Clay Weatherwax
With battle raging on around them, Morr and Clay stay on the ground, with Clay looking over Morr's wounds. Oh, Morr. Dear dog. Let the farmer's deal with that monstrosity. I need to check on Asala to get you some bandages. Stay here. Stay. Clay shuffles hurriedly on his twisted ankle to the donkey and Balex, sending Maurice ahead to see if everything is in order.
Clay is pretty useless in melee, so he will let the farmers help Foxy.

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
With Mr. Farrow on his feet, the three farmers rush to Foxy's aid while Clay hurries over the hill to collect Asala and Balex. He finds the goblin excited for news of the battle and Asala perturbed at being interrupted when she is munching on a nice patch of clover. Mors whimpers, licking his wounds. Maurice hoots back affirmation and flies off to find and follow the Red Robed mage.
The skeletons press their advantage in the stalemate with the red-headed buccaneer. Her lunge slides between the two creatures, and her riposte is interrupted as one of the creatures catches her arm, biting deeply through her less-armored elbow with its vicious, fleshless teeth. It hangs on, rending side to side, until the farmers arrive, both Gus and Mr. Farrow landing solid blows to finish the creature off. Foxy's left arm is nearly sundered, but she remains upright and fighting shock. The final skeleton, missing its blow this time, senses that the life is almost gone from Foxy, and doubles its efforts to bring her fully into death.

Foxy O'Hare
Life almost gone from Foxy? "Is that the best you can do? had bigger lovebites from the gigalos' by the riverside!" Foxy taunts the skeletons despite her wound. "Fuck, that'll have to be in a sling into healed up".
Bleeding and torn but still feisty, Foxy aims a blow to sever the skeletons head. Foxy melee: Scimitar:[1d20] = 7 damage:[1d8] = 5
Her aim is a little off, hope the farmers can do better. Did George not attack last time?
If we kill the final skeleton this round we need to have a little discussion to agree on the next steps forward.

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
(George missed last round.)
The skeleton lunges at Foxy with abandon, a natural fervor and lack of self interest rather than reaction to Foxy's goading. Its jaws close on empty air as Foxy dodges to the side. Foxy swings her sword, but with the pain in her left arm, it goes wide. Mr. Farrow, stepping to the defense of this besieged woman, brings down his flail with a might blow that utterly destroys the skeleton.
Having retrieved Asala and Balex, Clay hurries back. There is a moment of breath as they rejoin and regroup.

Foxy O'Hare
"Hoorah! First blood to us. Men, you did well. You winnowed these deathly bones just in time. We have downed these ferocious evil foes twice now, the last mage runs but we shall hunt him down."She hugs the farmers as brothers-in-arms, who have survived battle together, giving them a peck on the cheeks.
"Clay you should be proud of your earth skills, the roots you called forth preserved us and turned the tide." Foxy gives Mors a rub on his ears and then does the same for Clay. "Don't worry little bro' I had faith you would come back to us!....
finish off the wine, you deserve it".
Foxy passes around the last drink of her wine skin and collects the two remaining strips of linen bandages. She will use one to sling her arm and pass the other to Clay to bind up Mors leg.both marked off sheet
"Let us gather their horses and put them to good use. And search thoroughly through all the Red Robes belongings."
So do we track the mage? injured and alone he has two choices, to go to the goblin HQ and tell on us or retreat back to the ruins from whence he came. Foxy does not want to waste time hunting for him if it means we miss the girls trading window. If Maurice tracks him to a nearby hideout then we can flush him out, otherwise press on though we carelessly spoke in front of him about our plans...

"Carelessly"? But he was like Clay's best friend when That info was divulged. How could Clay have known?
I will post tomorrow. We are in a rough spot, to be sure. Maybe Balex knows a shaman that can tend to our wounds... Too bad that Mage escaped. That is one too many loose theeads.

Handling the mundane and moving you forward to your point of decision...
Gus and George hurry to collect the wandering horses, calming them and bringing them back to the group. Maurice returns and hoots to Clay. Though he should easily have overtaken the mage, the owl saw no sign of him. Mors licks his wounds. Balex questions, wanting to know about the battle.
Amidst the robes, broken bones, and sloughed skin, you find the following, carefully cleaning the ichor from each item.

- Three iron daggers
- 26 Copper pieces, crudely wrought
- 14 silver pieces, bearing a closed fist sigil
- 10 electrum pieces bearing a closed fist sigil
- A book covered in beige human skin with a weeping eye brand upon it.
- A book covered in mottle-green goblin skin with a bisected circle brand upon it.
- A book covered in greyish wolf-hide with a weeping eye brand upon it.
- A matching pair of probably ornamental Cold Iron bird cages, each with an inscription in a strange tongue and set with 7 Moonstones. It appears to have been made by sophisticated but savage humanoids and are several hundred years old.
- A platinum set of earrings, each with the image of a goat’s head. The patina on the metal shows its antiquity at several thousand years old.
- a banded agate
- a pale blue lapis lazuli
Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
all wonderfully evil if course...
Foxy O'Hare
Foxy suggests the following actions to the party:
The farmers wear the mages Red Robes, however bloody, it just adds dramatic effect. Foxy and the farmers take a draft horse each. On Foxys' horse attach the two bird cages to the bridle or saddle. ( Something tells me that the cages are for the two girls to be kept or transported in, not sure but it makes evil sense). Foxy will put inside the cages a dog skull each for effect. Foxy speaks Elven, oldest of the humanoid languages, foes the cage writing relate to that language?
Tie remaining skulls to other horses, give one skull to Balex. (Tell him if he polishes it every day he will grow into a powerfull shaman.)
Bag up the 'closed fist' coins together. Clay you could be treasurer. Farmers take the gemstones. Foxy puts on the earrings and split the daggers to whoever. Foxy take one.
The books.....anyone recognise the weeping eye or broken circle? Dare we ask Balex to look at the goblin skin book? Clay, as our resident diviner, take a look...though the weeping eye could be a curse on any non-evil or non-lawful people who look in. Any chaotic amongst us...?
Shame we can't track mage...maybe gone invisible or shape changed?
Foxy, arm in sling underneath her jacket, (skeletal arm in place), straightens her Tricorn hat and peacock feather. Applies some glossy red lipstick and is ready for the next foray....to the goblin HQ?
Clay, add what you think.

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
The cages are not large enough to hold human children, and are a thinner, but well-wrought iron such that they'd likely break it.
Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Yeah, I was thinking the red robes would cast a spell on the kids and either shrink them or polymorph them into animals to be carried inside. We saw no sign of evil black ravens or such familiars that might stay in them so Foxy is hazarding a guess as to what purpose they serve. Hence using her elvish to try to decipher any close meanings to the script written on them.

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Clay Weatherwax
As they walked to the battle-site, Clay told details of the fight to Balex, doing his best to spice it up though his heart was not fully in it. He made sure to tell how Beith's magic had rendered all but two foes helpless; that the fire-dog was dispatched by a single arrow and dog bite; that the sole-surviving mage had escaped after animating the dead - at which point the pair re-entered the clearing to see a lone skeleton surrounded by Foxy and the farmers, who crushed it with apparent ease.
Clay carefully inspected the items off the dead mages to see if he recognized anything from his lessons with the priests of Beith, and asked Balex if any of it seemed familiar as well. Marullus, is there any test for this? Probably an intelligence test...
Clay initially prods each item with a stick, then, if nothing happens, he will lift each up in the waning light to insect them. Knowing the books were filled with arcane spells, he will wraps them in a cloth and stow them safely on his person.
Before we part with any of these items, I would prefer to have the opportunity to look for auras of magic on them, but that will not happen this evening. And likely as not, the goblins will have a shaman nearby to examine anything passed to them for auras as well.
The mage would be trackable now - he is likely hiding in a cave or has turned invisible. Morr would be up to the task. If we follow him now he will not have time to memorize any more spells. If we wait... He will be more troublesome. It really depends on how long it will take to get to the hold for Sdubok's gloaming. I doubt we have time to find the mage. Depending on Balex's judgement, I believe our best course of action is to reclaim the girls quickly and unseat Dmukas.
Clay is of the opinion that the group needs to "pay" for the girls by pawning off the daggers and bird cages and a gem or two. Right or wrong (form a human perspective), the goblins expect to be paid for their captives. Out of earshot of Balex, Clay will discuss with Mr. Farrow and Ms. O'Hare that Balex is the biggest wild card. He expects us to attempt to place him on the throne. If they pretend to be Red Robed mages, they will be unable to do that. But it is likely safer and faster. If they try to dethrone the king, they are fighting another fire-dog, a goblin king and a whole lot of goblins and any magic they have...
Sorry for the delay. I thought I sent this last night. Glad I didn't though. The proof-read was worth it!

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Foxy is not sure about unseating any goblin king. We just haven't the arms (in her case literally) to do that. Down to 2hp, Foxy is one swing away from adding to the bonfire pyre. Not sure Mr Farrow is much better and Mors is on his last (3) legs.
Perhaps Mr Farrow can chip in any tactical thoughts IC since it is his daughter inside and therefore the greater risk is on his part. Unless we believe the escaped mage is holding onto any further 'strong' magics that are needed in the exchange, I think we might just let him be. No telling of course but a twice wounded mage is no good to the goblins and without a horse, he had best sneak off back to the ruins while he can.
These spell books, were they found one on each dead mage or all together? Human skin, goblin skin, wolf skin. Maybe the shaman or king will know more about them but I hesitate just to hand them over, they could be used against us.
I don't think the daggers are part of the trade, just the weapons of the mages, (hopefully +3 vorpal blades of warg slaying...
). So that leaves the gemstones and the bird cages....still think the bird cages have a bigger significance than just for captive birds. Hope the goblins haven't shrunk the kids.
So Foxy is not sure really what to do except look the part, be as devilishly intimidating as we can (sure the earrings add to her charm), demand the children and ride off into the night, leaving them to dance around the fire...
Any more thoughts Clay. And can Balex let us know how far we are from the HQ and more info on this moon time sacrifice?

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Balex is pleased by the obvious carnage that lies along the trail in the sunny afternoon light. He pokes the gooey, sloughed skin and cackles, then cavorts around, banging two human bones like a rhythm instrument.
You expect that the sun will set just before 9:00, and the moon is expected to set about 9:45. The time when the moon shines in the darkness is the auspicious time and when the trade was to occur. Balex also says that the party and excitement will continue most of the night, but Dmukaz's rituals come first (where the farmers were to be sacrificed), then the King's exchange. You surmise that Goblins are not much for delayed gratification and that 45 minutes is likely more than enough time for formalities before their revelry begins in full.
Balex examines the items. He eyes each thing covetously. He doesn't really understand the books - the idea of writing is foreign to him. (You did recover one book from each dead human.) He is likewise unimpressed by the antique earings and their artistry. He clearly recognizes the value of coins, though, and looks to Clay to see if a few can be his. He cackles at the bird cages, "Snatchers to the north, grab grab grab." He pantomimes grabbing small creatures and shoving them into the cages and then smiles. Overall, he displays no particular recognition of the items here as special. "Red Robes promise big magic; that's we go to get little Bigguns for them. Are these big magic?" he asks, looking to Clay.
Mr. Farrow is shaken and distraught, but keeping himself together. So much magic and such horrific results from its use has left him visibly affected. "I... we... we just have to get the girls back. We must. This is no place for them." He chokes up, then composes himself. "If you must trade something, trade me. I will go if we can get my girls free." Gus and George, strangely unaffected by the horrors of the last hour, are invigorated for the next fight. They both object strenuously to Mr. Farrow's offer. "Surely there's another way... these creatures are vicious cowards. we can't go back without ya," they plead with him.
Balex chortles with glee, clacking the bones together in rhythm at them once more.
Geography and time: The Red Robed wizard only ran for about three or four minutes before Maurice would have overtaken him, so if you do believe he is nearby, it would take one or two actions (15-30 minutes) to thoroughly search. You are 2-3 miles from the Goblin HQ, and we'll say that you can make it walking one hour or on the horses in an hour and 15 minutes.
Actions: If you're going to depose the king or fight to free the girls, that is pretty straightforward. If you try bluffing or tricking the goblins into compliance, I'll handle it as a social encounter, which I've explained a bit more here.

Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Should we assume that Neither Foxy and Clay do not recognize anything in front of us? Iconography, language, etc?
The book are most likely spell books and will be worth a lot in town.
Were any of these items (jewelry, specifically) found being worn by the mages? Or were they just stowed away in their robes? If worn, it is more likely they will offer some powers, though it could just be mystical trinkets.
Clay Weatherwax
Clay stows an iron dagger in his belongings, thinking it will come in handy to prepare food or dig a hole some time.
Magical items are a wondrous thing to have, but not worth our lives. And many items have power because we believe in them. I say we go in and trade one of these skulls - which we will tell them is to drink blood from to give them strength and courage in battle - and the bird cages. One for each girl. If they want to know what it is used for, we say we will send another mage to teach them. If we are pressed, we threaten to leave with the magic or offer the gemstones.
Balex, we you can have coins for your help to us. But they will be given after you have helped us with reclaiming these girls and lead us back to this man's farm. You will be our guide and you will be rewarded well for your services. And my friendship will be yours - you have seen what my god can do. That is strength. Will you help us?

The nature of the setting is IC discovery; things in this land will often be foreign to you, who came from over the southern mountains. I will present more clues as the chronicle continues and you can piece things together that way. When something is readable or has meaning for a particular player, I'll let you know, usually in private forums.
The earrings were worn by the female red robe, a young brunette before her flesh sloughed off. The cages were packed on a horse. The gemstones, coins, and books were in robe pockets.
Balex stops his frivolity and is abruptly serious. "You don't shame or remove Dmukaz? You do not show your God's might?"

Man! That dice roller loves to give me low rolls! Nice to hack that work in my favor once in a while. I just hope it is low enough.
Clay Weatherwax
Frowning at Balex, Clay responded, thinking that a return to intimidation would help in this instance. Do not confuse my offer of friendship with weakness - look at the carnage here and know that it was Beith that brought these mages low. And do not question when I do or don't call Beith's power to bear. I will do what I will. And I never said that Dmukas would go without some comeuppance. Fearing the loss of the goblin's allegiance, Clay spoke with Maurice.

Foxy O'Hare
Foxy has a hushed whisper into Clay's ear. "We need to hunt this mage in the short time we have left. I am not sure the strong magic to exchange for the girls is in the books alone. We need the last Red Mage to speak up."
Foxy calls for Clay to bring Mors, wounded as he his to sniff out the hiding place of the mage. She signals George to come with us as muscle and cautions Gus and Mr Farrow to watch over the copse, Asala and Balex.
"If we can flush him out quickly, without harm. Get him to speak. Maybe trade a horse for info and any magic needed for the girls" Foxy will follow Clay and Mors, scimitar drawn.

Clay wpuld be down for a mage hunt, but before we head out i will wait for Marullus to post about Balex's reaction and Maurice's response.
Re: Expedition - Foxy/Lost Children- 01 May 2021
Maurice hoots his affirmation and sets off to the east towards the Goblin Cave, agreeing on a signal with Clay by which he'll know to have the birds appear at the right time, supposing he can find some to help.
Balex grins, genuflecting to show respect to Clay's dominance in this situation. "The might of Beith is indeed great. I, too, must continue to live, however. If you do not call upon your Gods to remove Dmukaz this night, then I cannot return with you. The King will surely feed me to his hound if I arrive as your ally, then you depart without the deed promised. If I depart with you, I will surely be pariah if I ever return. I must return without you, but can speak of your great power in destroying my entire band; they were good warriors all. This way they know of your greatness, but I am not fed to the bonfires myself."
...
(expediting... as you agree to go after the Balex conversation ends. You can respond to conclude the above, then continue below for efficiency.)
Foxy, Clay, George, and Mors head off to seek the mage. Mors does, in fact, easily pick up the mage's trail as he runs and bleeds across the hillside. He leads you straight west along the trail, the path to where you saw him disappear over the next ridge. He continues over the ridge then jags left to a small copse of trees along the face of the incline. He sniffs over the area repeatedly -- the trail at the base of the ridge line, a knotty old oak tree, a large sheer boulder, a patch of blueberry bushes -- but seems frustrated. He plops down between the blueberry bushes near the boulder and whines.

Foxy O'Hare
Foxy calls the three to form a circle back to back, but a few feet apart to counter any area spell. If the mage attempts to cast he will become visible.
"I know you are here mage, I can smell your fear. Hiding like a woman, behind shadow and illusion. Come forth to parley with us. The magic we seek to get the children back, we will trade for your life and a horse to get you away. Step forth and reveal yourself"
Foxy is watching the boulder area, looking for any movement, sudden change of vision, a wavering in the air, sound or incantation being repeated. She hopes the hidden mage will speak up. George and Clay should focus on the tree and bush.
