Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Wes
"I understand and respect your reasons", replies Wes. "Protection of our children is something we all have in common. And you are right, we must learn to live together. There are enough dangerous things on this island already."
"There are a few folks here who are scared of the phanaton though. One man tells stories that you steal children. We need to be ready for this. Your idea to give the baby to her mother is good, but please be ready if there's trouble. Galanthas and I will do our very best to stop this. And the town leaders should be on our side".
Wes turns to Galanthas. "Chwee wants to present the child as a gift. I've told him that's a fine idea, but warned him too".
"You should explain what's happened when Nehru arrives. i'll interpret for Chwee."
"I hope Marge arrives soon. She's a bit more level-headed than Nehru. And that new Liam chap seems like a good fella too."

Galanthas smirks at the idea of the meat being boar or deer... "Well... Not exactly juicy venison, unfortunately. It's from a... a very large bird, you know."
Then, turning to Wes he says: "Yes, I understand. It's a good thing if the town and us, for that matter, can have the Phanatons at our side. Having allies in this dangerous island is a great advantage. Besides, they know the forest well and whatever lurks there.
On the other hand, if I tell them what we did back in the cave, how do the Phanaton get any credit for it? They just fed the baby when we had done everything. The only thing that may sound honorable in the villagers' eyes is the fact that they were too worried about the well-being of the baby and they agreed to bring it back to town with us. It's not like they did that much." He shruggs his shoulders at this last sentence.

Back At Beachtown
Godsday, 9th of Goodmonth
Afternoon, Hot, Sunny, Humid
The fire cook takes the stringy pterodactyl meat from Galanthas and looks it over carefully. “Jeez! What kind of bird was it! A dead one? This smells horrible. And it’s full of dried blood and sand. We might have to smoke this stuff to make it edible. Thanks all the same though! You guys are really helping out a lot here, and most of us really appreciate it!” He takes the meat off to wash before placing it in their makeshift grass hut smoker.
After a minute, Marge waddles her way down to the beach to see what is going on there. She is shocked to see the tree dwellers, but even more so once she spots the child.
“Wes! What is happening here? Where did you find the baby? And for Pelor’s sake, why is it in the hands of these little tree rats?”
Chwee looks back at Wes, having no idea what Marge is shouting about. “Is this the child’s mother, then?”

"Galanthas will explain", says Wes, nodding at the elf.
Turning to Chwee, he begins to explain. "No, she's not the mother...It's hard to explain. She is a bit like the Senior Female in this town. Do you have such a role in your tribe? She is respected for her wisdom and her ability to organize things, such as collecting water for the town".
The druid pause for a moment, trying to think of a way to be diplomatic. "She is surprised to see us, and the child. She's also wondering why you have the little girl. Galanthas will explain everything."

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Galanthas approaches Marge and extends his hand in order to shake hers, bowing his head in a perhaps exagerated gesture. "Well met, Marge. My name is Galanthas and I hail from the Dim Forest. I arrived recently because I'm searching for someone, but that's something we could better talk about later.
So, to the matter at hand: Wes and I found this cave at the other side of the river, where a hag lives. I'm gonna spare you the details but we killed her after some hard fighting. We heard a baby crying somewhere inside the cave but also some strange noises that warned us of the presence of some kind of monster. Fearing that the crying wasn't something natural and being severly wounded, we decided to come back to Beachtown. Nevertheless, that night we kept thinking of the possibility that it was a real baby we left there at the cave, so first thing we did yesterday early in the morning was to get ready and get back to that stinking den of evil.
We found some weird creatures there. A kind of flying jellyfish and some tentacle that attacked us from a grid on the floor. I almost got killed, but thanks to Wes' god and his action as an intermediary I got... partially healed." He points as his friend with a ceremonious hand gesture.
"Anyway, we saw the baby there in a box. We were taken aback by its markings and we decided to spend the night there, not wanting to risk the trip back, due to our bad state. We gave the baby some smashed fruits and water, but it kept crying all the time.
On the way back we kept walking back to town as fast as we could. Avoiding a band of brigands that tried to assault us! Then the Phanaton appeared at the forest rim staring at us and we were attacked at the same moment by Pterry, the flying dinosaur. It almost killed me but we defended ourselves and we hacked its head off." He points at his sack, stained with blood, that the men there are emptying. "The Phanaton took the baby from me when they saw me weakened just after the fight. We thought they wanted to kidnap the baby or even eat it. But when we approached, arms in hand, we actually saw that they were feeding and pampering it! Wes began to talk with them in their strange language.
Apparently the Phanaton didn't trust us taking care of the baby, due to its bad condition, which is understandable after having been in that cave, and wanted to take it with them to take care of it. But Wes told them that it actually has a mother and that our plan is to return it to her. The Phanaton were happy with the answer, but wanted to make sure that we kept our word so they came along with us up to here.
It seems that they deeply care about the baby and know how to handle it..." Galanthas lies here, much to his chagrin, knowing that it was the blood that kept the baby from crying, but he can't shake off the possibility that it was thanks to the Phanaton that the baby calmed down, not wanting to accept the fact that the baby drank blood and was satisfied.
"And that's basically it." He bows slightly, opening his arms to both sides and showing his palms pointing upwards, as if to accompany the conclusion of the story with a gesture. The elf then turns to his friend and tells him: "If there's something you want to add..."

Wes takes up the opportunity offered by Galanthas. "So the Phanaton, led by this fella Chwee, want to give the little girl back to her mother themselves. They want to show everybody that they are not unfriendly or dangerous. They care for children as much as we do".
"Chwee wants to show the folk of Beachtown that the Phanaton are friendly. He wants us to work together, not be afraid of each other".

Back At Beachtown
Godsday, 9th of Goodmonth
Afternoon, Hot, Sunny, Humid
Marge’s face goes through a myriad of expressions as she listens to the wild tale of Galanthas. She looks back and forth from him, to Wes, to the baby often as he speaks. She glares at the phanaton as Wes offers his thoughts.
”I think I see what’s happening here. But I can’t say that I agree with your logic on this. What do you think the mother.......and worse yet......the father, will think when they see these creatures with their baby? I know what I thought, and it wasn’t positive. This is a touchy situation. I appreciate that the monkoons want to show that they are friendly, but if some folks get the impression that they had the baby this whole time, this could turn ugly fast.”
The wise old woman thinks to herself for a moment longer before finishing.
“Give me the baby! I will hand it over to the mother and tell them that you ALL helped in returning it. She doesn’t need to know any specific details right away. This will be quite a shock to them both, I’m sure!”
She reaches down to grab the baby from the phanaton who quickly move it away from her. Chwee looks up at Wes in confusion.
“This is not the mother? Yet she tries to take the child from us? What is happening here, Wes?”
A female shriek is heard over near the common housing, proving that word travels fast in this tiny beachside village. A group of people begin to rush from that side of town towards you.

"She means no harm Chwee. But you can hear that folk know the child is here now, and that you have her. I told you before that some folk still feel afraid of the phanaton, and will blame you, not praise you, if you hold her." Wes does his best to remain calm, whilst injecting a sense of urgency into his voice.
"I beg you, please give the baby to Galanthas until we can tell the folk how you have helped her. They won't listen to voices now, only their feelings. You know that will be bad"
"Think if you saw a phanaton baby being held by strange humans. What would you do?"

Galanthas looks at the villagers crowding in the distance. "It would be better if we deliver the baby ourselves, with the Phanaton here next to us, to show that they are pacific and can be friendly... And good allies in this god forgotten island. After all, we are all here together, and are calm, with you, Marge, no one can deduce we're having any problem here."
He then turns to Chwee, like waiting for him to handle him the basket with the baby, smiling.
If the villagers get close enough he'll yield "We rescued the baby! With the help of the Phanaton!". Maybe that'll puzzle them long enough so they not rip us to shreds.

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Back At Beachtown
Godsday, 9th of Goodmonth
Afternoon, Hot, Sunny, Humid
The group of villagers begins to run towards the assembled group. While Wes is speaking with Chwee, Marge simply walks up to the the much smaller creature and rips the basket from its arms. With little more than a smile from the large woman, she turns to address the oncoming crowd with the basket held out in front of her.
"Our precious Penny has been returned to us!!! Pelor be praised!!!" Marge visibly stifles her religious praise and looks around nervously for a moment, as if she said something wrong.
Chwee and the other phanaton look around confused at the shouting woman, but they don't react negatively to the baby being stripped from them.
Marge continues. "These fine gentlemen, with the help of their jungle animal friends, have found and rescued our lost child!"
Once the group gets near enough, the baby's parents rush forth to claim their offspring. The celebration of smiles and cheers that follows is a pleasant change from the pairs usual homecomings. Galanthas and Wes are soon enveloped with back patting and handshaking, the mob almost pushing them back out of town from their robust welcome. Initially, the phanaton are pretty much ignored by the townies, most of them going out of their way to keep their distance from the strange creatures. But once the child's mother is satisfied that her babe is well enough, she steps away from the main group and walks over to the treelings. She kneels down and holds her baby close to her bosom despite the horrified stares from many onlookers. Knowing that the creatures cant understand her, she mouths two simple words, hoping they have heard them before. "Thank You!"
Tears of joy stream down the elated woman's face.

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Galanthas feels a bit awkward at all this attention and it can be told by the look on his face. "It's fine, it's fine... We just did what we could... Ugh! Careful with that wound there!" Then, he suddenly realizes that he is the centre of attention so his demeanour changes suddenly, he straightens up and says, clearing his throat: "Oh, yes, yes! It was hard, but we managed to overcome all those terrible monsters we faced."

Wes
The druid winces when he sees what Marge has done, but relaxes once he sees that the phanaton are not enraged or too upset by her action. He calls out to them "It's good Chwee, it's good. It's all going to be good".
Like Galanthas, Wes modestly accepts the praise and thanks of the villagers. "Well, we just did what we had to do really. Dangerous? A bit yes. A drink? Very kind of you. I wouldn't say no..."
He also makes sure to mention his diety a few times. "Of course, it wouldn't have been possible for us to save Penny without the great power of Obad Hai, praise him! If anybody wants to hear the whole story I'll be happy to tell it tomorrow, over by The Shalm's tree..."
Once he manages to pull himself out of the crowd, he returns to Chwee and the other phanaton. "You can see how happy everybody is Chwee. You have all helped to bring great joy here."
"I hope you are not upset that everybody is ignoring you. They are just unsure right now. You can see that her mother knows what you have done. The word will begin to spread through the humans. Galanthas and I will tell our story to the leaders here. I think that today was a big step forward for humans to learn to respect the phanaton".

The two heroes enjoy their accolades, happy to bring smiles to the faces of these downtrodden humans. A young woman begins to tend to the horrific wounds on the elf’s face and neck. The parents of the child make a very big deal about letting the adventurers know if they ever need anything from them, all they need do is ask. A few people hang their heads once Wes starts god dropping again. When he mentions his tree, some of them actually turn away from the druid completely.
The phanaton keep to the outskirts of the celebrations, trying not to get steeped on. Chwee is very pleased when Wes explains the humans reaction to him. Though, he seems to be less concerned about the celebration as he is about the problems his people still face.
“Tell me Wes, does this mean that the hooman monster in the jungle will stop slaughtering us now?”

"Sadly, no Chwee. That human is not one of these humans. He is bad, evil. He would probably kill these humans as much as he would kill your people. The folk here can learn to respect your people. The human in the jungle won't, ever."
The druid crouches down on the sand next to Chwee. "I will do what I can to help your people. Soon, there will be many adventurers like me in this town. I'll see if I can find some who want to come with me to find the bad human and stop him."
"I will meet you out here every evening and we can talk about how we can plan to do this".

Galanthas stands at first there letting the woman tend to his wounds and showing her gratitude for it. He then approaches Wes and the Phanaton and squats down next to them, offering his hand in sign of friendship. The elf wonders if this gesture is something alien for them or not. He says to Wes "I may be coming to your preaching tomorrow at your tree. After all, Obad Hai has saved my skin several times in two days already... Concerning the Phanaton and this evil man you told me about awhile ago... I think we should discuss it and maybe ask around town, because I think there's something we could do about it. We shouldn't get into town without talking with the Phanaton about this, we gave them our word."

"We are creatures of action, Wes. We have noticed that you hoomans.......are not. We don't talk things over forever before we do them, we agree on a choice of action, and then do it. We have been waiting around for something to be done about this evil hooman in the jungle for too long already."
The phanaton rustles up his group and points to the east, indicating that they are leaving.
"I will be back when the sun is on the horizon. I will wait for you right over there. I hope your decision will be swift."
The parents of the recovered baby agree to buy the men and the monkoons something to eat and drink at the Treehouse, looking around nervously and wondering how they will actually pay for their generous offer.

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Galanthas will let himself be carried by the people to be fed
But first want to see how the interaction between Wes and Chwee develops (considering Wes translates it for him).

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Wes
Wes frowns at Chwee. “Now be reasonable Chwee. Galanthas and I have just returned from fighting that terrible hag and her pet. We are exhausted and injured. We need to rest. And we don’t even know if there are any other folk here who can help us yet. You say this evil man kills phanaton by the hundred. He would certainly kill just the two of us. And if we die, then there is no one to help you.”
Wes, as a druid of Obad Hai, god of the hunt, tries to his get his point over to Chwee.“You say that you like to take swift actions Chwee. Well, consider this: think of all those dangerous big cats out there in the jungle. Do they hunt phanaton? I’ll bet they do. How do they do it? Do they just run in and attack, and hope for the best? Or do they take their time and move slowly, then strike from nowhere and make a kill?”
“That is how hunters work Chwee. We take our time so that we can be sure of a kill. We will help you. But it will take two or three days to gather our strength”
Wes also addresses the young couple with a smile, “Oh there’s no need for any fancy rewards. Your smiles are enough…..although this servant of The Shalm would be grateful if perhaps you have an old coin purse or a small bottle you could offer him?”
Finally, he clasps Galanthas around the shoulder when the elf says he will attend Wes’ service in the morning.“You’ll be most welcome, my good friend!”

Back At Beachtown
Godsday, 9th of Goodmonth
Afternoon, Hot, Sunny, Humid
Chwee seems to understand the wisdom of the druid. "We will wait........but not for long!" is all he replies before they all suddenly dart into the trees and disappear.
The parents of the child are relieved when the pair downplays the celebration, not having anything to offer them in the way of money. The father pulls out his own coin purse and offers it to the druid."Not sure why I still carry this thing around with me here when nobody has a copper piece to their name, but you are welcome to it if you want. There are plenty of empty bottles laying in Randall's garbage pile under his tavern, too."
When Wes and Galanthas plan to meet at his tree, he looks in that direction and is alarmed to see that someone has obviously tampered with his shrine to the Shalm.
