Swing Low
Round 3

Chauncey sees that he is running away all by himself, not that he has never done that before. He slowly makes his way back towards the group, willing to lend his voice if absolutely necessary, but only from a distance. Ferris stays up on his branch, slowly cranking on his crosspick. Wes keeps his distance and begins chanting in a very strange manner.

Lightfinger hops off of the ape's back and darts between its legs, right back into the bush. The halfling desperately tries to find a place to hide...from his already blinded opponent. The fighters Saracen and Brufrig continue their attacks all alone, neither able to cause more damage to the vine swinging ape. It continues blindly spinning and flailing, landing one lucky punch on Saracen's shoulder for its wild efforts. 2 dam

The fighters are pleased to see that Wes pulls through again, creating an easy to see magical halo of purple light around most of the black ape.

Saracen winces as the claws of the creature clip his shoulder greaves and slashes outwards towards the ape as it spins manically, glowing from its eyes and the halo of fire.

[1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20 : [1d8+3] = 4+3 = 7 : [1d12+3] = 10+3 = 13

Wes waits with his spear at the ready, having already felt the power of the ape's blows, he doesn't want to get any closer to it. However, he dare not throw his spear while the others are still exchanging blows with it. To complicate things further, he's still trying to keep a wary eye on the other ape still lurking in the bushes.

Brufrig Granitesunder

Seeing the beast lit up with a purple glow, Brufrig knows his strike does damage this time, feeling the blade bite deep.

Chauncey sees no need to change his plan to stay out of range. He begins searching in all directions, mostly up into the canopy, for any ape accomplices trying to sneak up on them.

Swing Low
Round 4

Chauncey and Wes vigilantly look deeper into the trees and all around, hoping to monitor the other apes actions. They notice that the creature is slowly coming closer to the action, but is still far enough away to be unthreatening at the moment.

Saracen slashes into the blinded monster causing a deep wound and getting its attention. The beast spins towards the attack again with its claws leading the way, somehow blindly gouging the halforc across the side of his head and face. 4 dam

Brufrig gouges back with his halberd, causing the beast to shriek out in pain again loudly as it now bleeds profusely. Lightfinger jumps back into the fray and finishes the monster off with a viscously deep stab wound to its innards that drops the huge beast on its face upon the jungle floor.

The ape in hiding does not act favorably to the fights outcome. It starts to shriek loudly and jump around, beating its chest hard and howling into the trees.

Lightfinger struggles with his sword.

After an unsuccessful attempt to pull his slim blade, the tall Halfling plants a foot on the ape and tugs desperately. Did you hear that?? He huffs, his long dirk finally free and pointing toward the howling, I wish we didn't have to do that, this is SO not good! Recalling the trap they blundered into, he wonders if this isn't another distraction ploy and turns sideward, his head snapping both ahead and behind. It's obvious the adrenalin is working.

Wes

"I agree", says the druid. "A terrible waste. But one that was forced upon us." Wes points off towards the other ape and it's frenzied behaviour. "I think we need to leave here before that one decides to come over here. Or others show up to investigate all the noise".

Wes begins to slowly back away up the trail, seeing if the rest of the party will form up and depart. He keeps a watch on the second ape, but also gives the rest of the foliage an intermittent scan as he moves.

"Come then, let us leave this place before another attacks us by surprise again. It's a shame we can take it back to the village and let the locals feast, but that might lure its pack to Beachtown which may not be good." the half-orc will wipe his blade upon the fur of the beast, take some of the fur (a handful) of the strong creature and place it in his robes and gathers his flail in ice his sword is sheathed.

The holy champion will begin wandering off along the trail hoping the other ape remains where it is and putting some distance between them. Someome bringing up the rear of the group should keep a keen out for any followers yes!"

Chauncey hurries along with the others, taking his place in the somewhat protected center. He's no coward, but he knows he's but one surprise ape attack away from ending his promising wizard career and fertilizing plants out here in the jungle. "Mmmmm. Yes. A shame. Just a dumb brute. Probably just protecting his territory... with ambush tactics. Hmmmm. Let us make haste," he says, glancing back at the remaining ape from time to time as they continue down the trail.

With the man eating ape now face down in the dirt, the party decides that it might be a good idea to just move along before any more trouble appears. Even though each of them were nicely asked to bring back any food they could find, and they are still less than a 2 hour trip back to town, they instead just leave the 400 pounds of good meat to rot in the bush as everyone makes their way further up the logging trail. The astute members keep a sharp eye out all around, making sure there are no other apes ready to fall out of the trees onto them. None do.

The party continues on walking. After another hour or so on the hot, breezeless trail, they come to what must certainly be a game trail that leads directly off of the logging trail. There is a notch carved into one nearby tree, clearly put there to mark this trail.

Brufrig Granitesunder

Well, do we follow the main path or do we take this trail?

Wes

"Well, there's no real evidence that the zombies came from either direction really. I'd be slightly more inclined to think that the zombies came down the main trail, since I can't imagine them walking neatly in single file down a game trail. But stranger things have happened I suppose" Wes bends down to take a closer look at the vegetation around the game trail.

"On the other hand, we know the group that headed out before us was going up the trail to the camp. To proceed in that direction seems like a duplication of effort. Perhaps we could investigate this trail for a mile or two and see where it leads".

Saracen pauses to heal himself a little after the ape battle.

[1d8] = 1

He sighs and moves to the trail, looking for signs of the kinds of ripped clothing or rotting flesh that may have torn off the undead as it retreated. Or any evidence of an unusual passing from the flora that someone with a shambling walk might make, guessing of course.

"Well, it's quite simple! We just have to look for... you know... zombie tracks..." Chauncey trails off looking at the ground at the head of the side path, not at all sure what he's looking for. After Wes speaks, he adds, "Hmmm. I, for one, am inclined to follow the trail for a short distance, as you suggest, Wesley. Unless we find some sign of the zombies on the main path to indicate that as the correct direction.

Lightfinger cleans the blood from his sword.

I could check down that game trail real quick, He offers, still shaken by the encounter with the ape, But if I return faster than I go, you know something's after me.

Marked Trail
Mid-morning
Hot and humid

The wandering adventurers take a quick break at the marked trail. They spend a short time healing and reorganizing, looking at the trees and vegetation around the opening while Lightfinger makes his way down the game trail a short distance. There are no tracks from anything except game animals near the intersection with the larger trail. However, the halfling thief eventually spots some boot tracks in the mud that don't show up until he gets about 20 feet into the jungle. The tracks only appear to continue deeper into the jungle and there are no boot prints that indicate anyone has returned from this trail. Following them back, Lightfinger spots a place about 30 feet before the game trail where a few folks must have carefully entered the jungle. It is obvious to the thief that whoever entered the bush must have been trying to hide their passing as best they could.

The boot prints found are slightly smaller than most human feet. The dark trail continues off in a westerly direction, heading deeper into the jungle. No evidence of the zombies can be seen in this area. The normal cacophony of jungle sounds rips through the still, stiflingly hot air.

Wes

"Well, still nothing to indicate zombies on either trail. Now, these boot tracks clearly aren't zombies. And the fact that they are taking the trouble to conceal themselves is....puzzling". Wes pauses for a moment to dredge up a memory. "Brufrig. Didn't you hear a story about dwarves who set out into the interior to look for places to mine? That might explain the smaller boot size. And they don't want to be followed because they have struck an ore vein or something and don't want claim-jumpers moving in."

"Heck, maybe they're the ones who disturbed the zombies"

Saracen listens to the druids wise words and the halflings report upon his return and nods. "Perhaps the track is still the best option at this point, I would think zombies would leave a most distinctive trail and not be so adept at navigating through underbrush and such without leaving marks of their passing." he says wiping sweat from his brow.
