IC II

#1 Post by thirdkingdom »

Thaumont 10, AC 1000

The first day of the festival finely arrives under cloudy skies, though the word on the street is that rain is not likely. The adventurers rise early, and head out of the gates to the public green along with a throng of townspeople. Although it is early, the fairground is teeming with activity. The entrance to the ground is lined with a number of tents, each erected and run by a local tavern or alehouse. Meat is sizzling on spits, cooks labor behind gigantic metal stoves that have been dragged out for just this occasion, the monstrosities fed by sweating kitchen help no more than a dozen or so years old. Each tavern is using the day as an occasion to premier the ales or whiskeys that have been aging in cellars all winter.

Past the main entrance are more exotic food stalls. A wizened Ylari man and his four daughters advertise their spicy goat on a stick in accented Thyatian. One low tent is run exclusively by dwarves, it seems, and is selling ale purported to be straight from Rockhome itself, a taste of the legendary dwarven homeland. It is doing brisk trade already, filled to near bursting with local dwarves. Several stalls advertise traditional Traladaran fare; roasted potatoes and turnips, a bright red beet soup ladled into a crust of hollowed out bread, flat pancakes made from potato flour.

At the far southern end of the fairground is a large open area surrounded on three sides by bales of hay piled taller than a man. A brace of gnomes stand on the open end, holding strange looking sticks out to show a bemused crowd. One raises the stick to his shoulder, sights down it a moment and there is a horrendous roar followed by a plume of acrid smoke. The gnome is knocked back several feet, and a bottle that had been placed on a bale of hay some fifty feet away from him explodes in a shower of green glass. The gnome raises the stick above his head triumphantly while the bulk of the onlookers back away slowly, a few surreptiously making the finger sign that wards away the evil eye.

Just a few paces away from the gnomes is a brightly colored covered wagon. A pert young Traladaran girl stands before the wagon, exhorting passersby to come and "have your fortune told by Madame Esmerelda, seer and oracle to the Duke! Just one gold coin a person! Let Madame gaze into your heart and unlock the secrets of your future! No refunds!" The young girl gestures in the direction of an ancient crone seated upon the bottom step leading up into the wagon, dressed in bright rags and scarves.

Next to Madame Esmerelda's is a tent enclosed on three sides. Inside the tent one can see the walls are hung with a profusion of maps. A bespectacled Thyatian man waves interested bystanders inside. "I have maps! Cartographic wonders of both near and abroad! Discover Threshold's place in the Duchy, or explore with your finger the rough outlines of the Savage Coast! My maps are without number and without measure! I have a map detailing a secret route into the treasury of the far-off city of Gim! Uncover the secrets of the Isle of Dread, or the land of the vulture people!"
I am going to go ahead and post all of the shopping/plot hook stuff tonight, most likely spaced out over a number of posts to make it easier for everyone to digest what is available.
1d20=18, 1d20=9, 1d20=6. Cloudy, no precipitation.

Thordin the dwarf is very interested in the dwarven ale, and chatting with all the dwarves. That and the maps will take up all of his time. He is not interested in the games.

Tratiln is intrigued by the fortune teller and will glady pay 1 gold for it. After that, he will browse the selection of maps available for purchase.

Madame Esmeralda

"Bah!", the old crone exclaims as Tratiln approaches, lifting her head so that the elf can see the old woman is blind, sniffing the air like a hound. Unlike Zoltar, who had the white rheumy eyes of one struck with cataracts, the old woman simply has no eyes. Her sockets stare cavernously at Tratiln. "'Tis not your coin I want, laddie! That's just the song and dance we give the rubes, take their coins and look into their palms for a moment, tell them about the tall dark stranger they will meet. No! I can smell you, laddie, and you reek of charnel fields and fire and death, the lot of you. From you, my son, I want a different sort of payment!" She pulls back her brocaded vest to reveal a bandolier slung with nine silverish flasks -- pewter, by the looks. "A pint of your blood in one of these, and your deepest desire whispered in my ear and your fortune I will tell, honest and true."
We will treat the pint of blood as a loss of 1 hp, if you desire to go ahead with it.

Tratiln take a moment to think about Madame Esmeralda's offer. "Hm, you drive quite a hard bargin but you have intrigued me. I will accept your offer."

Tratiln will then draw blood however she wants (does she have the knife? use my own?) and then lean in and whisper to her.

Situated on a large blanket laid in roughly the center of the fairground is a couple -- man and woman -- of bronze skin, deerskin leggings and feathers in their hair. Spread on the blanket are all manner of strange devices. A man is overheard telling his friend, "Those bastards bring stuff back from the Broken Lands, they do, from the ruins of the Old Olnes that were here before the elves. Crazy fuckers, I wouldn't do that for the Duke's daughters, I wouldn't!" There are strange wheels of metal with hundreds of square teeth evenly spaced along the rim, and nary a hammer mark to be seen. Several wands the length of a man's forearm, with a single stud on one end. Weapons, someone else says, weapons from a long ago day that shot beams of light that cooked what it hit. No longer working, her friend replies, thank the Immortals. A box the size of an anvil, all smooth and grey, hard like metal, but warm to the touch. A few decayed tubes snake from it like guts spilled at the slaughter.

The bronze-skinned woman beckons the group closer and takes out a leather pouch from her breeches. She upends it, ever so gently, into her palm, spilling forth a pile of dust. On closer inspection, not dust, but thousands of toothed wheels, miniatures of the ones on the blanket, but fine as sand. Bronze and gold and silver and black in color. "Two hundred gold," she whispers, in a heavily accented tongue. "Is strong magic, this is. There is valley in Broken Lands where this covers the ground as sand."

Thordin encounters a tinker, busily mending a pot over a small, hot flame, who tells him of a magic fountain he stumbled across some days north of Threshold. Guarded by a man made of stone, one sip from its waters made a man strong as an ogre. He offers to sell Thordin a map to the place for 75 gold coins.

Six elves have a stall near the archery range, selling bows both long and short. Each are made of several layers of yew, laminated together by arcane means, to increase the range and pull. They have others that are strung with the guts from a displacer beast, or so they claim, and arrows will always fly true when fired from such a bow.
The laminated bows are +1 damage and have their range increments increased by 15/30/45 feet. The ones strung with beast gut have a non-magical +1 to hit.

A dwarf is selling round wooden shields. "Carved from rowan wood," he claims, "harvested by the elves in the forest primeval. 'Tis the best wood for dispelling unwanted enchantments and charms. One hundred gold apiece."

A trio of dwarves has set up a small forge in one corner. They are selling dwarf-made blades and weapons, with edges so keen one could split a hair in twain.

A woman calls out to the companions from the doorway of an enclosed tent. She is fair of skin and has a mane of flame-red hair. The adventurers notice the crowds give her tent a wide berth. She holds in one hand a lantern with hinged doors. "Enchanted with an ever-burning light, my lords, that never needs oil and can, if needed, be shuttered to plunge the world into darkness. Perfect for those . . . clandestine activities." She gives Saul a saucy wink. "And for you, only 250 gold, a special deal."
The shields have an added bonus under the Shields Must be Splintered rule. The rowan wood will vibrate when within 5' of a magical effect. In addition, it may be sacrificed as per the rules to block any spell (well, of 4th level or less) that targets the bearer, regardless if it causes damage or not.

The dwarves are, in effect, selling masterwork weapons that gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls, and cost 75 gold more than the list price for such weapons.

The lantern has a Continual Light spell cast in it.

The largest tent by far is located just to the aft of the food tents. Held aloft by multiple poles, ropes and wires, it houses a dozen or so gnomes and as many tables. Most of the table are piled high with junk, or useless contraptions such as a self-tipping hat or brass suspenders. A careful examination, however, reveals some items of potential value.

A large glass globe sits on one table, connected to a leather backpack by a thick tendril. The gnome behind the table assures the adventurers the globe, if worn over the head, will allow "well, not really the ability to breathe water, but the ability to breathe underwater. 'Cause see here, the backpack has a cartridge in it that has about an hour's worth of air." He demonstrates by placing the globe over his head, where it balances like an oversized ball. The gnome wobbles in place before managing to take it off. "Course, it's sized for one of you big people."

On another table sits a humanoid head, cast in bronze, with hollow eyes and hinged jaw. Once per week, they are told, the head will answer any one question put before it by saying either "yes", "no" or "maybe". The question, the gnome says, must be regarding an imminent event.

On the same table are a pair of thick, bulky goggle with blackened lenses. "If a human puts these on", the gnome says, "he will be able to see in the infra-red spectrum in much the same manner as an elf or dwarf."
The helmet weighs 200 cn and costs 500 gold. The head weighs 300 cn and costs 400 gold. The goggles weigh 20 cn and cost 175 gold. Note that the goggles can only be worn for an hour per day or the wearer will develop massive migraines.

Meagnor the Elf studies for some hours before going to the festivities. He is interested on learning more about the elvish arrows and maybe taste some dwarven ale, depending on the price. Most of all he wants to watch his companions performance in the contests.
The armorer is probably closed, so Meagnor will have to wait until he gets his plate mail, right?

A Glantrian mage with a pointed hat and long beard is selling all manner of arcane tomes, scrolls and esoterica. "Writings on the arcane, the thaumaturgic, the weird and the strange. Books of the forgotten gods, the lost knowledge, the blasphemous secrets of the ancients."

There are a variety of spell scrolls available. Is there anything in particular?

Thordin the dwarf will purchase one of the masterwork swords and one hand ax from the dwarves, one rowan shield, and a short bow with the beast gut string from the elves.

"Fine dwarven steel, are these. I'll take a sword and ax. The armor of my enemies gets thicker with each passing spring."

"Master bowyers, how much would one of these fine bows cost me?"

Also, will pay the 75gp for the map from the Tinker.

One of the elves responds to Thordin's request. "Ah, master dwarf! It is not often that a dwarf appreciates the finer points of bowmanship!"
The bows as well cost 75 gold more than standard price.

Lanny the elf

Lanny walks from booth to booth, actually enjoying the hustle and bustle of activity for a change, secure in the knowledge that there is no task facing the party that cannot wait until tomorrow. Lanny always admired the gnomes for their ingenuity, but he had no real interest in most of the science and technology that they offered. Those bizarre contraptions, while interesting to browse, often had the effect of pulling elves further away from Nature, he believed.

Knowing that the party is preparing for some possible journeys overland, Lanny takes a look around in the map tent. He spots the map of the entire Grand Duchy of Karameikos.

"I should like to have this one if 30 gold pieces is your price. Tell me, do you have similar maps of the surrounding countries as well? Darokin and the lands to the north of Threshold, perhaps?"

Lanny leaves the map tent and greets the dwarves at the forge.

"I could not help but notice the fine blades in your forge... and your shields of rowan wood remind me of my forest home. Where exactly are these 'forests primeval' of which you speak?"

Lanny leaves the dwarves as his eyes and heart are pulled towards the archery range. He stops to speak with the elves selling the longbows.

"I should like to compete in today's archery competition, and your fine craftsmanship would give me an advantage. This laminated longbow you sell will suit me well... A graceful weapon indeed, not as clumsy or random as those gnomish firesticks out there", he says to the elves with a grin and a wink. Lanny welcomes any advice the elves might offer on proper use of the weapon.

If and when Lanny sees Meagnor at the festivities, he will approach him:

"Bregalad helped you with armor, and Tratiln helped you with horse. I would be the stingiest elf among us if I did not offer you help as well. Tis a pity that you have little monies at this time, as these goods only come around once a year. If there is something here that strikes your fancy, let me know and it shall become my welcome gift to you..."
Purchases: map of Karameikos - 30gp, laminated longbow - 115gp, masterwork longsword - 85gp, rowan shield - 100gp (10gp tip is given to any vendor that provides useful information about their item)

Bregalad the elf

Bregalad approaches the trio of dwarves at the forge, noticing their fine weapons. He addresses them in the dwarvish tongue. "Long have I admired the craftsmanship of dwarves. And these weapons are without a doubt superb! Do you also carry spears?"
Bregalad will purchase a sword and spear (if available) from the trio. He will also tip them 10 gold pieces per weapon. I believe that comes to 183 gold pieces.

Bregalad the elf

Bregalad next visits the elves near the archery range, looking around before addressing them in a hushed and somewhat embarrassed tone. "My friends, I am one of the few elves in this world who is not adept at archery. May I purchase one of your long bows that can help my arrows fly true?"
Bregalad will pay the elves 125 gold pieces (including a 10GP tip), leaving with a polite bow and his thanks!

Bregalad the elf

Finally, Bregalad visits the person he desires most to meet, the dwarf selling round wooden shields! "Master dwarf, words do not come close to describing the meaning your shields give me, for they are a creation both dwarvish and elvish!"
Bregalad will pay the dwarf 100 gold pieces for the shield and 15 gold pieces as tip.
The elf will leave the dwarf with his heartfelt thanks, and find Meagnor. "My friend, this day will not end well for me, unless you have also outfitted yourself with wondrous items such as these! Here, take this money, and do not miss this great opportunity!"
Bregalad hands Meagnor 400 gold pieces. I think that makes it 823 gold pieces spent today by Bregalad, not yet including the amount to make a withdrawal.

Ugh. Sorry, Frobozz! I completely missed the last part of your post! I wasn't trying to outdo you or steal your thunder. Again, my apologies.

Meagnor, please feel to take up Lanny's offer. Bregalad would be happy to know that something of yours came from Lanny. As for the gold that Bregalad gave to you, do with it what you wish. However, know that he would not accept the money back, as he would consider that a disgraceful thing for him to do. So, feel free to save it for a rainy day!
