Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
In Search Of Dragons!
Sunday, 7th of Goodmonth
Early Morning, Hazy, Humid, Buggy
Wes gets the others from his group up and moving as soon as he sees first light, ready to conquer another day here on Big Shiny Island. After learning about the possibility of a dragon nearby from Mr. Nehru, he agrees that it might be worth investigation. Since that task will bring them closer to Chauncey and his group, he will be killing two birds with one stone, with Wes being interested to learn the fate of his friends on their dangerous mission as well.
After a quick breakfast, the party of 5 is ready to head out into the wild, down the beach, towards the river. Stump and Ren are there, as are Galanthas and Greff, all 4 of them ready to take on another adventure. Ren continues to do all of the talking for that pair, Stumpy just chews and nods yes or no periodically.
As they set out, Wes notices something strange. Every single day that he has been in town so far, he has witnessed Marge and her group of water gatherers gearing up for their long walk to the river each morning. But on this day, she isn't anywhere to be seen, and neither is her train of hard working females. The druid assumes that, for the first time, the town must have enough of a water surplus that the ladies can actually have a day off.
This makes the half-elf feel pretty good about himself.
Actions?
Wes 24/24 4/4 first 3/4 second 2/2 third
Greff 13/13
Galanthas 8/8 1/1 first
Any last minute arrangements or needs can be taken care of now, before you depart for the river.

Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Wes whips up another batch of his bug repellent and doles it out to the group. Then he makes sure he has topped up his waterskins.
"I think we can stay on the hardback sand trail safely enough". he prognosticates. "It will give us time to see anything attacking us from the jungle, like that lizard the other evening, but keep us close enough to the trees to take cover from anything dangerous in the air". Having seen Pterry several times at a distance now, Wes has no interest in seeing him up close.
"We should rotate our order every so often as we walk. Keep a fresh pair of eyes at the back. We don't want Pterry to surprise us." Or that dragon, he thinks to himself.

Greff makes sure to see that he's also topped off with water before he applies Wes' famous bug repellant.
"A sound enough play I'd say, would you like me up front keeping an eye out for tracks?" he takes a moment to survey the sky. "I doubt we'd find dragon tracks but maybe we'll know if there's anything else in the area to be wary of."

Galanthas also refills his waterskins before the party leaves. "I can watch on the rear of you want until we change turns." Hearing about Pterry he asks in low voice "Who's this Pterry you're talking about?

In Search Of Dragons!
Sunday, 7th of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Hazy, Humid, Buggy
The group starts off their beach walk with a solid plan, switching up positions periodically and keeping a sharp eye out towards the jungle, sky, and waterline at all times. The trail up the beach is hard packed and easy to walk on, it appears just wide enough for a small cart to pass along its length. They smear some of Wes's homemade bug salve on themselves as they walk, though the bugs seem to be developing a taste for the smelly paste, as they bite and sting relentlessly anyway, as usual.
Wes points out a few places along the way where he remembers having encounters. The makeshift troll trap still lays inside the tree line, just off the beach. He tells the tale of old Scraggly to the others as they walk past that area. Stumpy doesn't look like he believes the story, but he doesn't try to dispute the idea that a huge sea troll could be caught with a simple fishing net.
At about the half way point between the river and the town, a loud screech is heard over the tops of the trees that rings out over the normal cacophony of sound coming from the dark jungle. The party members freeze in their tracks from the noise as Galanthas asks quietly just who exactly this Pterry is that Wes keeps talking about.

When the screech rings out the ranger will lower his stance and start to look around for anything trying to charge the group.
"Any of you see anything, what do think that was?"

Galanthas gets bow an arrow ready and looks around: "I don't see anything..."
Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
Wes
Wes explains that Pterry is a very large flying beast, a cross between a lizard and a bird. "In fact, that could be him above right now. I think we should retreat into the trees for a moment, just in case".
Wes falls back towards the trees. As he does so, he takes a few moments to look up into the trees, just in case the noise is coming from something hiding up there, rather than in the sky above.

Greff will follow Wes' lead into the trees. "You've had many run ins with Pterry before?" He asks keeping his voice low.
Re: Quest #18 "The Search For Dragons!"
"He shows up every once in a while. I don't know if he's ever attacked anybody, but he's big enough to". Wes thinks for a few moments. "He's an obvious threat. Maybe we can rig a trap for him one day, lure him in and fill him full of arrows."
Wes looks back down the beach towards the spot they'd passed earlier where the troll had been defeated. The idea of a trap begins to take shape. "The folks who killed the troll caught him in a net. A net trap might be even more effective on Pterry. He'd be much less of a threat tangled up on the ground. Easier to finish off".

In Search Of Dragons!
Sunday, 7th of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Hot, Sunny, Humid, Buggy
Heading into the treeline seems to be an effective defense. The screeching is heard 2 more times, and no more. If the noise was being made by the flying lizard affectionately known as Pterry, the beast never shows itself.
The group discusses a few ways to take the dangerous monster out while they finish their trip down the beach. Arriving a few hours later at the mouth of the river, the group doesn’t hear any more strange noises along the rest of their journey.
The mouth of the river appears clear, no men or beasts seem to be around the area as the party approaches. Wes can see the river trail that leads north into the jungle. He also spots the area where he crossed over to the opposite bank a few days earlier.

Wes
The druid stands for a while, trying to recall what Mr Nehru told him about the dragon. "Mr Nehru said he was walking along the river trail when he saw the creature. It flew downriver above the trees, down to the sea, turned around and flew back. I've been up the trail as far as the pirate camp. It's a two day trip and we didn't see any sign of a dragon."
Wes points across the river. "I've also been over there, briefly, with Gwen. There was little sign of animal life. It looked like the natives had left some sort of warning or offering in the trees behind the beach. There was a single line of footprints leading away along the beach, and signs that the pirates had been walking along the riverbank. We also saw a cave in the cliffs, with something shiny in the rocks above it."
He looks at the group. "The lack of animals over there gives me the creeps. What do they know that we don't? But it seems more likely that we'll find something over there. Do you agree?"

Galanthas
After knowing about Pterry, the flying beast, Galanthas doesn't doing any longer that that's not the crawling beast they're looking for. Almost talking to himself, he says "There's so much about this page I have to know... Best to avoid those pirates for the time being." then, turning to Wes "I think scouting that area that the animals avoid is our best bet. Then to Greff "Do you think you can find any tracks here in the thicket?"

The Ranger peers accross the river shielding his eyes from the sun. "If the animals know better than to tread there, that'll probably be our best bet." Turning to Galanthas "Perhaps, I'll see what I can find." He proceeds to look for signs that anyone or any thing has been through this area.

Greff could see with his eyes closed that there has been a lot of action in the sand where the river meets the sea. There are bootprints and drag marks everywhere, and in every direction. Something big has happened here lately.
Wes looks across the river and sees that nothing has changed there. The one set of boot prints that leads towards the cave are still there, though they are harder to see now. There isn’t another track anywhere else on that side of the river.

Wes
Wes suggests that they cross the river in the same manner that he and Gwen did. He drops his pack, ties a rope around his waist, asks the others to hold it, and wades across the river. Once there, he ties the rope to a tree and waves to the others to come across. Before the last person crosses, he calls to them to tie his pack securely to the rope and once the party is again all on the same side, pulls his pack across to himself.

Galanthas agrees and does exactly as instructed. After crossing the river he helps those that might come after him, gets his bow and an arrow again just to be ready and takes a look around just in case before the group continues on the direction Wes points to.

Greff will offer to cross last following Wes' instructions.

Crossing the river takes some time, but no complications occur during the ford. Once across, the hunters see that the human tracks in the sand leading off towards the cave are nearly gone, indicating that they haven't been used in a long while now. No other tracks can be found, human or animal.
The lush green jungle creeps up to the sandy beach on this side of the river. Wes remembers that they found offerings hanging in the trees the closer they got to the cave in the black cliffs. No action is seen anywhere near that cave, but you can still see bright colors waving in the wind near the opening and something glints at you in the sunlight just above its mouth.
The black cliffs stretch out along the coast as far as your eyes can see. There are a few other dark areas in the cliff face that might be openings around the cave, but they are much smaller in size than the cave mouth you can see. Ren looks to the groups leader with a stern expression.
"Did you say you had a look in that cave last time you were here? Now, I aint no genius, but those bright colors and shiny reflection seem to be almost calling out for someone to take a closer look."

"No, we never looked in there", Wes answers. "There were only two of us, it does seem a bit too obvious, kind of like a lure, and the fact that there's very little animal life around here made me think that maybe there was something undead in there".
"There's certainly something in there. As I said to Gwen, there isn't a hole in the ground in the whole world that doesn't have something living in it".
He considers the cave for a moment. "I still think that whatever is up there is probably the reason there's no animals around here. And druids really aren't experts in caving. But we're pretty short on clues to where this dragon might be. It might be as good as any place to start looking."
