The Long Route, Days 66-69
For three uneventful days you follow the compacted roadway known as the Long Route, crossing the vast, desolate salt waste before coming to the shallow cliffs and the marker stones on Day 69. As you approach the ancient, repurposed stones with the thoughts of making camp for the night, the smell of a fire enters your olfactory senses. The odor jerks your attention, and then, subtle movement and voices can be seen and heard mingling about the two pillars. The stones are still over 300 yards away, but you can’t imagine that the sources of the voices haven’t seen your group traveling across the flat, featureless wasteland.
