Wes

Sheltering behind the tree, Wes decides that best plan involves remaking concealed. He takes out his mistletoe and begins the magic that allows folks to go unseen by animals. With the great lizard-bird only a short distance away, he's glad that this spell has no spoken words that might give away his position. Once the magic is done, he lightly touches Galanthas on the shoulder, bestowing it on him.

"Go. Now." he mouthes. Pointing at the baby, he adds "Quietly".

Pterry screeches loudly.

The baby wails.

Pterry screeches even louder, starting to poke into the trees a little further.

The baby continues to wail after every screech from the massive flying beast. This goes on, back and forth, the whole time that Wes takes out his holly and begins rubbing it all over Galanthas. The phanaton watch the whole affair with shocked interest.

The elf looks back at the druid while the child continues to scream, seemingly unconcerned about the noise that the child is making. The last thing he tells the elf is to run away, quietly.

As soon as Galanthas takes off out of the jungle and starts running back up the beach, the monster pulls itself back out of the trees and immediately follows the noise of the screaming child. It doesn't seem to spot the pair as he runs, but it takes off after them all the same.

Galanthas quickly realizes that he wont be able to outrun this thing across the sandy beach for long.

Wes

The constant wailing of the baby once again reminds Wes why he prefers to wander out in the wilds, risking being eaten by wild animals, rather than settle down to a life of domesticity...

He leaps to his feet and once again tries to summon the power of Obad Hai, hoping to paralyze the flying lizard before it catches Galanthas.

Seeing the situation is starting to become dire, Galanthas decides to cast a Sleep spell on Pterry, hoping that his only enchantment will take effect.

Galanthas panics slightly when he realizes that the monster can still clearly hear the crying from the tired, hungry, and dehydrated baby. He stops fleeing the scene and spins around to cast a spell at Pterry. The baby screams as he finishes his conjuring, and the flying beast doesn't seem to be affected by the magic of the elf.

Unfortunately, since he has attempted an attack upon the thing, the monster can clearly see him now. It snaps its jaws down hard, nearly biting the elf's head off in the process. 7 dam The baby suddenly stops its crying too, but neither male can tell if she was bitten as well or not, since she is being carried on Galanthas's back.

Wes sees things going from bad to worse, so he steps out of the bush and begins casting as well. His powerful spell stops Pterry in his tracks, causing the beast to freeze in place just as it was about to bite the elf a second time.

The phanaton seem shocked by this sudden turn of events, leaping from their trees and vines, trying to reach the vulnerable monster held on the beach.

Despite being all covered in blood, Galanthas doesn't stop to see if the baby is alright or not. He faces the primeval beast as he sees it doesn't move after Wes' spell and chops its head off without a second thought.

Wes

The druid smiles with relief, seeing that his magic has saved Galanthas and the baby from further attack. He's also relieved that the great beast is unharmed and will be free to fly away once it the magical paralysis has worn off.

That's why he is startled to see the phanaton burst from the trees and rush the lizard creature, apparently intent on harming it. "No! No! You don't understand! Leave it be!" he cries out, turning towards the phanaton and waving his arms trying to stop them.

Barely able to stand, with blood oozing from his face, neck, and shoulder, Galanthas rises and draws his sword against the now immobile monster.

Wes is glad to see that the creature wasn’t harmed, and that they will now have time to escape its dangerous clutches. He focuses his attention on the growing number of phanaton exiting the jungle, heading for the vulnerable foe. He is shocked beyond belief when he sees his elf companion chopping with his sword into the neck of the monster several times until it is eventually decapitated and quite dead.

The treefolk also appear rather astonished at the sight of the splattering blood and bits of flesh flying through the air as the beasts large, pointy head is eventually dropped to the sand. They all seem very excited at the site of the dead monster, jumping and screeching wildly. Four of them grab ahold of the severed head and start dragging it into the jungle. Several more jump onto the things body, tearing huge chunks of meat off of the dead bones.

Two phanaton approach Galanthes, one of them stands in front of him while the other moves around him and jumps upon his back. He seems to be trying to get at the now silent baby.

Wes

The druid turns as the phanaton run past him and sees the decapitated monster and Galanthas' bloody sword. "NO! What have you done?", he cries. Shocked, he starts to run toward the bloody chaos on the beach.

As he gets there, intending to remonstrate with Galanthas, Wes sees what the phanaton are doing. Realizing that the fallen beast can at least provide food for Beachtown, he at first decides to try and cut out a share of meat before they take it all. He can argue with Galanthas later.

Then Wes sees the phanaton trying to climb on Galanthas and reach the baby. Still not believing that they actually mean any harm to the child, he still wants to see why they are so keen to reach it. He moves as quick as he can to aid Galanthas.

Galanthas steps back as he sees the Phanaton going like crazy for the baby, screaming and swinging his sword to keep them back (not to hurt them) while screaming "You're not touching this baby, little beasts! Enough that you've taken the monster I killed away!. The adrenaline rush from the confrontation still visible in his attitude. Wes, take something of the monster with you, to bring as proof to town, so that the people there know there's no more danger from it. I'll try to keep the baby to safety from this little beasts and then we can go back together! As he says this last part, he's asking himself if the baby might not be quite alive now...

Wes rushes up to cut some meat from the flying lizard, finding its skin leathery and tough, making any steaks difficult to harvest. The phanaton don't seem to mind him doing so at all. In fact, they move over to give him some room at the carcass.

Galanthas spins and dodges as the tree dwellers continue trying to get at the baby he has protected for so long. A few more of them join in on the fight, not trying to harm him, just desperately trying to get the baby from its makeshift basket. After a few moments, one of them is successful in apprehending the infant from the badly injured elf. That phanaton plucks the child out from Galanthas's strange back papoose and tosses it to another phanaton on the beach. As soon as they have the child secured, several of them gather around it to attempt to keep the pair of adventurer from reclaiming their prize. They didn't appear to run off or hurt the child in any way when they wrestled it from the crazed and bloodied elf, but neither of you can actually tell what the small creatures are doing to it now unless you get in for a closer look first.

Galantas stays there, startled at first, then curious. Now that his frenzy has ended, he sheathes his sword and approaches the group of Phanaton with the strengh he can still gather after so many wounds. "Wes, could you please do something to speak with these little beasts and tell them we wanted to bring the baby back to her rightful mother?!", he says, without looking away from the Phanaton.

Wes

Wes looks around at the phanaton and tries to see if any of them are watching him. He holds out his empty hands slowly to try and show he's not intent on taking any aggressive actions and makes eye contact with any that are watching him. The druid wonders if any of these phanaton are from the group he spoke to several days ago. They'd be less likly to spook, he thinks. Anyway, we've just fed them. We can't be all bad...

He begins the incantation that will allow him to communicate with the phanaton.

Once it's complete, he calls out to the group: "Hello there again my friends! May we ask what you are doing with the child? She was lost and we are trying to return her to her mother in the human village."

Galanthas calms down, sheathing his sword after realizing that the treefolk are not his enemy. He watches their dealings with the baby closely as Wes begins a spell.

The phanaton circled around the child appear to be trying to give it some water from a small gourd-like container one of them has in their possession. They wipe the sprayed blood away from the child's face, and when the pair of adventurers gets closer, they realize that the child stopped balling once she had some hot blood to suck on.

Wes finishes his spell, having no idea if any of these creatures have ever seen him before since they all literally look exactly the same to him. He speaks to them again in a friendly manner.

One of the larger phanaton turns from the circle to answer the half-elf, not at all freaked out by the fact that he can suddenly speak to them now.

"Have either of you two ever cared for a human baby before? This poor thing is at deaths door! Cant you tell by the crying that it is hungry? And thirsty!!!"

The creature turns again to watch the others carefully tend to the malnourished infant.

Wes

"No, we haven't, admits Wes. "We're adventurers, not nursemaids."

"We rescued the child from the lair of a hag, further up the beach, beyond the river. We're returning her to her mother. That's why we were rushing. We know that the baby is in danger."

Wes leans in a bit closer to talk to look at the baby. "Wait! One thing I do know though: human babies don't drink blood! That's why she's suddenly quieted! SHE'S DRINKING THE SPILLED BLOOD!"

"Was she drinking blood?" says Galanthas with a startled look on his face. Concerning the dialog between Wes and the Phanaton, the elf will just wait until the conversation is done, gulping some water from his own waterskin, cleaning his wounds with it and looking around.

Thinking of his hammock and of getting healed, he tries to relax, since the Phanaton hacking 'his prey' to pieces and taking the baby away from him was not something that made him exactly happy.

The phat phanaton continues questioning the druid, who has just come to the realization that the baby was sucking the spilled blood of Galanthas and Pterry.

"It is pretty obvious that neither of you has ever cared for a youngling before. It was lucky that we heard you and knew something was wrong."

Galanthas takes a drink and cleans his horrible wounds, the splattered blood from the massacre already drying on his skin in the hot sun. The tree dwellers continue to clean and water the baby when the lead phanaton looks sideways at Wes again.

"You took this baby from the HAG? You two must be really brave......or really dumb. Nothing travels near her area anymore!"

Wes

"I think we're both" says Wes, ruefully. "We didn't know the hag was there. It cost us three of our friends, but she's dead now. And her pet. We got them both".

He looks at the baby again. "Then we found out the child was missing. We went back to get her. We've done our best to keep her fed. Believe me, she was worse than this when we found her."

"Thank you for helping us with her. Once she is set, we can take her back to her parents." Wes nods over at the remains of Pterry. "And we'd like to take some of that too, if you can set some aside for us."

Wes stops to think for a moment. "So you knew all about the hag then? Even as far as away as that? Seems to me you might know a lot about the creatures around here. Some folk in the village believe they saw a dragon flying down by the river. Would you know anything about that?'

Don't worry about me posting any answers. Galanthas will just stay put until the interaction is done. I'm reading everything. 8-)
