Aldus feels quite excited to have marched the sopping leader of the bandits back to the rest of the party.

Listening to Casfrea's invective, Aldus nudges Telemachus. "If she doesn't end up on the tragic end of a noose, you might offer her a job. She's tough, and obviously out of prospects."

To the party: "Shall we march our catch back to town?"

Newton seems disappointed at the amount of loot the bandits have collected.

"Let me try something before we leave."

He makes sure he is out of sight of the bandits before retrieving a potion (ESP) from his backpack. He chuggs it down and heads over to the bandit chief..."So the pittance we found is all of your loot? There must be more for you to have attracted so many followers. Tell me where it is and perhaps we can come to some arrangement if there is enough to make it worth my while"

The Boss

"This is all we got; if we were rich would we be trying to rob the ore shipment?"

Newton picks the following thoughts from his head, however: Gajo's kept all of the good stuff for himself and his cronies back at the hideout, or else I'd be rich like them, too!

Newton shakes his head

"Really? That's a shame. It was a clever idea to go after the ore. As their leader I'm pretty confident you'll end up dancing at the end of a noose" he raises an eyebrow "all that effort wasted"

The Boss

"Probably," he says, "but that's the breaks. If I don't die on the gallows I'd likely enough be eaten by a grue in the wilderness."

He seems pretty resigned to his fate, at this point, although Aldus does pick up disdain for this Gajo fellow.

Telemachus

The mage orders the lieutenants to have their squads collect the dead archers and footmen and put them on the horses for return to Junction.

He also orders them to securely restrain the Boss, his bodyguard, and Casfrea.

Once Newton is done interrogating the Boss, he gives the order to move out for Junction. Bandits marching single file, footmen ahead and behind, horse on the flanks. They move clear of the river so no one gets the bright idea of making a run and swimming for it.

Newton draws in close to the chief, dropping his voice low so nobody else will hear...

"Gajo will be happy to hear you didn't rat him out. Now direct me to the hideout and I'll make sure he understands your loyalty and we'll get you out of this mess"

At these words the Boss looks positively frightened, and he forks his fingers towards Newton to ward off the evil eye. "You're some kind of a witch!" he gasps, looking wide-eyed at the scout.

Newton picks up the following throughts: Better off dead in a hangman's noose than going back to the punishment Gajo would mete out! and an image flashes into his mind; a valley of gentle, rolling grass-covered hills, surrounded on four sides by mountains. Built into a steep mountain face at the far end of the valley is what looks to be a formidable redoubt of stone, seemingly carved from the rock itself.

Newton laughs at the accusation of being a witch, then his face turns serious again

"Tell me about Gajo and his fortress and I'll see if we can get your sentence reduced to life, as a reward for your cooperation. It's not like Gajo cares what happens to you as he sits on his treasure, treasure you worked hard to steal for him. Also, the woman and her band we released up on the hill, is she likely to run to Gajo so he sends you some help?"

The Boss

"You're talking about Tinehildi? She the one that ratted us out, and you let her go? That scheming, tricksy woman! I don't know what she'll do, to be honest; that woman lies like a fish drinks water." He sighs. "What is it you want to know about Gajo? He's a tough bastard, rules his domain with an iron fist."

Newton waves the others over

"Firstly, where is his fortress located? What defenses does it have? Tell me about his skills and those of his lieutenants? Are you aware of any men he has placed in the Baron's ranks or the magistrate?

The Boss

The bandit captain's face goes blank. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to see a gesture of good will on your part before I answer any of your questions," he says, although an image of a dark, heavily scarred man in chain and a reddish cape floats into his mind, flanked by two women that look identical. To the side of one is a short man with long grey hair, and to the side of the other is an enormously tall, and enormously fat, bear of a man.

Newton

"What sort of gesture are you looking for? Although, I would point out if Gajo has infiltrated the guards, or the magistrates men then unless you tell us and we stop them you'll be dead before you get anywhere near the magistrate"

Gardo

"What, he's not the boss? There is someone else above him? This is getting more complicated. Good will? Maybe we let the Baron get the information out of him. Don't think the baron minds 'convincing' people to cooperate."

The Boss

The bandit shakes his head. "I'm probably safer in irons in Junction than anywhere else. I don't even know if any of the others have come this far east. We mostly focus on targets this side of the river, Rocky Peak, Hob, Dry Gulch sometimes, although the Red Feet pretty much control that town. That being said, I don't know for sure. Gajo doesn't tell us everything. He's a believer in partmentalsnations."

Newton sees truth in the man's mind.

Aldus listens intently from a discreet distance, not wanting to interfere with whatever tact Newton has that is producing such ready results, but drinking in every detail.

"That is some comfort to know, and I do think you are being honest with us. My friend is correct, the Baron will not be so gentle in obtaining this kind of information. What gesture are you looking for?"

Gardo

"Wait. This far east?" Gardo looks to the east then west trying to see things. After a moment, he stops. "So, where were you going to go when you stole all that gold? How far is this place that..... Ga..something or another, is waiting for you to return with the gold?"
