After talking privately to Luther, Chauncey moves off to find Avalaa to make plans for the transcription of spells tomorrow late morning or early afternoon. As he searches, he keeps an eye out for Lightfinger. As he passes by Monocar he holds up his hand without breaking stride. “Mr. Wrenly, we have business to attend to, if you would be so kind.” The monkey leans forward, grasping the cheeks of the giant and giving them a squeeze as he shrieks, bearing his fangs, his face upside down and three inches from Monocar’s own, before leaping to the wizard’s upper arm. This seems to be friendly monkey behavior.
Upon finding Avalaa: “Avalaa! You are not alone in having a new friend. Let me introduce to you my new associate, Mr. Wrenly! He is no mere monkey, as I’m sure you will instantly ascertain. He will be an equal partner in the Guild, Master of the Twelve Realms of Ephesius shall be his title!”
I'm sorry, but I'm a little lost. Which day is Chauncey introducing Avaala to Mr. Wrenly? And if that's the 10th, are we not planning on moving against the evil Cleric until the 12th? Mind you, and extra day with the books and new spells would be very welcome!
Wes told the phanaton it would be the 11th or 12th so that everybody would be healed and have max spells. Now that he's down to 3hp himself, it will definitely be the 12th.
Avaala nods to Chauncey's new friend. "I am pleased to make your acquaintance, I am sure, Mr. Wrenly." Turning to Chauncey once more, he adds, "If we are to have another day of study, it will benefit both of us greatly. The book I recovered had no less than eight spells in it, none of which were already in our possession. I have completed the translation, and actually copied one of the spells into my own book and it is ready for your perusement. The two spells of mine that are ready for immediate translation into your book are the spell I mentioned earlier which can render yourself or another person, and their possessions totally transparent. The other is a binding spell for use on doors, windows and other portals of a non-magical nature. It holds them securely closed."
Avaala takes a deep breath, and adds, "Pardon my long-windedness. My excitement has been building since I discovered the contents of the book. Pray, take your turn and tell me what you have discovered!"
“Eight spells?!” exclaims Chauncey. He finds he must steady himself. “Well done, Avalaa. I have but three, I’m afraid, and have yet to transcribe them into my own book. They are formulae which produce the following results: one to envelop thine enemies in noxious, debilitating fumes; one to rise straight into the air, as if untethered from the very earth! And, finally, a dweomer that produces multiple, identical yet illusiory versions of the caster to confound thine enemies!”
"Then we have gained ten spells," says Avaala. "As I believe only one of the spells I found duplicates one of yours. The one that permits rising up from the earth." Avaala looks dumbfounded. "Ten new spells!"
He looks to Treasure, "Surely you have brought luck along with your counsel and friendship, Treasure!"
"As for the other spells I have found,"continues Avaala. "There is an enchantment that causes distracting lights to appear and mislead your enemies. Another that, should you fall from a great height allows you to instantly reduce your mass to that of a leaf and flutter to the ground unharmed. One of them creates a pushing force of pure magical enemy to shove against a target of your choice. There is a spell that lets you climb like an insect up a wall or tree. Another of them opens locked and barred doors, and I suspect it might even overcome the door holding spell I mentioned. And finally, one of them seems designed to overcome the transparency spell I have and allow the target of that spell to be seen normally."
As the maji converse, Treasure puffs up with pride, not really sure what part he played in the location of all these new spells.
"You are correct, Avaala. My old mast......." the tiny, odd looking dragon stops abruptly, mid sentence before continuing again.
"I used to bring very good fortune to those around me. It is a gift.....I suppose. It sounds like you two have your work cut out for you with all of this new writing and learning, yes? Will we still go on great adventures together? I still want to help these people, and I think Mr. Wrenly is starting to like me, too. He is a strange looking creature though, isn't he? Does he speak?"
Avaala nods to Treasure. "Most assuredly we will be going on adventures. As it appears right now, the day after tomorrow, we will be going to investigate and stop an evil Cleric that has been terrorizing both the natives and the Phanaton tree people."
"That should help the people of our village in a number of ways. It gets the friendship of the Phanaton and the villagers, who already know a lot about farming on the island. With their help, there won't be a lot of wasted time trying to figure out what and how to farm here."
More quietly, almost a whisper, he adds, "Treasure, you have started to talk about your old Master a number of times. If you want to talk about him, I'd be glad to hear your tales. Any time."
Mr. Wrenly blinks several times at Treasure, then approaches, feels one of his wings out of curiosity and then sits next to him, taking one of the ancient creature’s hands in his paws. He sits quietly while the conversation continues.
Treasure studies the movements of the lesser creature carefully and before long, they are practicing picking fleas off of each other.
The dragon tries talking to Mr. Wrenly several times before giving up, assuming it lacks the ability to communicate with higher forms of life.
He eventually answers Avaala in front of the group.
"It isn't that I don't want to talk about the old days, I just.......I can only remember bits and pieces of my past life. I know I served another. A great and powerful wizard. I believe that this was all his at one time." The dragon waves his tiny arm out wide, to indicate the entire island behind him.
"But I don't remember anything else about him. I still feel his power working here, but I don't think he is around anymore. I don't know what I should do. If he is still out there somewhere, and is expecting me to come back to him, then what? I cant link myself to another until I am certain that my old master is........no longer around. I hope you can all understand that."
Avaala smiles at Treasure. "Of course I understand. It is a powerful bond, not to be undertaken lightly or disposed of on a whim. I only hope that, should it become evident that a new bonding is possible, you will consider me. I would be honored beyond words."
"You have done nothing so far to dissuade my desire to do just that, friend. And I thank you again for your patience while I work this all out in my head. I know I have a purpose here, and I want to be sure of that purpose before I burden anyone else with it."
The monkey and the dragon continue to get acquainted while the wizards decide what spells to attempt to learn next. They know that it will take quite a bit of time to share their findings and copy them all into their own books, so they waste little time on other things for the next several hours.
"Since we need to be ready for action by the day after tomorrow," Avaala says to Chauncey. "Perhaps we should make it a point, for now, to translate different spells in order to have a maximum variety. When we get back, we can translate more until we both have copied our entire inventory." He leafs through the book at his desk. "I plan to translate this spell next. The one that defeats the transparency charm."
CP, the spells in that book are on my sheet, under notes. You might also want to look through my spell book, since I already have Invisibility and Hold Portal in it.
Chauncey indicates that he will first be translating into his book the formula that produces multiple illusiory copies of the caster. “I feel your choice is wise, only take into account that I still have the Stone of Seeing Invisible Things, with, I believe, one charge left, if that influences your decision. You must, however, do as you see fit,” he says. “I will go now to begin my work.” He leaves, with Mr. Wrenly following soon after. Upon departing, the monkey stands up and more or less walks, duplicating the magician’s gait surprisingly accurately.
Wes stands in front of the vegetable gardens and prepares to summon the power of Obad Hai to bless them. He meditates for a moment and then sends a brief prayer to The Shalm.“Obad Hai, please don’t hold my foolishness against these folk. Make these gardens bountiful so that the people will know your power”.
Wes steps forward and invokes the power of Obad Hai on the garden that contains the ripest vegetables and the least amount of weeds. Once he has cast this incantation, Wes hobbles down to the sea and cleans off the bone he cut from Pterry’s carcass. Then he returns to his shack and begins the process of preparing it for use in his new spell.
