Earc studies the eldritch symbols he can clearly see to figure out if he is able to decipher any of them.

He cautions the others to be careful as they enter the room,"I'll prepare a magical detection spell and we can come back here to see if anything in this mess is of value. In the mean time, dig at your own risk. Who knows what might be living in this pile of corpses..."

Earc leads the group back to the room with the battle's remains. Florian and Steve lead in the pony and mule, who shie a bit, but are willing to enter given the age and non-smelliness of the remains. Decomposition has long ago done its job.

Earc examines the walls, ceiling, and what he can see of the floor.
The walls and ceiling are wards for containment, particularly of extraplanar and summoned beings. The floor is a supremely advanced summoning circle, well above your level and understanding, to open portals to other realms.
"Hey!" shouts Funil, as Drunil adds some curses in goblin. The dwarves are back near the entrance and call your attention to a band of seven goblins trying to shove the stone door closed behind you.

Olaf rushes forward for some goblin bashin'.

The Dragon Sword +3 (THAC0 16): [1d20+4] = 7+4 = 11 [1d8+4] = 8+4 = 12
Initiative: [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
That's just a 4. I have no idea why I have Olaf's dexterity bonus in the initiative macro.

Earc quickly fires off three successive magic missiles at the goblins he can see...

Magic Missile Damage [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6 [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7 [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7
wow. Nice.

Light hammer (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9 [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5

Hereward grasps his hammer and aims a stroke at the nearest goblin.

The goblin's failure to surprise your keen-eyed dwarves was a fatal mistake. Funil and Drunil rush the stone door, slamming it open before the goblins can seal the lock. Steve's crossbow bolt clatters on the far wall, but Earc's magical blast of energy flattens three of the goblins holding the door's edge. The dwarves' axes slay the two goblins closest to them while the swords of Olaf and Halfpint take out the last two goblins before they can flee to the far door. It is a brief moment of chaos, but all the goblins are slain before they can muster any effective defense. Their bodies lie in the ransacked study/office on the other side of the door, the stone door still open between the chambers. Funil and Drunil search the goblins, finding nothing worth taking except 54 electrum pieces with a closed fist sigil.

"Ought better figure where them gobs come from," suggests Olaf. "Wasn't the garbage room," in case anyone needed explaining that the goblins didn't come from the room the party was in.

Just to help clarify. You left the garbage room and came to the room with the corpses. The goblins came behind you and tried to seal you in (with the stone door that Olaf has the key for). It is possible they came from the garbage room or from the altar/laboratory direction.

I could edit, but Olaf isn't that bright. Maybe he just misspoke. ;)

"No, they might very well have come from the garbage room, actually..." Earc replies.

"Let's dispose of these bodies in the furnace before they rot. That will also hide the fact that they're actually dead in case they are missed..." Earc implores all party members to help with this in order to make it go quickly.

Before they re-enter the battle room, Earc has Olaf check to make sure they can open the locking metal door from the other side with the key they picked up from the runt goblin.

Olaf dutifully checks that he can lock and unlock the door.

Just to clarify... these things are practically mummified. You suspect they've been here several centuries. You can still haul and burn them, though.
This room is choked with desiccated, papery, old corpses. The bodies of orcs and ogres lie in tangled heaps where they died, and the floor is sticky with dried blood.
Florian and Steve lead in the pony and mule, who shie a bit, but are willing to enter given the age and non-smelliness of the remains. Decomposition has long ago done its job.
Olaf checks and confirms that the key does in fact work from both sides of the heavy stone door.

I thought Earc meant the bodies of the gobs we just killed.

Funil, Drunil and Olaf set up a guard while Florian, Steve, and the others again haul bodies towards the furnace. They are stumped by the locked door in the chapel for a while, but finally swap out to allow Olaf to pray at the altar once more for Moradin to unlock the door, which then clicks open. No more goblins appear before the deed is complete and the party once more stands at the stone metal door, looking at the dessicated remains of a battle, streen on the floor.

Earc examines the metal door to the battle room to see if it can be opened from the other side, in case someone tries to lock them in again...
