Checking Interest: 2E Forgotten Realms Adventures

#1 Post by hedgeknight »

Good morning fellow gamers! Wondering about the level of interest for an AD&D 2nd Ed. game set in the Forgotten Realms. I'm relatively new to these boards, but not new to gaming or pbp gaming. Here's a little background about me:

Rolled up my first character in the spring of '82 for the adventure B4 - The Lost City. I was hooked from the beginning and have played virtually non-stop since. Have played and DM'd all of the editions, stopping at 3.5. I also have a love/hate relationship with Pathfinder - love all the shiny newness, hate getting sucked into yet another system/edition. Moved to NC in '98, leaving just about everyone I knew including my gaming group. So...I started gaming online via email at first before discovering pbp forums around 2004. I currently run a 1E Greyhawk game over on RPoL, play in a 1E game there, and play in two Pathfinder games on the Paizo forums.

So, enough about me, here are some options about this potential game:

- General campaign style game - group of adventurers set out to hunt for treasure, fame, fortune, etc. Could wind up being an epic, "save the Realms" type of game; could be a TPK.

- Series of "quick post" adventures - I announce a scenario and the first five/six people who post get to run it. Fast action, 2-3 weeks at the most, no commitment to a long-term game or campaign. Each scenario could see several different gamers/characters offering several the opportunity to play, if only for a short time.

- Monster characters - ever wanted to play a Hobgoblin or a Gnoll? Maybe a group of Goblins defending their tribe against Elves? Or humans? Or...a group of adventurers??? Or maybe the group is a band of Dwarves on a quest, with a wizard, and a Hobbit...er...okay, scratch that. Moving on!

- City based game? Dungeon crawling? Open wilderness where anything can happen? On the sea or under it?

So, that's off the top of my head. What are your thoughts? Are you interested in a 2E game set in the Realms? If so, let me hear about it and about the options above. Maybe you have another idea - please share it! Thanks!

Put me down as someone who is interested!

Since you asked about ideas -- here's a thought: I have been wanting to run/play in a 2e game with a restriction that players can only use material from the PHB. Keeps things simple, could get more people hooked into the game (most people hate kits, etc. --- I don't BTW) and maybe even get some of the 2e haters to dip their toes in to see it ain't so bad! :) What do you think? If you think it's not a good idea, that's cool, I will eventually be running a game like this anyway :)

You serious about there being no 2E love around here? Maybe I picked the wrong forum for this... :?

I'm up for kits or no kits - but I don't use the Player's Options rules, or Psionics.

Nope, we got 1.5 to 2.5E games.

Much love for all old school styled games here!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

You are in the right forums :) I was mostly making a joke that 2e is the black sheep in most circles because of all of the splatbooks (I love 'em all -- every edition, warts and all.)

I'd probably be interested. I seem to be on a 2e kick these days, and it's well known that I love the Realms.

I would like to give it a try as well! I have not played 2ed anything in years. I have the core books so I am good to go, just need to give myself a refresher.
As far as the Kits and whatnot go I really don't remember all that much about them (must not have played with the kits) so I have no opinion either way in that regards.
I have a love/love relationship with playing Dwarves so the idea of a group of Dorfs is very appealing  .

Personally I would like a longer campaign (any setting) where I would have time to actually get 'into' my character but again, whatever the consensus is would be fine.

The Unseen Servant is the welcome home to ANY RPG, regardless of the style, system, version, or edition.

Certainly, we cannot insure there will be interest in some versions of some games, or some new gaming concept someone wants to try, but we are happy to give you the opportunity.

As long as it involves role playing and dice, your game is welcome here.

Aw shucks, does this mean we can't be BD&D/AD&D1e Nazis anymore? I was having so much fun beating kids off my lawn with my serrated walking cane...

Just kidding, just kidding! :D

What Alethan said. Plus, there is neither connivance or design at work here. I would say the seeming dominance of AD&D in these here forums is a combination of its IRL popularity, previous familiarity and access to rules by players, plus the fact that those older variants of D&D seem to adapt quite well to PbP.

Yeah! We don't want no stinking diceless or card-resolution systems polluting these hallowed boards. If it ain't rolling them bones, it makes us groan.

Oh, and NO FURRIES!!! Goddamn freak perverts!

I haven't played TMNTAOS in probably 25 years... But I still have the rule book and think it would be fun to try again at some point.

I'd be interested in a game based on Samarai Cat, does that count?

^This

I'm on board Hedgeknight. Like Brund, it's been forever since I've played D&D so it'll take a little time to get back up to speed but hey, it's like riding a bike right?

I was going to say I didn't have a preference for or against kits but upon further reflection yeah, I do. I don't care for them. I think that's why I'm not a big fan of the newer edition Dungeons & Dragons, just to poke-monish for me. That said, if we can get a good enough group of role players then I suppose it really doesn't matter all that much. And for you Brund, I too will happily play a "Dorf" if we can get party consenus.

I don't know how you'd run it but i've always wanted to play a tabletop game based on a world like Dwarf Fortress. It would be hell, and death would be common but I think it would be loads of fun.

Nothing like angry carp killing your comrades and tantrum spirals leading to near fortress annihilation.
