Populated Hexes Patreon

#1 Post by thirdkingdom »

I've finally launched my Patreon, here. I'm going to be providing a series of 6-mile hexes, each comprising approximately 32 square miles, filled with monster lairs, dungeons, and excitement! They're basically small mini-settings that can be plopped down in any sandbox or hexcrawl style game.

I have to admit dude, these are really, really cool. Unfortunately I don't have a job, but once I do I'll definitely look more seriously into your patreon.

I like the scaling. I've been doing done something vaguely similar in my B/X game and have come to rely pretty heavily on having different scales of nested hexes. We use 24-mile 'world' hexes (which we never really use), which are subdivided down into 6-mile 'campaign scale' hexes, then 1-mile 'overland' hexes, then one-quarter mile (440 yards) 'tactical' hexes, then each of those can be gridded with 10-yard squares for a B2-style map. In areas where we adventure a lot I end up skipping the 1-mile hexes entirely and go straight to the quarter-mile hexes, but for quick and easy hexcrawling games I use 6- and 1-mile the most, and never bother with the tactical hex.

What are the big hex coordinates for? Is those for you own campaign map or are they supposed to fit onto a TSR map?

Thanks! The hex coordinates are for the map of my own campaign. The goal is to release the hexes through the Patreon in "clusters" -- a central 6-mile hex with the six hexes surrounding it -- and once a cluster is done I'm going to compile them into a single pdf and release them through drivethrurpg. I'm probably going to be releasing some broad setting stuff through the Patreon in the next few months.

I've updated the Patreon with a larger hex map showing the relationship of the hexes I've posted so far. It's a free post, so you can see it without pledging.

I just posted a short, two-page document detailing the steps I go through to actually populate a hex. It's free and available to everyone, backer or not. You can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/populating-hexes-18729228

The newest hex for Populated Hexes is up, behind schedule, but it is there. It features a plateau beset by a petrifying curse unleashed by a portal to the plane of elemental earth, a lone triceratops, and rules for using ley lines in your OSR games as a source of magical energy to power wizard's labs, gates to other worlds, and similar large scale magical endeavours.

The new hex is up, coming in at a whopping 20 pages! It includes two pieces of art, including the illustration of the village of Liwil, above, by Aaron Schmidt, village encounters, a detailed look at the dryads of Absalom and their relationship to Faery, and the half-dryad and knight classes.
I've also commissioned art from Chad Dickhaut to use in future hexes, so look forward to there being more art!

Yeah, it's really great. I've been working with Aaron since the end of my last cluster of hexes; he did a bunch of maps for the compilation of the first cluster that should be ready in the next month or so. He has a really neat old school style.

New hex (actually, two hexes) is up, featuring the above giant ant colony as well as a writeup of the cleric class that imagines it as a mash-up between B/X and 5e.

New hex is up (https://www.patreon.com/posts/hex-14-21-to-28181955). The penultimate hex in the cluster, hex 14.21 features a gateway to the Pallid Fields, a winterbound realm of Faery, a ravenous crocodile, a lovelorn mad hermit, and much more. Also includes rules for ritual casting higher level spells in B/X-style games and an alternate cleric class. If anyone is interested in checking out the content, I'm running a game here (see sig) set in this world, with the expanded class rules.
