[Completed] - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Ulf snorts. "I just might do that," he replies in goblin. "But not today."
He smacks the wolf across hard across the nose with his hammer.
Hammer of lightning, +2 (THAC0 19): [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23 Dmg: [1d4+2] = 4+2 = 6 + [1d6] = 5 elec.

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Yes! Nice hit!
Seadu emits an involuntarily cry for joy as he sees Ulf's attack hit home, and continues the pitched fight against the wolf (or the orc, if the wolf is already killed by Ulf's hit).
Mace attack (ThAC0 19) [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6, damage [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6
Initiative [1d6] = 2

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
FYI that formula looks off: you get +2 damage for the enchantment but also +1 for the Bless effect. I will adjust it when I do the combat summary later.Zhym wrote:Ulf snorts. "I just might do that," he replies in goblin. "But not today."

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Does Bless add damage? I thought it only increased to-hit, but maybe it's different in LL than AD&D.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Yep, in Basic/Classic, bless is +1 to hit and damage. The original spell in OD&D gives +1 morale and attack, and the AD&D spell obviously built off of that. For B/X, Cook modified it to give +1 damage, though I'm not sure why. B/X already has the cool morale factor, so the OD&D version would've been a great way of showcasing morale.
Another small reason why I've never understood the argument that Classic and OD&D are all the same basic 'Original D&D'.

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Come to think of it, there should be another +1 damage from Ulf's strength bonus when he is wielding the hammer in melee.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
So with a bless spell he's getting a full +4 to damage rolls, plus another 1d6 lightning damage?! Man, that dwarf is a powerhouse!

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 6
The orc, cursing low, attempts to press his attack against Martin in the hopes of subduing the heavily-armored cleric before taking such a wound in return. He continues to strike powerfully, but the blow is wild and swings well wide of even Martin's shield, sending more dirt in a wild spray.
At the same time, the dire wolf regains its composure and leaps at Ulf, striking him forcefully and tearing at his arm before he brings his hammer down powerfully on the creature's head (Ulf takes 5 damage), knocking the creature senseless (you rolled a natural 20 and max damage so you get an added impact on top of the rolls).
Seadu's attack goes wide of the wolf as he endeavors to avoid striking his ally while the dwarf and the wolf are entangled, but Martin lashes out once more with his made and it finds a target in the orc's exposed shoulder, swinging down diagonally with a nasty crunch. The orc's shoulder hangs a bit more loosely than before, his guard dipping even more.
Orc Attack [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3, damage [1d8+1] = 8+1 = 9
Dire wolf attack [1d20] = 15, [2d4] = 5 damage
Martin attack [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15, damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3
Current combatants:
Orc: 17 damage taken
Dire wolf: 13 hp remaining
Actions and initiative!

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Ulf grunts at his wound and raises an eyebrow at the hardy orc. "Quite the specimen, aren't you? Who should I tell people we killed?" he asks in goblin.
Hammer of lightning, +2 (THAC0 19): [1d20+3] = 8+3 = 11 Dmg: [1d4+2] = 2+2 = 4 + [1d6] = 4 elec.
Would Ulf get a to-hit bonus to attack the stunned wolf?

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
It will just use its non-Dex AC.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Seeing the wolf rattled to its bones, Seadu takes the opportunity to change his stance and engage the resilient orc while he is still occupied against Martin.
Mace attack (ThAC0 19) [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21, damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3
Initiative [1d6] = 3
Now we're on fire!

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Max damage or a status effect?
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
I'd go max. If 24 points of damage doesn't kill this dude...well, we'll still get him, but DAMN.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Waiting on confirmation from Starbeard since it's his crit.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
BTW, does Ulf recognize the orc at all from the Battle of Vaul?
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Yes, this is the surviving orc lieutenant.
Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Sorry! I'm with Zhym, let's go max damage.

Martin steps to one side, easily avoiding the orc's next attack, biding his time. The dire wolf struggles back to its feet, shaking its head back and forth to clear it of the fog Ulf's strike brought to it.
Orc Attack [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3, damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2
Eyeing Ulf as he circles Martin, the orc gives a grim, growly chuckle. "My name is Gruok--tell it to your god so he knows who is sending him such beautiful--" He is cut off mid-taunt by the force of Seadu's mace striking him across the neck from behind, as the cleric pivoted from the wolf to attack the heavily-armored assailant who assumed he would be otherwise occupied. Shocked, his shield lowers, and Martin's mace finds his exposed chest, crumpling the breastplate under a mighty blow. The orc stumbles to his knees, blood suddenly streaming out from under his helmet, and collapses face first in the dirt.
Martin attack [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14, damage [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
The dire wolf, seeing its master fall dead under the group's combined assault, whimpers and appears ready to bolt.
morale [2d6] = 12

Re: Expedition - Ulf/Mission for the Dwarves - May 20, 1 VC
Ulf scoffs. "You will not be sending anyone else to meet your god," he says. He lets the dire wolf flee (unless the dire wolf also seems to be a pack animal?), then searches the remains of the dead.
