It seems once again the dead do not rest easy. Itr is good we have come to cleanse this place and bring the light of Baudh. We should all stay alert."

Hengist readies his mace and shield.

Winnie notes Bandy's observations. The dead walk, friend. I should think it goes without saying that there is an imbalance here. I will help as much as I can to put things back in balance, I assure you. She continues her search for valuables not currently being used by living creatures.

"Architecturally speaking, Winnie. I mean if you see something like four pairs of niches with statuary in them and then suddenly there is a lone niche with nothing inside... might want to search that area more closely." Bandy explains patiently.

Ohhh. I see what you mean. Sorry. She blushes an attractive shade of red. Well is seems that one of these alcoves is further to the right, with the other four farther to the left. Did you mean something like that? Maybe there is something hidden in this bit of wall? Winnie pokes her staff at the wall, then taps it with the pommel of her silver dagger. If/when nothing happens, she shrugs and returns to the set of four alcoves, clearing away cobwebs and dust with her staff and dagger.

Marullus, I'm having trouble figuring out how to map what you described. What do you mean by an "alcove?" Is it a 10x10 space with an opening at one end? With two rows of niches on each side, one above the other, is that a total of 8 niches (2 up left, 2 down left, 2 up right, 2 down right)? Is each alcove 10x10, with 10' between alcoves? And do you mean that each alcove has more niches at the end, not another alcove?

If I understand correctly, I think the map should look like this:
C498DCB7-0C45-4112-B9D7-FC03DD3939DA.jpeg
C498DCB7-0C45-4112-B9D7-FC03DD3939DA.jpeg (39.97 KiB) Viewed 447 times
Is that about right?

The alcoves are 20' deep, otherwise you're mostly correct. There are alcoves on the end of each except for the 5th one, through which you emerged. To be fair, though, you came here because you have the map/blueprints from when the tomb was constructed. It is only fair that you see a map rather than having to interpret my descriptions in this case.

** The big double-door tomb on the right side is the one built with secret doors and where you hope to find the giant golden statue.

Thanks.

That's...a lot of statues. What are the odds that all of them are completely inert and won't attack us?

Oh, right. Action:

Fingers checks the door for traps, just to be safe. Assuming he finds none on the non-secret side of a secret door, he stands back for someone to open it.

We're in the "northeast" corner of that map, correct? Standing to the right of that not-so-secret door?
Winnie looks at the map and agrees that there are a lot of statues in there. She hopes they don't represent gargoyles. Or anything like gargoyles. She bites her fingernails nervously, standing back form the door.

All of the alcoves are checked: the bodies here are unnamed and have no grave goods. They are dressed in plain white burial shifts now stained by decay and have no other adornments. Of the 58 alcoves, 26 still have bodies in them and four appear to be formerly occupied. Those still interred appear to still be at rest.

Bandy and Winnie poke about for secret doors, but find nothing further in their search.

Fingers examines the door, satisfying himself that there are no traps upon it. It also has no lock.

Markd opens the door, swinging it open and shining Winnie's light into the tomb beyond. A pair of ornate stone coffins rest in the center of the chamber, lids closed. In each of the alcoves of the room, the party does not see the expected statues. Instead, they see additional coffins, each one with the lid broken or ajar. There is an angry hiss from Markd's left - five sallow-fleshed wights crouch, ready to attack the interloper who stands in the doorway!

Eek! squeaks Winnie, quickly covering her own mouth. Thinking quickly, she adds, If someone tosses oil into a corner and Heingst herds them onto it, I can light it from a distance and burn them all. She starts reaching for a flask of oil in case someone offers.

Interesting idea. I think Heingist will turn at least some of them automatically. Lighting oil where the wights stand will probably (1) break the turn and (2) not kill them in one round. So. Do we want flaming wights coming at us?

I don't actually have a better idea, though.

OOC: If Heingist can turn them to a corner, we can loot what we can while they're unable to approach and then close the door as we leave.

Also, I suspect there will be wights... or worse... in most of these tombs.

Yay.

Hengist steps forward, "By the power of Holy Baudh be gone!" If directionality is possible in turning the undead he will attempt to direct them to a far corner of the room. If not, simply driving them back will suffice. And I expect there will be lots of undead to smite, not that that is a request or anything. ;)

If any of the ghouls approach the group, Winnie sing the incatation to release a bolt of energy at a ghoul.

if needed: Magic Missile [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

EDIT: Marullus, would you please edit the map image into your initial post of this thread? I fear it will get buried otherwise. Thanks much!
