Alordan suggests "Plowing onto the trail now or at night is foolish. I think we should think about shelter now, while we have some time. We can build a bush shelter for tonight to protect us from the worst of the bugs - and smuggler patrols. Better to make time to prepare now, then be forced to make time to fight."

”Indeed, yes, Alordan. Astute thinking. Let us do this then: we shall travel north through the dense foliage, deftly springing from cover to cover like pumas, or lemurs. Before reaching the main farm clearing, and before darkness falls, we shall pause in our travel and build an enclosed lean-to or yurt, or perhaps a bunker? Whatever sort of shelter the ranger types think best,” says Chauncey. ”Something with shelving would be nice. A small patio? At any rate, a barrier in the dense jungle, behind which we can build a small fire, unseen by prying eyes. From there we shall sally forth to spy upon the camp at night and perhaps find a solitary guard to “befriend” with magic. Then, indeed, we may simply ask for the information we require.”

”Indeed. I shall require precisely your expertise of such out-of-door matters to place our structure just far enough away to avoid detection, yet close enough to have relatively easy access to the camp,”Chauncey replies. ”Unless you have a plan of your own to propose? Though I’m not sure how my considered and well-nigh infallible plan could be improved...” He seems genuinely unable to imagine this.

Also, I will need to know how close you want to get to the main clearing before attempting to build a structure.

It is 2-3 hours through the jungle to the clearing from your current position. 4 hours of daylight remain.

The longer you spend on the shelter, the better it will work. Just keep in mind that there are also lots of creepy crawlies around as well.

Two hours in and use the rest to make a structure? Maybe we can keep working a little from the inside once the sun is down too? Seems like 2 hours out would be far ebough we wouldnt have to worry about a fire being smelled.

Luther nods to Alordan. It's been too long since I had to plan against a smart enemy, I guess. You have a better plan already than anything I could think of.

Two hours trekking is a lot less distance than you might think, Monocar. And if the wind shifts, it would be as bad as if we were shouting our location. Smoke lingers, and sound carries, even in this kind of thicket. I strongly advise that we keep a cold camp- and a silent one- for the night.

Lightfinger considers.
you think you could pull off some extra sneaky sneakilage
Monocle, my young friend, that is a brilliant idea, The tall Halfling grins, I believe close proximity with those more cerebral than your fine self may be contagious! Someone should do a study... At any rate, I do indeed believe I would be capable enough to... "Sally Forth," as suggested, and infiltrate any captive hold. I must say, tho, such activity would be most advantageous after dark. Shadows and all, you understand. Also, in the event of a failure on my part, however unlikely, a plan of contingency may prove useful.

Smiles wide and nods as he listens then looks over at Luthar in a hushed whisper that could be heard back on the mainland. Sally who?

Luther can't help but smile when Monocar asks his question. Never met her. Sorry.

Emancipation
Final Decisions
Freeday, The 5th of Goodmonth
Early Evening, Warm, Humid, Extremely Buggy

The group decides to push on a bit further towards their destination before setting up a bush shelter. After a short distance, Luther sees a print in the mud at his feet, and then another. Looking closer, he sees that they are light boot tracks about human size. Following them for a another few hundred yards, he spots a small area ahead on fairly flat ground that has already been partially cleared out. A small lean-to has been erected with the natural jungle materials found all around it.

You get the feeling that, whoever stayed out here in this horrible place, picked this very spot for a reason.

Actions?

You are still a long trudge away from the main camp, but neither ranger thinks they will find a better, flatter place to set up a camp. 3.5 hours of daylight remain.

"Well, are we close enough? Who's campsite is this? Is it currently being used?" says Chauncey impatiently. "Agenda for this evening: scout and charm, scout and charm. Let's get cracking, shall we?"

Monocar

Looks at the spot curiously and then around side to side. I saw this in a game of dragonchess once... He reaches up and puts his finger on his head and slowly steps out into the clearing looking around.

Alordan is suspicious of the location but acknowledges they won't find any better. Before anyone heads out, he'll set up some trip wires at likely places of entry and let everyone know where they are.

Luther

Any guess on how old the tracks are?

Luther watches Monocle's antics for a few seconds, then shrugs. Remember, folks- quiet and cold. He begins clearing brush to expand the campsite, alternating between making shelters with the debris and building a 'wall' of shrubbery around the area.

Lightfinger, keep an eye out for a tall tree near the smuggler's clearing. I'm thinking a sniper might be useful.

By the rangers best estimation, the tracks appear to be about 3 or 4 days old or so.

There are no clues left behind at the lean-to site. In fact, it almost appears that whoever made this, tried to hide the fact that it was here, going so far as dismantling most of it before they left this area, scattering the material used for the walls around on the ground.

The tracks lead from the main clearing, or a little to its west, and head towards the river trail where you just came from.

Monocar... once he is sure it is safe, takes his finger off the top of his Helmet. Okay, we're good.

Listens to Luthar and then perks up looking at Lightfigner. Don't let him fool you! My uncle sent me on a snipe hunt once too... Took 3 weeks and it turned out to be joke...

He throws his arms up in exasperation. No one listens...
