, then curving northward. On that westernmost face, a glint like a diamond flashes in the light of the setting sun, far enough up the slope to be seen at this distance.

Brother Issachar

seems I lost a post? Okay, I was going to ask about this chief priest Balagos but that can wait.

The mountains seem interesting even from this distance. The glint? It doesn't feel like it is snow or ice reflecting, could it be glass? Issachar tries to remember rumours around Gaul of glass towers, crystal domes and pinnacles? Perhaps this is different to all of them.

I could imagine that orc tribes will live in the lea of the mountain and would go that way directly north, though the river trail winds along the river and it makes sense not to break any more wheels and delay our time. If their are three tribes and they are spread out maybe one lives in those lands and I think by geography probably the ones most directly north of Amistad town. So Issachar would be able to go that way if put to a choice but is open to follow the leaders.

Amistad

yes it took longer than expected but if the wagon can cope with better terrain I would suggest we push on. Briefly investigate the logging site to understand what kind of tress they are felling. Amistad's brain works in logs per tree and therefore how much building material can be planed and seasoned into planks. Enough for a few huts or a fortified stockade?

My understanding of the description is that we have followed a trail to a bend in the river (following trail NW to logging site where it now flows from the NE). If that is correct it means we don't have to cross the river at this point, we can follow the trail along the riverbank. What we lack is an understanding of the three tribes and which may be best to first make alliances with.

Amistad with confer with Sir Piers, Issachar and Sgt Danzeiger and if no objections arise, continue to follow the river trail NE.

"Following the river seems as good a plan as any", opines Piers. "We'll undoubtedly encounter orcs at some point. The river will serve to guard our flank from an ambush".

Amistad examines the logging sites of the orcs. It is clear they're stripping the forest, leaving only stumps, with no intent to be selective or reforest behind. Everything is taken, implying it is likely for fuel more than finished wood production. A great amount of fuel. There is evidence that some care is taken for some of the logs and you sawdust showing they did plane some to boards here on-site - but Berra's careful examination tells you that those are morlock tracks there, rather than orcs, doing the quality work. After examining the site, you camp, preparing to set off in the morning.

With a road over the plains, you make excellent time, the wagon rolling easily. It is now the laden knights and horses who set the pace. You make the sixteen miles ot the foot of the mountain, arriving by mid-afternoon. Your right flank is protected by the river, your cadre of armored knights fans out to guard the left. You are unaccosted.

You pause when you see a square wood-and-stone tower rising before you, a watchtower atop a hill overlooking the river. The river flows over a 20' waterfall from the hillside plateau, crashing down here at the river's head. The road swings around and up the hillside opposite the river, guarded by the tower. Smoke rising from the square edifice lets you know someone is home...

Brother Issachar

"Well this is it, we make a journey on the 'road less travelled'. I hope our sojourn continues and not comes to an abrupt end!" says the cleric of Gwanwen.

We would have been spotted from miles off and likely forewarned is forearmed. He buckles on his armour beneath his clerical garb and advises young Trick to load his crossbow but hide it discreetly out of the way. He follows the directions of Amistad and Sir Piers. Do we go all together or as a smaller group first?

Amistad

gulps a bit after thinking about the enormity of his task and actually being quite a small group even though we are armed well. He travels up the road to within hailing distance of the watchtower, checking for the gates or barricades. If they are closed we need to ask them to open, if they are open I think we should ride through but very wary of any ambush.

Thoughts or alternative plans?

Sir Piers

"I think if a few of us approach it on horseback, that will allow us to converse with those within and we can escape out of range quickly if they turn out to be hostile. A small number of us should be less frightening to them too."

Piers turns in his saddle to indicate the wagon and the troopers. "The sergeant and and his can men find a spot where the wagon can be defended easily while we're gone."

"Perhaps one other rider can come with us to act as a galloper and communicate messages between ourselves and the wagon if needed".

Troopers Tubby and Cooper ride forward with Amistad, Sir Piers , Issachar and Akaara leaving the others a few hundred meters behind by the rivers edge. They stake out their horses to water and feed but remain vigilant to mount to ride to or rescue or pass beyond the watchtower.

Amistad will look for any flags or signals flying from the watchtower which might indicate which of the three orc tribe he is dealing with.

Brother Issachar

Just hopes the smell coming from the fire is some spit roasted deer not a humanoid. "Meat is back on the menu..." comes to mind.

A watchtower. Maybe just has a few guards and a campfire and stables for messenger riders. The priest is aware that our foray to secure 'peace and trade' may have to be enforced. He heads the group and hails the guards that he sees in the tower or camp.

Troopers Tubby and Cooper ride forward with Amistad, Sir Piers , Issachar and Akaara leaving the others a few hundred meters behind by the rivers edge.

The loud splashing of the waterfall increases as you approach; a massive amount of water pouring down from above into the wide pool to begin the river. The pool at the headwaters is twice as wide as the river that flows southward and offers a place with less currents. Amistad notes the gentle slope of a disembarking area, drag marks from logs and sledges pulled from the water and onto the wide, hard road which continues up and around to the plateau above. The quality of the road is obvious and greatly increased here, it is smooth, hard, and wide enough for two wagons to pass.

It is a sheer cliff face 20' high to the lowest ebb of the plateau above. As you grow closer, you see the sharpened pickets of a perimeter line at the cliff's edge and back out of sight. The watchtower is wider and taller than you surmised - you guess 50' square and high - and you see other smoke plumes, indicating more buildings behind it on the hill.

A keening roar goes up from the top of the tower as you approach the curve where the road begins to ascend. You look up and see the long serpentine neck of a black dragon atop the tower. It flaps its wings and throws itself into the air, coming off the top of the tower erratically. It flaps hard but the staccato motion of its broken and rehealed wings is awkward as it rushes towards you. There is a metallic clank as it hits the end of it's heavy iron chain, stopping it short at the edge of the cliff above. It roars again at you in pain and rage.

You are cautious, but eventually pass around with enough berth to ascend the road up the slope. The serpent hisses and squats at the end of its chain, monitoring you the whole way.

At the top of the hill is a 10-foot palisade with a wooden gate. Flags wave stop it, showing a tongue torn out by its root, blackened by rot. A pair of chainmail clad orcs stand above the wall, watching your approach dubiously.

Brother Issachar

"Hail watchmen. I am Issachar of the Envoys of Gaul. This is Sir Piers, Ambassador of the Duke of Gaul and Amistad, a noble merchant and trader. We seek an audience with the Wise Ones and the Chief Priest Balagos. We bring a Treaty of Alliance and Peace. Will you open your gates and let the Chiefs receive us?" says the orc speaking priest.

Of the three orcish tribes, what were their names? Sorry can't remember, was the Black Tongue group one of them?

Issachar strategizes: The dragon, set loose upon us or the gathered men would wreak havoc and could easily TPK the mission. So we have to tread carefully in the knowledge we are out manned and outgunned. We know the armours and weapons of the Orcs are superior in crafting yet they have failed to dislodge the giants and wyverns from the mountain tops, even with a pet dragon. Maybe in some way we could use Amistad being on friendly terms with the Cyclops as a way to gain influence with the giants above. Anyone speak giantish? They can also cut all the lumber they need and presumably hunt enough meat to keep them fed. So being able to solve long standing problems they have (with the giants?) could be one of the few tactics towards achieving peace and not losing our heads.

"I've certainly no wish to get any closer to that dragon", agrees Piers. "However, what do you think if the fact that it is chained up? It serves the orcs unwillingly perhaps, and might just fly away if given the opportunity?"

"The broken wings are a clue perhaps. Is it held here by mistreatment?"

Otherwise, Sir Piers agrees with Issachar's assessment and awaits the orc's response.

Amistad

"The dragon is a certain danger and unleashed would be a terrible foe. Still we have among us those who wear dragon scale and should fear not!" Amistad tries to sound confident but is definitely nervous of the dragon and orc war band. It might be worth investigating, especially if we get short shrift from the orc welcoming party and I would expect and rebuttal of us would be quickly followed up with an attack on the wagon and men by the river.

"Hail orcs of the Black Tongues. We come in peace and fealty en route to an audience with your Wise Ones." he says as he draws alongside Issachar.

Akaara gets a nod from Amistad and delay at the rear of the small party to enable her to check out the watch tower, noting entrances and guards but staying away from the dragons reach. How strong are the chain links, forged in iron, rusty, the dragons' wing has been dressed or left to heal by itself. She will chitter to it in Morlockian telling the beast it is a great beauty and undeserving of chains.
