08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
So... The trogs stopped just outside melee range. Does that mean this is a melee round or a ranged round, Dave?

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Spotting one trog falling behind the rest of the scaly beasts, Gwillt singles him out with a well-placed sheaf arrow.
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19
Damage, Sheaf Arrow [1d8] = 1
Unsure if that will do the job, he fires another before he knows if the first one even hits...
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+4] = 9+4 = 13
Damage, Sheaf Arrow [1d8] = 2

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Sorry, should have made this more clear. Really, the buggers were simply trying to avoid ending up in point blank range... and they were not sure how/where the group was going to position themselves. So, to answer your question... it kind of depends on movement rates, current positioning and order of action.Alethan wrote:So... The trogs stopped just outside melee range. If history is any indication, the bad guys will act first and, if they choose to engage, that will obviously bring them into range for most players, so, feel free to enter conditional actions (e.g. if able, so-and-so will use their melee weapon, else they will use their ranged weapon) and I will adjudicate logically based on the situation for your character when it's their turn to act.
As things stand, Strom, Ewell and Grimnail can engage in melee without question. Kaltar, with his slow speed, would need to move closer and engage in round two, or formally 'charge' in order to reach in this first round. Garth and Epsilon suspect they can probably reach. Gwilt and Shannigans are probably too far away, as is Alordan... but, again, if the beasts act first and engage, that will obviously change things.
Some of you have already posted actions. Feel free to modify them accordingly, or add an additional action (e.g. if the above isn't possible... ).
Again, sorry for the lack of clarity.

When I said it's on, apparently I meant it...
Ewell feeling much better this battle, goes after the leaderest looking one around with renewed energy...

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
With an evil sounding snarl, yet with less conviction as previously, Grim shouts a curse as he closes to melee.
"Uko o'o nhago 'u hahh!"
Tho weakened he wields his axes with deadly precision as the first stokes fall.
Grims Dual Hand Ax#1 [1d20+4] = 2+4 = 6 Damage[1d8] = 1 Hand Ax#2 [1d20+4] = 7+4 = 11 Damage[1d8] = 2 (finess attacks, no STR dmg)
For all his grace, Grims strength is just too sapped to cut through the tough lizard scales to much effect.

Ah, got it. So then no ranged attack from Gwillt. Instead, he shoulders his bow and attacks with his scimitar.
Same attack roll, then, if you don't mind...
To Hit, Shortbow [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19
New damage for scimitar...
Damage, Scimitar [1d8+3] = 7+3 = 10
Assuming most of the others will boldly charge forward, he'll circle around and go after the one he hit earlier.

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Realizing that his armor and training gives him better protection than most, Strom moves forward to engage in spite of the weakness in his limbs.
He launches an attack on the nearest foe:
[1d20] = 16
Dmg:
[1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8

Dave I dropped my pack at the inn so shouldn't be any speed issues I would hope!
Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
nice---I see three high damage strikes in the first round. (8, 10 and 12) I dont think we had that until the 5th round earlier.

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
I forgot that fact. While most of the weight carried is in your armor and weapon, having dropped that extra weight will help your chances. I do see you've made your attack rolls, and I will apply them this round (or next) as needed.saalaria wrote:Dave I dropped my pack at the inn so shouldn't be any speed issues I would hope!

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Still waiting on Garth and Alordan.
Just an FYI... I have a busy final morning at work, and scheduled lunch plans, but I do expect to have some free time today. We'll see.

Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
sorry for delay - been on a plane all day.
Alordan, with his beloved bow, fires two more shots into the troupe of trogs:
Bow Attack - [1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5 (THAC0 = 20)
S...I...G....H...
2nd roll on the critical miss: Bow Attack - [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22 (THAC0 = 20)
2nd attack roll if I can still make one:
Bow Attack - [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7 (THAC0 = 20)
Bow (Normal) - Damage [1d6] = 4
wow - just stellar shooting on Alordan's part

Garth follows the group moving into melee, stopping to cast before combat is engaged.
Tossing a bit of sand into the air he complete his spell.
Sleep - just before combat.

Round 1
Alordan and Shannigans take a risk, firing at the charging group of troglodytes while their own group mates rush to engage, but both are able to successfully avoid inflicting any friendly damage. Alordan's aim is clearly thrown off as he sees his new friends rushing into his line of sight and both shots sail far as a result. Shannigans continues is impressive aim, sinking a perfectly-placed arrow (+20xp) into the chest of the leading lizard beast (l2).
With his newfound strength, and the impending threat, Epsilon rushes back to retrieve and don his armor (it will take you two rounds).
Note: A new house rule on the subject of donning and removing armor has been added: Getting Into and Out of Armor.
Ewell and Grimnail are the first to reach the invading group. Ewell lashes out the leading troglodyte (l2), struck by an arrow from Shannigans moments earlier, his longsword slashing with deadly accuracy, dropping it. Grimnail, now brandishing a pair of hand axes, isn't able to match the same level of skill with these weapons that he demonstrated with his black-blades scimitar; that, or the beast he's engaged with (a11) was just lucky to avoid the double slash attempts. Flying in from behind the action, Gwilt runs wide and comes to engage with the previously wounded troglodyte (a12) that was lagging behind. With one skillful slash with his scimitar he puts this trailing swamp beast out of its misery. From the opposite side of Gwilt, Strom and Kaltar enter the action. Strom arrives first, felling his adversary (a13) with a deadly hack. Kaltar, arrives moments later and rivals the success of his fellow holy friend, dropping his target (a14) with a momentum-aided bash of his mace (and increasingly fondness for combat).
The lone remaining troglodyte, before it realizes the fate of its companions behind it, lashes out at Grimnail, whom moments earlier meant to do bad things to it. Grimnail escapes unharmed after two claws and one bite attempt.
Garth follows the group moving into melee, stopping to cast Sleep, quickly reconsiders his action once he sees the early success his friends had, coupled with the fact that his casting would most likely also affect members of his group by the time he was in a position to cast.

Oops.
Not sure if we should try and keep it alive or let it go to follow it or...
If killing it, my attack roll isn't going to do it...
To Hit, Scimitar [1d20+4] = 4+4 = 8

yes I think let him go
Kaltar withdraws from combat, without leaving an opening for the trog, intending to go and grab his pack, ready for the pursuit

Shanigans will police the area back by the Dragon for other signs of movement until the group returns.
Re: 08. Another Wave... of Nausea
Ewell must not have heard the question if it was raised. Still upset with his weakened battle results from last engagement, lashes out against the remaining trog, hoping to avenge the locals' deaths and impress the lass.

and apparenty does it quite well.
sorry, but i think we need to gather the locals for defense before we track this one back to their camp. And I figured I would either miss or do lower damage due to luck...
Besides, they brought fewer trogs this time. Maybe they are running out?
