Aubron

Before he had a chance to inspect the ledge, he was set upon by three rats. He says to Kelben, "Rats! Let's kill them fast." Aubron immediately remembers the token in his pocket and the calling of Solonor. He realizes that all things point to his will, and that killing these beasts will please the god of the hunt.

Aubron draws his longbow and lets an arrow fly.

Kelben "I bet the bones are from goblins eating these rats." he openly states preparing to attack and defend himself.

Initiative [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15

Rapier To Hit: [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22, Damage: [1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9

Kelben will focus on Dire Rat #2

Sky

Sky watches Farador climb down the rope, then turns to the dragon. "Looks like that rope could hold you. I'll take the fun way. Coming?"

She walks casually to the edge, flicks her tail and starts her descent. She is half climbing-half sliding down, using the footholds as a safety net.

Initiative Order
  1. Kelben (15)
  2. Giant Rats (15)
  3. Aubron (8)
---
Death Saving Throws
  • Kelben
    • Success: 0
      Failure: 0
---

Round 1: Part 1
Up above, Sky alternates between peering over the edge of the ravine and watching as Farador works to decipher the dwarven runes. "Looks like that rope could hold you," the tabaxi says confidently to the dragonborn, whom earlier expressed concern over its ability to bear his weight.

---

"I bet the bones are from goblins eating these rats," Kelben states as he takes a few careful steps towards the center rat and, with a surprising quickness, lunges forward and drives his rapier through the thick fur of the rodent; it lets loose a brief squeal of pain before falling silent and slipping off the rogue's now bloody blade.

Undeterred, the two remaining rats continue the fight and utilizing pack tactics, move to flank the gnome. The rat nearest the fire pit (#3) circles around the pit, away from Auborn, and attacks Kelben head on, while the rat to Kelben's right takes a direct approach and ends up flanking the rogue. The simultaneous attacks from the pair of rodents prove to be too distracting, and the gnome cringes as he feels one powerful rat jaw clamp down and rip into his flesh (-6). Then another (-6)!

Then darkness as he drifts into a pained, but peaceful state of unconsciousness.

Auborn watches on in horror as his new companion tumbles over, and he realizes he's left to face the pair of hungry rodents alone.

---

Okay, this sucks. Sorry, Ed! Think of it this way, it gives us a chance to gain (very) early exposure to the death saving throw. Here is the section on dropping to 0 hit points (there are no negative hit points in 5e), and here is how the death saving throw works:
Death Saving Throws wrote:"Whenever you start your turn with 0 hit points, you must make a special saving throw, called a death saving throw, to determine whether you creep closer to death or hang onto life. Unlike other saving throws, this one isn't tied to any ability score. You are in the hands of fate now, aided only by spells and features that improve your chances of succeeding on a saving throw.

Roll a d20. If the roll is 10 or higher, you succeed. Otherwise, you fail. A success or failure has no effect by itself. On your third success, you become stable (see below). On your third failure, you die. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until you collect three of a kind. The number of both is reset to zero when you regain any hit points or become stable."
Here are the rules about stabilizing a character:
Stabilizing a Creature wrote:"The best way to save a creature with 0 hit points is to heal it. If healing is unavailable, the creature can at least be stabilized so that it isn't killed by a failed death saving throw.

You can use your action to administer first aid to an unconscious creature and attempt to stabilize it, which requires a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Medicine) check.

A stable creature doesn't make death saving throws, even though it has 0 hit points, but it does remain unconscious. The creature stops being stable, and must start making death saving throws again, if it takes any damage. A stable creature that isn't healed regains 1 hit point after 1d4 hours."
So, for round 2, please make your first death saving throw for Kelben.

Auborn, you're up. Please feel free to modify your actions.

Finally, a few notes on the timing of events:
  • Farador indicated he will study the runes for 1-minute, or 10-rounds. (Start descent after 60-seconds.)
  • Using the 'Climbing, Swimming, and Crawling' rules, the 50-foot descent will be considered 100-feet for purposes of movement.
  • Kelben has a 25-foot speed, so it will take Auborn and Kelben 4 rounds to reach the ridge below. (24 of 60 seconds)
  • Another round for Kelben to examine the fire pit. (30 of 60 seconds)
  • The rats approach. (36 of 60 seconds)
  • Round 1. (42 of 60 seconds)
  • Round 2. (48 of 60 seconds)
  • Round 3. (54 of 60 seconds)
  • Round 4. (60 of 60 seconds)
    ---
  • Given the above, those still on the surface will begin their descent in round 4.
    • Note: I'm willing to adjust this start time if Auborn and/or Kelben were to warn those above them, and Farador cuts his planned rune-reading time short.
  • There's also nothing preventing Sky and/or Klilxuac from climbing down before Farador.
  • Regardless, since everyone on the topside has a 30 speed, I will say they can reach the lower ridge in 3 rounds, and will be able to take their first actions in the fourth round after they start their climb.

I think Farador can lessen his rune-reading time, as these message have the same general gist. Could he cut his time by half, and then descend?

He could realistically read the rune in a single round.

Round 1: Part 2
"Come down quickly! Kelben is down!" Aubron's voice echoes against the ravine walls as he calls out a warning to those still above.

Sky already teetering along the edge of the crevice, flicks her tail and hastily, but carefully begins to make her way down, half-climbing and half-sliding down, using the foot- and hand-holds to control her descent. Farador, having already translated the new rune, says a quick prayer, kisses his holy symbol, then takes hold of the rope and begins hurrying down after his new feline friend. Klilxuac still contemplating the strength of the rope, is using his heavily armored companion as a test subject.

Down below, Aubron makes an immediate diagonal move and jabs at the plumpiest of the remaining rats, which is still gnawing on Kelben's thigh. His blade sinks through the rats thick fur and the rodent quickly falls motionless after a final, pained squeak.

The final starved rat, while tempted to remain in the skirmish on the chance of finding some food, decides it's best to live and fight another day so it hurriedly scurries towards the stairs on the far side of the ridge and quickly disappears.
End.jpg
End.jpg (43.74 KiB) Viewed 1423 times
With the threat over, Aubron moves to Kelben's unconscious form and, after inspecting the gashes and small, missing chunks of flesh in the gnome's thigh, attempts to stop any bleeding and stabilize his unconscious companion.

Shortly after Aubron begins to tend to the rogue's wounds, Sky, then Farador, then Klilxuac safely reach the sandy surface of the ridge and join him.

Aubron

With victory in hand for the glory of Solonor, Aubron attempts to mend Kelben's wounds. Please hold on, Kelben. The way is safe now, he says with sincerity and concerns.

After tending to his wounds, Aubron reaches into his pocket and holds the bronze pentacle tightly. He can be heard speaking in Elvish, but under his breath. His eyes closed, he is calling upon the grace of the Great Hunter to aid him in his quest. Immediately upon completing his prayer, he notices and immediate change in Kelben, as he regains health. Solonor be praised, he says with a huge smile.

Aubron

After ensuring the health of the gnome is stabilized, he immediately assists his new companions on getting off the ropes and handholds carved into the walls. While the others help tend to Kelben, Aubron's hunter instincts immediately go into overdrive. He inspects the firepit and sees the tell tale signs of goblins.

Aubron has tracked and hunted goblins and orcs for a very long time. He knows them well, and a plan is starting to form in his head. First things first, however, get Kelben well enough to move on.
Ok guys, I've been building a plan in my head. Aubron's favored enemies are orcs and goblins, and it is clear that there are Goblin-signs afoot (insert Dune reference - WormSign!). Anyway, I suggest that once we all get stabilized on this ledge that Aubron goes stealth mode and starts tracking down the stairs.

Sky

Bounding down the side of the ravine was quite fun for the Taxabi. Reaching the bottom, she surveys the carnage. "Well. Two rats and one gnome. Nice work Aubron." Sky looks around for signs of Kelben, then remarks with a start. "Oh! That's Kelben. Right."

She leans down over the fallen gnome, and starts singing a traditional taxabi lullaby: "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur! Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr!" Cast Cure Wounds: [1d8+3] = 1+3 = 4

*edit* Sky uses her Inspiration to gain advantage on that roll. [1d8+3] = 6+3 = 9

"Feeling better?" he asks Kelben.

Kelben eyes opening suddenly he gasps deeply once possibly startling everyone around him "I was dead for a moment wasn't I?" he asks as if he already knows the answer. "Yes, quite better now thank you. Lets not dally here don't neet more of them giant rats to come out at us." the gnome dusts himself off and stands a little wobbly for a second then sheaths his rapier and looks to the others making sure everyone made it down from the surface level.

Aubron

Aubron pats Kelben on the back. "Not to worry, Kelben. You weren't THAT dead for VERY long." and then he laughs to himself.

Once everyone has safely reached the ledge, Aubron says to the group, "Well, unless there are any objections, I think I will be on my way. Kelben, you get healed up while I am out, and I will come back very soon." Aubron then pulls his longbow and readies himself of the hunt. His blood starts flowing, and an energy fills his body that he has not felt in a very long time. His ears are much more sensitive, and his eyes more focused. It is time to track his prey, and he heads down the steps.
Building on the tracks left by the Goblins in the firepit, Aubron will attempt to stealthily track the Goblins

I guess he's not very stealthy after all. Ugh

Kelben says in lower tones "Unless we've found the magical healing apple I suspect I am healed as much as I can be with out is resting for a long period of time." he sighs at the end of the statement. The gnome cringes as he notices Aubron's stealthiness lacks a little than it did when climbing down here.

Scouting Ahead
After stabilizing Kelben and giving way to Sky, Aubron confirms the nearby fire pit contains nothing more than some small animal bones and crude spear tips.

Sky leans over the fallen gnome, and putting her bard talents to use, sings a traditional Taxabi lullaby while casting a 'cure' spell on Kelben, reviving him. "Feeling better?" Farador asks of the recovering gnome, while also complimenting Sky' healing abilities. "Corellion would approve," he says.

Kelben's eyes shoot open and he gasps deeply. "I was dead for a moment wasn't I?" he asks, already knowing the answer. "Yes, quite better now, thanks," he says, mindful of not ignoring Farador's question. Once he's up on his feet and able to dust the sand out of his clothes and wounds, he urges the group to push forward.

Aubron, who has a knack for hunting orcs and goblins, picks up some tracks left by the creatures originating by the fire pit, which lead down the stairs. "I'll be back very soon," he says, producing his longbow and readying himself for the hunt. With a confident nod, the ranger begins to follow the tracks down the 5-foot wide steps of matted dirt and sand which are roughly-carved. Unfortunately, he is so focused on not losing track of the smattering of goblin tracks he's following he doesn't notice the plumb-sized stone which he accidently kicks and sends rolling down the stairs in front of them, causing a considerable amount of noise, especially when the goal is to to move quietly.

Thankfully, the rock stops rolling pretty quickly as it reaches a landing at the end of the first "zig" which is roughly 20-feet below the ridge where the rest of the group waits.

This new landing area is full of goblin tracks, scattering in all directions, but the ranger is able to easily follow multiple sets which continue down the next "zag" in the set of switchback stairs, which Aubron can see descend another 20-feet or so before settling on what appears to be another landing.

Aubron

Kicking the rock, Aubron cusses to himself, "How very embarrassing of me." and he keeps on the lookout for goblin tracks. Descending the stairs, he is confident that his quarry has come this way. Not necessarily due to his expert tracking skills, but because Aubron is fully aware that goblins don't have wings, and there is no other way they could come. After the first landing, he looks up towards his companions, but they must be busy tending to Kelben.

So he continues down to the next landing and sees the tracks everywhere. He decides to look around this area to see if anything makes sense of the main traffic patterns that the goblins use. During his search, he keeps looking up towards the landing that his friends are in hopes that he can catch a glimpse of them. Being in a significant crossroads has its disadvantages though, so Aubron remains alert and vigilant for anything coming this way.
Perception: [1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23
Dave, two questions:
1. Do you need another survival check for this other landing?
2. Can I see the 40' to the landing that the party is?
