The man looks up from his cot in the common house and grins. Now there is a face I am happy to see! The big man stands up and walks over to give him a heart "man hug". He as feeling much more himself now that he was almost completely healed. You want my pearl? Meh, okay. Not really using it so go ahead. We can work out something later I guess if you really want to , but I am just glad to see it put to use. Not really anywhere to sell stuff or buy when you think of it. Here you go... he hands it over after fishing it out of his pack. What's you spell going to do?SirOwen wrote:Late on the evening of the 11th
Avaala the Grey
Hoping that the lateness of the hour will help to catch him at home, Avaala and Treasure knock on the door of the shack where Monocar resides. "Monocar, I am sorry to disturb you, but I am afraid I need to ask a favor of you." If those words do not cause the Man Mountain to turn away, Avaala continues. "I need to ask you for a loan of sorts. A spell that I can cast requires the sacrifice of a pearl. I have already used the one from my share of the giant crab's stash, and I wonder if I might get yours? I will pay you back for it, when I have the money, and if you like, I could put down 25% now. I was hoping since you are my partner in our eventual lumber yard, you might not require a downpayment OR any interest, but I also understand that business is business."

Avaala the Grey
Avaala fetches a sigh of relief when Monocar hands him the pearl. "Thank you. The spell is used to Identify the magic in an item, to let me know what it does and how to use it. Something we found in the jungle." Avaala carefully places the pearl in his coin pouch and tucks it back under his robes. "I don't doubt that money is coming our way. Once it does, I'll pay you for this. Partners keep their words."

Raythan laughs for the first time that Jaxsen can remember. The half-elf's laughter sounds a little sad to the disciplined human.SirOwen wrote:Jaxsen Reiter
Speaking to Raythan.
"Liam," says the young Monk. "I do not believe I know anyone by that name. Do his efforts help the hive? If so, you know I will strive mightily to help."
"He is a lot like you in that way, yes. He came here from the mainland by my request after spending every copper coin he had on all those animals and new buildings you see outside. The man is a bit eccentric, but as hard a worker as you will......well, he is a very hard worker."

Monocar
Monocar perks up. Wow! So... does the pearl only let you do it once? I have a sword that I know is magicy, but I really don't know how other than it feels... well... when I swing it I feel like it is more a part of my arm, if you get my meaning. More natural than.... natural.SirOwen wrote:Avaala the Grey

"Unfortunately, the spell takes the pearl each time. I would need another one to learn the exact nature of the enchantment on your sword," Avaala answers Monocar. "But, of course, if we can get another pearl, I would be happy to find out for free."

Avaala the Grey
Avaala winks at Monocar, stands straight as an arrow and uses his 'official announcement' voice. "Sir, I must inform you that you are treading on the official bailiwick of the Beachtown Mage's Guild! While we are happy to buy or sell magical items as available, Master Chauncey and myself must ask that you refrain from intruding on what we consider our official business." He allows his posture to return to a less formal position. "And I promise that Chauncey will NOT try to open a saw mill. Fortunately, as a member in good standing of the Woodworker's and Cabinetmakers Guild, I can freely operate in both." Monocar can probably tell that Avaala is struggling to keep a straight face.

Avaala says simply, "No, please do not open a magic shop, Monocar. You'll piss off Chauncey because magic is his business, see?" He lets that sink in and adds, "And I can guarantee that Chauncey will not open a lumber mill."

Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Days 11 and 12
Jaxsen Reiter
Jaxsen follows Raythan's advice and seeks out Liam. Not finding him, the young Monk goes over the fencing and corrals, makes the acquaintance of the other people who have been helping already and tries to tighten up loose boards, drive posts in snugger, make sure the stock is fed and watered. Anything he can see that needs improvement, he will work to improve or repair.
And then he will discover the hives......
Jaxsen will spend several minutes just listening to the hives. The sound seems an almost holy thing to him, relaxing, meditative, even. Then, as though something in the sound spoke to him, he goes to work. He begins to work on raising and narrowing the bases of the hives, making it more difficult for walking and climbing predators to get to them.
He goes over to the fishermen's area and collects sections of worn out netting. 'Too weak for fish maybe, but strong enough for what I need.' he says to himself. He then begins taking the nets and precisely tightening the weave with bits of string, eventually closing it to the point where the bees can come and go, but nothing larger can pass through. He spends the day and into the evening working on the weave, listening to the humming of the hives, humming along and mixing prayers to Bralm with the rhythms as he works. His focus is intense and he works quickly yet carefully, making sure of the size of the weave is exactly what he wants to defend the hives from any larger predators. When he is happy with the weave, he allows himself to stop and set them aside. He eats and drinks, finally, before going through his evening exercises, ritual bathing and devotions in the dark.
The next morning, Jax gets up gathers some bamboo. He avoids the strongest sections as they will be needed for other things, and just takes pieces strong enough to support the netting. He then begins to dig holes and set the bamboo stakes around the hives, just tall enough to allow the netting to protect them without touching them. He ties the sections tightly, making the frame as strong as it can be given the materials at hand. When he is happy with it, he will take the sections of netting and lay them over and across the frame, careful to overlap the sections, knowing that gaps will be found.
When the project is complete, Jax enters the framework and begins to remove the predators already inside. He is careful not to kill them, knowing that they, too, are the Queen's Children. Finally, he sits down beside the hives and allows himself an hour of meditation, relaxing in the sussurant hum of the hives. When he finally gets up to leave, he is careful to make his devotions. "Thank you, O Queen, for this gift. I shall endeavor to protect these lost Children, and work even harder for your edification."
OM, I am guessing this should be wrapped up by lunchtime on Day 12. But if you think longer, just let me know.

Day 12
Avaala the Grey
Avaala wakes early on the twelfth day. He and Treasure make for the Treehouse for breakfast and a short rum each. Avaala hoists his glass, turns to Treasure and says, "To Rollo! No finer dog have I ever known. Faithful, Ferocious and Strong. I'll miss you. Good boy!"
Is that a gp apiece for the drinks and a silver apiece for the stew? Just checking.

Day 12 after breakfast.
Avaala the Grey
After leaving the Treehouse, Treasure and Avaala seek out Chauncey and Mr. Wrenly. "It seems we have one more day to share spells before we seek out this Priest in the jungle. Randall at the Treehouse says he got the impression that the man is very powerful. We should be as powerful as we can be, also."
EDITED: "I have some spells left in the found book, and I have my own spell grimoire. Have you any idea which spell you want to add to your yet? I think I will take the falling protection charm from the found spell book."

“After seeing the usefulness of Lerrick’s tree-climbing antics, I am inclined to learn the spell of Spiderlike Climbing. It could, perhaps, come in handy on this mission. No doubt, if properly applied, with exquisite timing, it will allow me to once again save the day,” says Chauncey. “Let us begin!”
Re: Everyday Life in Beachtown
Avaala the Grey
"Excellent!" says Avaala. "This will make us about as dangerous and diverse as we can be. Let's get started."
OK, then we can chalk up a spell each to our books. I'll remove them from the Inventory, and I think that leaves us ready for day 13 and the Cleric hunt!
EDIT: Looks like Avaala will NOT be learning Feather Fall. He cannot understand it sufficiently.
Can Avaala learn Feather Fall? (75%) [1d100] = 85
OK, OM, how fast does Avaala figure out that the spell is beyond him? Is there time to try another spell? And does this LOSE the spell?

The spell isn't lost, Avaala just doesn't understand the way it was formulated in the book and therefore cannot learn it.SirOwen wrote: EDIT: Looks like Avaala will NOT be learning Feather Fall. He cannot understand it sufficiently.

However, the time it takes him to realize that he cant understand it will prevent him from using the entire day to transpose another. Sorry.
