I just put a bolt of cloth in Aldus' inventory. I deducted 5gp for it. Does that sound like a fair price? I figure really cheap stuff might be had for 1 gp, and fancier could run you 10, 20 or more.
Also, poor Aldus does not have enough cash for any armor at all. So his first order of business is going to be to mug somebody with leather and shield!
Oh, and should we assume we have all our stuff when captured? Even weapons?
I know I promised no heavy-handed worldbuilding, but then this happened:
This hilly, forested region, located in the West of the Old Kingdom, saw some of the worst of the recent conflict. Villages and towns that resisted the Empire’s conquest were razed, and their inhabitants either arrested or displaced. With the siege of the last remaining settlement of the Old Kingdom underway, the Old King trapped and his son and daughter both missing, resistance across much of the Kingdom has evaporated.
Farmers, weavers, millers and masons have quietly returned to their old lives. Older, some wiser, some missing a finger or two. There is little charity for those veterans whose bodies and minds have been broken by the war.
The Empire’s administrators are eager to portray the new order as an antidote to the Old King’s tyranny. Despite proclamations announcing public works and lower tithes, justice is frequently swift and arbitrary. The Empire is equally keen to crush any dissent or opposition.
You were arrested in the town of Pinewarden. Following the obliteration of the largest town in the region, Greybridge, Pinewarden has, in recent months, bloomed into the region’s mercantile and civic hub.
As the refugee camp outside the town walls has grown, so too have local tensions. The restless troops of the nearby Imperial camp have done little to calm the situation, despite the urging of their administrators.
Brawls in the street, theft and the occasional light arson presage troubling times for Pinewarden’s citizens.
Woah, 50 coins. That's an interesting problem with which to begin this game.
Bows are not mentioned in the core rules at all. David Black states in "Additional Things":
There are no bows /1 handed weapons on the equipment list?
Yeah, my bad. Bows should cost the same as 2-Handed weapons. 1 handed weapons should probably be half that.
How far can bows shoot?
The rules state that ranged attacks against Close targets have Disadvantage. Therefore by lack of ruling they can shoot Distant targets, although I'd probably rule that those shots have Disadvantage too. http://the-black-hack.jehaisleprintemps ... hings.html
So what do you think, short bows deal standard class based damage and long bows operate as two-handed weapons? If that's reasonable then he had the following things with him when he was captured:
shortbow [as available per his class]
quiver of arrows [10]
work tools [2]
flint & steel [3]
preserved rations [15]
backpack [5]
wineskin [1]
assorted common herbs [10]
4 gold coins

I'm thinking Ezra's religious affiliation may be what landed him in captivity. Arresting the vicar and his assistant could be a good authority move for the Empire, even if Ezra's not much of a mover and shaker in the community.
And thanks also for your patience; just waiting on the campaign forum to be set up.
Gods-wise, lab mix, what/who does Ezra follow? A pantheon? A mighty omnipotent power? A wish-granting duck?
Hmm. I guess that depends on what sort of pantheon you have in mind for the setting. I've been imagining him as a fairly traditional "not"-Judeo-Christian...following the sort of religion we see in fantasy that basically looks like the Catholic church...but isn't. Probably believes in many gods but worships a solar deity. Could be Pelor, Apollo, Helios, Heliod...I'm pretty open to whatever you think fits, honestly.
Living by guile in and around the southern cities, young Aden was scooped up arbitrarily into captivity by suspicious troops wary of anyone who appears unaffiliated and nimble with a bow or sword.
Until this happened he was, in fact, fairly ambivalent. He's reconsidering this position.

I did this - =SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(CONCATENATE(INDEX($B:$B,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA($B:$B)),1),INDEX($C:$C,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA($C:$C)),1),", ",INDEX($D:$D,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA($D:$D)),1)," ",INDEX($E:$E,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA($E:$E)),1)," ",INDEX($F:$F,RANDBETWEEN(1,COUNTA($F:$F)),1)),"-",""),"…","")
And the first result was "Tawmis, the Red Eagle of the Golden Heavens".
Definitely a keeper.
Other gods worshipped by the people of the region (and who may or may not actually exist) therefore include:
Tawmin, The Ancient Child of Ancestors.
Burnon, The Flowering Keeper of Night.
Worgam, The Weary Thunder of Plenty.
Burran, The Burning Echo of Mercy.
and, of course,
Yiol, The Pure Judgment of the Harvest.
