Quest #15 "Taking Down Captain Bing"
Re: Quest #15 "Taking Down Captain Bing"
Luther
After a little while, Luther returns from his assignation. He splashes in the river briefly, then comes back to the breakfast table, grinning all over his face.
Have we decided anything about the Captain and anyone else who escaped?
Since the leader of the tribe seems to know a tiny bit of Common, Luther will start the LONG process of trying to learn the tribe's language.

Re: Quest #15 "Taking Down Captain Bing"
Returning Camp To The Natives
Sunday, The 7th of Goodmonth
Morning, Warm, Misty, Smokey
As the breakfast feast starts to wind down, the hero guests are treated as well as they could be. They are allowed as much of the food and drink as they can consume, and are smiled at and back patted constantly. They are made to feel right at home, despite the obvious language barriers they face. Lightfinger plays around with the shortest of the native girls, one only slightly taller than he. They move off together to find some privacy in one of the only shacks still standing so the thief can ply his trade. See private thread.
Luther returns to the table alone, sweating as if he just ran around the entire huge clearing. He has a pleasant, satisfied look on his face as he quietly finishes up the last of his morning meal. He listens to the natives speaking, hoping to start picking up on their strange language. Monocar talks with the clerics, confusing them a bit more. Talaris speaks to the huge fighter once he tells them about Pholtus never really answering his prayers. "Monocar......have I ever mentioned the great and mighty Pelor to you? He may be a nice alternative for you if you are unsatisfied with your current deity. I had a vision from him just last night, if you remember." The half-elf goes on about the Light of Pelor for as long as anyone listens, and even a little longer still.
Chauncey suddenly rushes over to the burnt shack that he almost entered while in full flames the night before. He digs around in the ashes for a while, but all he gets out of it are a few lightly burned fingers and plenty of soot on his boots and robes. This area has clearly already been searched over by the natives, so he moves over to the last standing drying barn, entering it alone. He stuffs a huge handful of the herbs into a sack and takes another one for his friend Avaala. The natives don't stop him at all, actually encouraging the mage to take more if he'd like. There is clearly enough of the smelly plant for everyone here and more. See private thread.
The chief makes a long speech followed by much cheering and chest pounding from the natives. They eventually start gathering bamboo and thatch from the jungle to start reconstructing their ruined buildings. They point out the cave again, indicating that it is yours to use however you see fit. The warriors start to go through the collected weapons, spreading them out on the ground in piles for the chiefs inspection. A few of the nicer looking blades are set aside in their own area. They look at each of you and point to the spoils, though you still aren't really sure what they are trying to say.
Though the natives don't seem upset about any of you being around, the party starts to discuss immediate plans for the rest of this day. Will they be staying here longer to rest up and heal, or will they decide to press on back to Beachtown?

Lerrick is apprehensive about any move towards confronting Captain Bing and his crew without the party being a full strength. Can't we waiting another night. I can provide more healing in the morning if I'm able have some time to myself to pray.

Re: Quest #15 "Taking Down Captain Bing"
Alordan feeling immensely better offers "Heading back to town the way of the river trail makes sense to me. We head back to town and can get an idea of what the smugglers may be up to. On the way we should plan a watch system with some signal fires maybe and prepare a welcome party for any return. It would benefit the island to be ready and waiting - with force."
Once back to town, we can explain what we have found and perhaps offer suggestions on how the townspeople can benefit by getting invovled and expanding to this area? You are right that this land seems fertile - but i'm not a farmer and don't know what else could grow here. Perhaps the natives know? I think there are some farmers at the beach trying to scrape by, this seems much better. Would one of our new friends like to join us to meet with the town?"

It looks like we're being invited to take a share of the spoils. Monocar, maybe you can find something to help replace your armor.
Luther walks over to the unclaimed weapons and collects a decent-looking dagger.

The big guy walks over where Luthar is examining the weapons and goods to see what is there. I know the natives here need this stuff as much as we do. They don't seem to have much in the way of metal.... well.... anything... But do you think there is enough we can take some of this back to town and slip it to some of the more level headed folks there? I mean... just in case? Maybe we can make a cache and make sure a few people we trust know where it is in case Bing and his pirates come back. Or do we just leave it all here for them? I mean... these people have been through hell and if anyone has earned a little steel it is them.

Chauncey wanders over to where the others are examining the items while stuffing several large handfuls of the mysterious weed into his pack. "If we're not setting off immediately, Monocar, you had best give me that sword now to identify for you," he says. "Anyway, I am still feeling a bit out of sorts from the great battle and could stand to heal up a bit before any serious travel. So unless there is healing forthcoming from the healing types, I'll need additional rest." He holds out his hand for the sword. Looking at Luther he says "Are you feeling quite all right, sir? You look a bit flushed," and peers intently into the man's eyes.
If given Monocar's weapon, he will retire to the cave for some private spell casting time.

Luther
Luther grins at Chauncey. Don't worry about me- I'm great.
Luther takes a leaf from one of the plants in the drying shed. He chews it for about 5 seconds, then spits it out and rinses his mouth with water. He then waits a bit to see what effect- if any- the plant has. This is part of a system Ranger Jax taught him for determining if an unknown plant is edible.
Chauncey- did you dig under the wizard's hut? Maybe he buried some valuables, like I did.

Returning Camp To The Natives
Sunday, The 7th of Goodmonth
Morning, Warm, Misty, Smokey
The smiling native who introduced himself as Keilif's friend follows you around as you make your way throughout the camp. He tries to be helpful with the language barrier.
Looking over the spoils pile, Luther sees that the items they are putting aside is obviously the good stuff. The native smiles again, points to the ranger, and hold up one finger. Then he points at the pile again. Luther walks over to the pile and picks up a shiny dagger from the ground. Though it is covered in soot, the warrior can tell that this blade is special. Its weight is perfectly balanced and it feels very good in his meaty hand. The native bows at Luther, smiling wide. "Tank ooo" is all he says as he ushers the burly man away so the others can take a look. It becomes apparent that you will each be rewarded one selection of your choice from the pile for all your help here.
Lerrick and Chauncey seem willing to spend another day here, to rest and take advantage of more healing tomorrow. The natives seem very willing to let you use the cave for as long as you like. Alordan suggests taking the river trail back to town when they leave, to get a better idea of how many of Bing's smugglers remain nearby. The ranger reminds the others of the starving folks at Beachtown as he points out how amazingly fertile the farmland in this clearing looks. He suggests bringing a native ambassador along when they leave.
Lerrick and Monocar go through the spoils next. When the huge fighter suggests taking some of the stuff back to town, the smiling native shakes his head. He holds up one finger and says, "un" The cleric doesn't find anything she can use as a weapon, but there are a few other items lying around as well. She spots what looks like a metal scroll tube, a clean potion bottle with a clear liquid inside, a pair of soot covered bracers, a few gems, and a small pile of metal coins partially fused together. There is also a fine looking spear head with a badly burnt shaft, a short sword, a long sword and a metal javelin left in the pile.
Chauncey suggests that Monocar give him the broadsword he found so he can try to determine its magical properties. He looks at the pile of goodies as well, before suggesting that he go off to use the cave for his research. Luther takes some of the leaf that the natives are constantly smoking and chews on it for a few seconds. He isn't able to determine any effect from the plant by chewing it.
The natives continue cleaning and rebuilding, while some of them return to the fields to harvest more of their abundant supply of fruits and vegetables. The warrior types have gone through the normal weapons and are currently practicing with them awkwardly in one large group. One native ties a burnt dagger to the end of a straight shaft of strong wood. He parades around with it, stabbing it into the air to the cheers of the others.
Actions?
Go ahead and pick one item from the list if you'd like. Feel free to trade items if it suits you. Let me know if there is anything else you want to do here, or if you just plan on resting away the day.

Before heading to the cave to cast his spells, Chauncey will pause, pick up the scroll tube and open it. “Ahh, Lerrik. Let us see what is inside. Probably just a map or a directive from Captain Bing. If it proves to be some indecipherable metaphysical pamphlet or some religious incantation I will hand it over directly into your expert care,” he says, unscrewing the top.
Over his shoulder he replies to Luther. “I rooted around thoroughly, but did no digging, per se. Perhaps it will prove useful to do so after my casting,” he says.

The big man looks over the weapons with a critical eye. He grins a little seeing the spearhead. He knew he could make a shaft for that, so he picks it up and wipes the soot away, looking it over closely. Assuming it is in good condition, he will go to the side and polish it before sticking it into his pack.
If nothing else goes on today, he will spend a little time seeing if he can help the natives but cutting down trees with his ax or helping haul things back and forth. He will still be careful not to overdo it and get plenty of food and rest so he will heal up for tomorrow.

Alordan asks if the long sword or dagger are available. He'd be happy with either if they seem to be particularly noteworthy.
While he appreciates the rest for another day, he's getting anxious about the smugglers...

Luther is fine staying here for the day. Maybe Plain Jane is still around... Heh
When he sees the natives with their weapons, he joins them. Working by example and pantomime, he tries to help them learn to use the weapons more effectively.

Lerrick looks at the vile of clear liquid and the bracers. She chooses the bracers. Perhaps these will help keep me alive. I'm no good to a party if I'm dead. She laughs at her own joke. She then moves towards the magic user to see about the scroll.

Sharing The Camp With The Natives?
Sunday, The 7th of Goodmonth
Morning, Warm, Misty, Smokey
Chauncey picks up the metal scroll tube from the pile and opens it without a thought. He babbles a bit about what he hopes it isn’t, and is pleased to find 3 intact vellum pages inside filled with arcane writings and sigils.
Lerrick chooses the bracers over the potion when Monocar grabs up the spear head, sure he can fashion a quality handle of his own making. Alordan takes the long sword, finding it perfectly balanced and made of the highest quality steel. Talaris is happy to take the potion over any blade or monetary treasure left. The smiling native continues to bow and personally thank each member of the group.
Luther takes his fancy dagger and moves off to help train the warriors with their newfound weapons. They welcome and absorb everything they can learn, accepting the nonverbal teachings offered them with great enthusiasm. Monocar pulls his weight and more, working hard to help the natives rebuild their camp. Both he and Luther are accepted even more warmly by the natives for helping where they can.
As Chauncey is about to retire to the cave and his magic, the door of the shack Lightfinger was in suddenly flies open and the native girl rushes outside. She holds her hand over her mouth and circles around madly, trying to find her chief. The warrior types and many others begin to laugh loudly and point at the poor girl, obviously finding the whole thing rather humorous.
Lightfinger stumbles out behind her, hopping around on one leg as if the other has been injured. 2 dam He is grabbing at something near his crotch, causing the native warriors to laugh even harder. He shouts for his friends. Clancey! Licorice! Tailoris! I need help, oh, I badly need help! I believe I may have made an accidental but ever-so-greivous error! And offended the Mother of my future children in the process! I fear my loose tongue may destroy all we have accomplished here!
The native girl sees the chief near the river and starts running towards him. The commotion is causing quite a stir in the camp so far.

Alordan, seeing Lightfinger emerge as he does, simultaneous shakes his head, scowls, and raises his hands in the universal symbol for 'WTF'.
He cleans the soot and grime from his new sword and admires in craftsmanship in appreciation. No longer needing two swords, practically speaking, he joins the group of natives learning sword play and joins them. He'll give his old sword to one of the natives that shows ability in using it. The exercise will do him good, as well.
