Strategy thread
Strategy thread
Strategize character choices and actions here.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Re: Strategy thread
Was trying to build a gnome illusionist/thief.
Apparently the INT/DEX scores create some pretty dumb limitations, so I'm going to rethink it.
Off to the drawing board again...

Re: Strategy thread
Is everyone aware of / using the redefined demi-human level limits in the 1E Unearthed Arcana?
Just curious because they are waay higher than the level limits in the 1E PHB, generally go up depending upon how high your toon's main attribute rolls are (than average). Is it the same deal with the OSRIC Unearthed? (Don't have that yet!
)
Just wanted to be sure to mention that as a Point of Order!

Yosef Travathas: High Elf Fighter4/Magic-User3 (rredmond's Pacesetter Games "Legacy of the Unknown" OSRIC Playtest)
Brok Sterling: Human Assassin3 (ToniXX's Incursion into Newiron OSRIC Playtest)
Tanik Tremwoodak: Dwarf Cleric3 (Dave's 1e Skype Game)
DM: home-brew OSRIC "A New Hope to the West" campaign
Fireball... good!!

"Everything."

Re: Strategy thread
I've decided to cover all the bases with a Half -elf Fighter (8)/Magic user (9)/Cleric (8)
I don't have a copy of UA so it's just straight PHB 1E

Re: Strategy thread
I love that we've basically had zero strategy discussion in the B Group.
Play what you want. We'll figure it all out when we get there. May the best player(s) survive.

Re: Strategy thread
Strategy? My only strategy at this point is not to be the first one to die

You don't have to be the fastest; just make sure you're not the slowest.

Re: Strategy thread
Wondered if the DM's would allow us to create a 'Base Camp Everest' scenario for the party? I am thinking that this lost tomb is exactly that and therefore in some wild and foreboding place, perhaps random encounters yes but not overrun with civility. So I propose one party strategy to hire some hirelings who will man a fortified camp from which we can strike out from and also bring any injured back too for a bit of R & R? Might be good to have some means of restoring gear, HP, food etc.? Otherwise we might need to plan to take some pack animals along with us?
unless party mages gift us all with unseen servants of our own to carry all the tresure out....
McCloud expressing his usual optimistic musings. "he who fails to plan is planning to fail!"

Re: Strategy thread
Yes we are going to assume some sort of base camp is not far from the tomb. This just makes it easier to justify the quick and easy replacement of PCs as they die.
Re: Strategy thread
have learned a couple of orcish proverbs for the wise amongst us as we set about our endeavours with the tomb!
"the tongue that licks the masters hands also cleans the dogs bollocks!"
"the early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese!"
have posted McCloud up for approval on forum,
in character would like to ask about maps or intelligence that points us in direction of said horror tomb and what background knowledge would we have of Acerack?

Re: Strategy thread
Party 2, input please on what class of pc would be least likely to die quick most useful to the party as it stands, in case no one shows up or someone (perish the thought) dies a few steps into the Tomb? I rolled 3 for just this purpose. Thanks.

Re: Strategy thread
Well, looking at what we have already, I'd say thieving skills are fairly well covered, as are magic users. But maybe not enough tanks/heavy melee (assuming there are things to fight and not just traps to deal with)?tkrexx wrote:Party 2, input please on what class of pc would be least likely to die quick most useful to the party as it stands, in case no one shows up or someone (perish the thought) dies a few steps into the Tomb? A little more healing is never a bad thing, either.

Re: Strategy thread
Lucky then I can drive one. Tank it is.But maybe not enough tanks

Re: Strategy thread
I just got called up from the minors (waiting list). I figured that I had more time so I only created one character (human bard). Hopefully he is useful in the Tomb. If he dies there will be nobody to write an epic poem of our exploits....
Re: Strategy thread
Alethan I must say I love the detailed descriptions you gave in character I quite enjoyed that. Here's to hoping were as well trained as you think going into this pit of despair

John the Fisherman 1st Level Cleric of the Esoteric Order of Dagon, Mushgnome's Deep Arkham
Tafari 1st Level Thief, Waysoftheearth's "The Deep in the Hinterlands" OD&D
Bindle Roddycock 10th level Master of the West Wind, Tomb of Horrors
Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master 1st Level Fighting Man, Mushgnome's Chainmail Carcosa
Re: Strategy thread

I ain't never played an 11th level thief before, so I HAD to do it just once. Also, I like writing.
I think the distracting cat bit was rather nice, though. Maybe I should see if Till can get a "familiar" of some kind...

Re: Strategy thread
Don't mind being pick pockets at all. That was a nicely written post and some excellent RP.
now I just need to come up with a proper response...I suppose i should have him be at least a bit contrite but I've never played a character to be a complete asshole before, and since the life expectancy of these guys is expected to be low you wouldn't have to put up with him for long...
I suppose a little party cohesion would be nice though.

Re: Strategy thread
Yeah I formed my character off of the original drunken master movie starring Jackie Chan. Bindle's attitude is similar to the old master who trains Jackie Chan. He is hard and kind of a dick but it's because he cares and knows how he will only succeed if he is truly ready.
