CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
...
Arya examines some of the glazed material removed by Knuckles. After some fiddling, she concludes the material is similar to dried residue left over from broken eggs.
Einstein observes that the two holes form tunnels that line up with one another, across the hallway.
Knuckles uses Luke’s torch to look into the holes. Both holes go about 20ft into the wall before turning corners. The tunnels are segmented every 4ft, so they are clearly of crude, but artificial construction.
With Luke and Anne moving forward with their torches, Ralph strikes one of his to illuminate the 10ft x 10ft area.
Anne muscles her way forward, past the holes, and to the end of the corridor. She releases Sir Honkalot into the chamber connected to the hall. The goose just stands there, confused, and looks back at Anne. It meanders back and forth, but does not leave the light. Her torch illuminates the area and, with her back against the north wall, she sees the corner of a hole in the floor to the south of the entrance. Across from the hole, is an open stone door in the east wall. It has jagged edges that fit into the polygonal masonry of the walls. She can’t see much to the north from her current vantage point, but it seems to continue for at least 10ft.
Tiberius notices that the lower surface of the holes is cleaner than the sides and top. He also notices a faint path across the floor of the hallway that connects the two holes. This path is the same width as the holes and has ‘swept’ the floor slightly cleaner in this zone.
Zeek continues to look back and the entrance to this dungeon, thinking of the sunlight and open space of the outdoors.

Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
Anne will wait a little, trying to hear anything strange, like a drooling beast or something. If not, she will step in, torch in hand, to face the new door. Sure, she will glace the north direction first. For drooling beasts, you know
Zeek will keep in the back, thinking that the corn season may be over soon.
Tiberius will try to reach for Anne. He thinks her attitude may be dangerous, so he will cover her back.
LePlanck will stay in the middle, safely.

Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
...
Anne hesitates, listens, and then enters the room to examine door. She glances to the north and sees another 5ft wide corridor, with a hole or pit crossing its width. After 5-6ft, the northern hall turns 90 degrees to the east. The rice farmer crosses over to the open door, careful to avoid the 5ft x 5ft hole in the southwest corner of the floor. She stands in front of the jagged stone panel. The shape of the door is an irregular shape that matches the polygonal masonry of the wall. If the door had been closed, it would take close inspection to detect its presence.
Sir Honkalot settles in the room, penned in by the pit to the north and the people in the west hallway. He gets up when Tiberius enters and honks a few times.
Tiberius enters the room to provide cover for Anne, as she inspects the open door. He watches the goose with amusement, because a dwarf knows a farm animal is unsuited for the underdark.

Ralph Wallace, woodcutter
Moves up behind Ruby. He glances back towards Terryk.
"Come on farmer, we don't want to block the way."
Terryk Terrine, turnip farmer
Terry still looks nervous, absently stroking Camilla, but he nods and follows Ralph
Buckminster Fullerine, con-artist
Buckminster tries to get nearer the front of the group, but rather than pushing through, he tries to quietly slip through any gaps left by the others.
Loreta Swift, scribe, female
Waiting to be able to move forward, Loretta decides that this might make a good story and she could become a famous writer, so she uses to time to look around and remember as much as she can as they move through.

Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
"Einstein" McGraw and "Knuckles" Wagonwheel
These guys get up from their inspection of the tunnel.
"Some kind of worm track, I guess..." says Knuckles, before moving forward.
The pair will move forward to investigate the holes in the room. Knuckles will stop at the pit in the south, and Einstein will go to the north one.
They both get on hands-and-knees and see what they can see below. Especially, is the light from the one hole visible from the other?
Luke Garner and Arnie Wilson
Luke and Arnie will tap on the walls around them, looking for signs that the walls have hidden doors in them. They encourage the folks in the back to join them in knocking on walls and looking for secret doors.

Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
Arya Moves toward the door, one hand on her dagger. Don't open that yet! she says.
Morris hangs near the back (still in the corridor, near the matched pair of holes). He still holds his holy symbol tightly, but seems to have drawn some courage from his own prayers. He stands taller, looking around with interest.
Derrek Kneels at the edge of the pit in the corner, looking down. There must be treasure somewhere... he mutters, holding a candle out to light up the pit.
Ruby wanders over to the 'exit' corridor. She's in a good position to guard that tunnel, but is looking into the room, watching the others explore. She idly looks around- if there are any sort of markings on the walls of the room, she'll check them out.

Re: CHAPTER 1: Into the Hillside
...
Knuckles, on his hands and knees, peers into the corner hole using the torch to illuminate the void. The jagged hole goes through the floor, which is 2ft thick, and drops into a chamber. This room is natural sandstone and limestone, but has been worked to flatten the floor and shave the walls. The chamber is 10ft wide and continues to the east. A 5ft wide corridor exits the room on the west wall. There are pieces of debris scattered about the floor, and the slight taint of a foul odor rises from below. The chamber is dark, save the flickering light from Knuckles’ torch and Derrek’s candle.
Einstein carefully crawls to the edge of the northern hole. This hole is a 10ft deep pit that is filled with broken floor stones and dozens of rough, 2ft long iron spikes anchored into the floor. Ruby joins Einstein at the north corridor. After looking into the pit, she idly looks around at the masonry walls for any markings of decorations.
Now that most have left the 10ft x 10ft chamber, Luke strikes another torch and searches for secret doors. He and Arnie find some loose cement between the masonry blocks, but nothing that would indicate a hidden portal.
Arya helps Anne examine the door. The door is hinged on the north side and swings out, into the room. There are no visible handles or hinges, so they must be hidden on the back side.
While the two groups explore their respective chambers, LePlank and Loreta see Morris suddenly jump and scream (DMG 2). Buckminster, Terryk and Ralph reactively turn and see a 10in diameter snake sticking out of the south hole, biting into the Beadle’s calf muscle. Blood runs down his ankle and pools onto the floor.

Snake = [1d20+2] = 17+2 = 19 atk., [1d4] = 2 dmg.

Arya hustles toward the screaming beadle. Dart stirs and flaps on her shoulder, then settles himself again.
Morris continues shouting in pain, and grabs at his calf. He look shocked when he sees the blood on his palm, and stumbles away from the hole. The Evil One has attacked me! Help!!
Derrek was in the process of dripping wax onto the floor so he could place the candle in it to stand there and keep burning. He jerks up when Morris screams, splattering wax into the hole below.
Ruby doesn't appear to have heard. She continues her spaced-out version of guarding the group from whatever may be down the next corridor.

Combat Round 2
The black-scaled snake attacks again, before anyone can react. The slithering reptile bites into Loreta (Random target; DMG 4), and she screams in pain as the serpent bites deep into her right leg!
OOC: Loreta must make a Fortitude save (1d20+1) vs. DC 16.
Luke and Knuckles both swing, and miss again; their weapons strike the solid stone floor.
Zeek presses forward and lunges with his pitchfork. The over extension of arms causes him to trip, but he recovers and avoids becoming vulnerably prone on the floor. (Made his save vs. DC 10)
Ralph chops into the snake with his axe (2pt. dmg).
LePlank turns when Morris moans in agony, and he watches him tumble over. White foam drips out of his mouth and his eyes stare ahead, lifeless and glassy. (Fails save vs. DC 16)
