"Foxy O'Hare

Foxy's IC thoughts:..." cheeky young bumpkin", she thinks, instinctively scratching her head and trying to feign a smile , " omg, I hope he didn't notice the split ends and greying roots"

"Thank you Mrs Farrow, yes we will come in.", Foxy puts her arm around the distressed Mrs Farrow. She was never really very good at this tactile, comforting hug lark, but she does her best anyway to show empathy with the child's mother. (After all, we are here for them aren't we? her conscience reminds.)

"Brother Mylo at the infirmary is keeping good watch over Clarabelle's father. I'm assured he is awake and standing strong. And I know the Sisters pray heartily for the children's,' safe return. 'Eruanna be a light to their hearts and a lamp to their paths'she quotes touching her palms, trying to bring some encouraging news.

Foxy indicates to Mrs Farrow to lead on into the dwelling, pausing just long enough to tie up Asala and whisper in his ears, " tell your master if he touches my hair again I'll be wearing his scrotum sack as another adornment on my lucky charm belt," tapping the rabbit feet pendants and coon tail.

Entering the home she will greet Mr Farrow and pass on greetings and condolences from Mr Hyde and other townsfolk. Foxy will introduce the companions as 'Miss O'Hare' and Bro Clay. Despite raising cattle, crops
or kids not being her forte, Foxy will listen with patience through the small talk until they can gently steer the conversation back towards the goblin raid and children.

Are there any small portraits of her daughter in the room?

Though I had siblings, I am no Brother. Just call me "Clay." Food would be wonderful if you can spare it. We are very sorry about your daughter and her friend. After seeing to Asala and asking Mor to stay with the donkey, Clay will follow Roxy and Mrs. Farrow into the house and talk about the goblin raid, weather, etc. Clay inquires about what they raise here - if it is mostly to sustain the families that reside here, or if they sell much of what they produce.

Foxy leans over and talks conspiratorially to the donkey. The donkey heehaws exuberantly in response. The dog dutifully waits outside with the donkey as the pair go inside.

Mrs. Farrow pulls together some early spring greens and bread with water from the well. It is a spare meal, but clearly cut deep from their supplies and her pride as a host. "Everyone's hungry by end of winter... loss of the smokehouse puts supplies less than they'd be," she says apologetically.

She grows more comfortable answering Clay about the weather. "First new moon after the spring equinox; important time to be sure. Gwanwen blesses the seeds sown this week. Frost should be passed and getting crops in helps the larder all the sooner."

She talks proudly of their farm to him as well. "It isn't an easy life out here, but we do so much. More acres under cultivation than any other, you know, and clearing a new field on the north edge this year, too. Wheat, of course, and animals pastured. Greens, root vegetables, even tomatoes. Supply most of the town, I'd say!"

As Foxy steers the conversation back to the goblins, her voice again quavers. "Our poor girls, killed by those loathesome beasts. They were playing, just playing, in the pasture.... She trails off, instead taking them into the bedroom to meet Mr. Farrow. Laid up with an infected and broken leg, he is clearly pained but fierce. "I'd never've let them take my girl... if I could move, I'd be out there still."

They are grateful for the good news regarding Mr. Tackett's recovery at the infirmary. There are no portraits in the home - a luxury above their modest means.

Foxy O'Hare

Foxy will help her host clear the table, arrange the flowers, trying to put her at ease, (any sign of other women, children around, dogs?).

"I am surprised the goblins raided so close to where the duke's men patrol. Do you think this was just an isolated attack, taking food and flock for themselves? Have your workers seen goblin scouts on the horizon watching the place? What of neighbouring farms, do the men patrol at night?"

Lots of questions, trying not to overload the poor couple but during the evening Foxy would like to check out the burned barn to find examples of goblin arrows, spears. Different tribes usually fletch their cocks in distinguishing ways.

The three missing labourers, which way did they go? The children's pasture? Numbers of goblins involved, and wolves, 6, 10, 20?

Seeing some cotten linen belonging to the their girl, Annabelle, Foxy will ask Clay, "Your hound is a good guard, could he follow a three day old scent in the morning?"

The other folks of the farm are trying to be inconspicuous as the Farrows entertain, but in the small space, and with the bunkhouse gone, it is difficult. There is another adult woman, briefly introduced as Mrs. Tackett. She tends a half-dozen small children who are trying their best to be neither seen nor heard. You find that Clarabelle and Annabelle were the oldest, being nine and 10, respectively.

Mr. Farrow offers, "The Duke's men do a fine job. There's lots of things to worry about out here, but they drive off the worst. Goblins used to be an issue, but we really thought they were gone after the Guard burned out their rotten little hole. Most folks are here, or the Trouble orchards; sticking together keeps us all safe."

You find also that the raid was six to ten goblins on wolves, they grabbed and fled, injuring the two persistent men and escaping before the Duke's men could respond. The tracks lead off southwest, and the three farmhands went after them the same way. You do find some arrows - the goblins used shortbows with arrows fletched with bantam chicken feathers.

As you loiter towards sunset, the Farrows finally apologize, but ask you to adjourn to the barn. They are short of space and all the hands need dinner, too. They offer you can stay overnight in the barn with the animals, which should stave off the cold, and say they appreciate any aid you can provide with the goblins come morning.

Foxy O'Hare

Thanking the hostess for their hospitality, Foxy will retire to the barn, laying a blanket out in the upper hayloft and stuffing a grain sack for a pillow. "Ladies in the left penthouse suite, gentlemen at the stable end and if you get cold, you'll have to cuddle the dog!"she jokes with Clay.

As the night darkens she will secure shut windows.

Proposals: Foxy will commit to searching for the two girls. If Mor can follow a trail, suggest we search from the pasture area and get info on the old goblin warren previously burned out. A roving bands might be too far away on the plains but if a group is rebuilding they could have captives? Don't think we are strong or stealthy enough to take on a tribe, could we do some kind of trade though?

Okay, let me know Clay's thoughts.

After the others leave, Clay lingers for a time with Mr. Farrow talking about the farm. Clay eventually makes up his mind and clears his throat. It seems clear that your spirit is connected to this land. Your wife and you speak of the seasonal rhythms and it certainly appears that you are not farming for riches. I feel my god, Beith, must smile upon your endeavors. If you allow it, I would like to pray over your wounds for you.

If Mr. Farrow says yes, I will attempt to cure light wounds. If not, Clay will thanks him for his hospitality and leave. After that is decided I will post about bedding down for the night - or Marullus can just advance us through the night. (Clay will bring the donkey and the dog into the barn with him.

At Clay's offer, Mr. Farrow swells with excitement, nodding his agreement, and Mrs. Farrow bursts into grateful tears. He prays over the wounded leg, the smell of loamy soil in the air. The puss and infection flowing out of it as the flesh mends and heals. His leg is soon mended enough for him to move it and stand. Mr. Farrow clasps his hand firmly, "I cannot be more grateful to you, Mr. Clay. I cannot let my girl out there, not with those goblins. I have to get her back, one way or the other. If you go to aid us in the morning, I'll go with you."

Foxy and Clay both adjourn to the barn, leaving an excited buzz in the farmhouse as the farmhands come in for dinner and hear the good news about Mr. Farrow's recovery. The hay loft is soft enough once the bedrolls are spread, and the donkey and dog are grateful for the indoor accommodations. The sliver of a moon sets, then an hour later the sun follows it to rest beyond the horizon, roughly about 9:00pm. You bolt the windows and both decide to drift off to a night's sleep.

You are awoken by the dog's low, menacing growl just after midnight. You ready yourselves and carefully peek out the window shutter, finding that it is one of the Archduke's patrols, stopping to check on the farmstead as they make their rounds. Free from threat, you calm yourselves back to sleep once more.

The sun comes up and with it the rooster, rousing you all. You ready yourselves and stow your gear, emerging from the barn. You find that Ms. Farrow has made you a hearty breakfast of toast and fresh eggs. She sends you off, admonishing you to take care of her husband and return him safely. After a pause, she continues quaveringly, adding Annabelle, too.

It is a cold morning, just above freezing with a heavy fog rolling across the fresh-tilled fields. Mr. Farrow is ready to go with you, a heavy flail in his hands which he retrieved from the tool shed and a heavy leather coat. The dog is excited to begin the day, the donkey more reticent, but following along with minimal protest.

No rations deducted for either of you. Even the donkey gets to eat in the barn. Mr. Farrow comes along as a retainer, following your lead.

How does spell memorization work? Does that happen with sleep, or was I supposed to say I was praying, or what? If possible, Clay will re-memorize Entangle and Cure Light Wounds.

Clay Weatherwax
After the patrol woke them, Clay spoke to Foxy in the darkness, sharing his thoughts on the situation at hand. Most people see goblins as an evil to be eradicated. But we should remember that this was their home first - they were driven from it. The goblins seem to be acting like any humans would in a similar situation, don't you think? Anyhow, I will help retrieve the girls - or their bodies - but I hope to do so without shedding blood. I fear the Farrows will be out for blood.

Clay's worries grew when he saw Mr. Farrow dressed for battle, but his relief was visible when it became apparent the farmer would be the only one coming with them rather than a mob of irate men who might act rashly and make matters worse. It's good to see you up and on your feet this morning, Mr. Farrow. As I thought, Beith smiles upon your endeavors here. We will be glad for the company, I am sure. Clay added a request for a loaf of bread to help recruit some local birds to their cause.

After breakfast, Clay carefully stowed his supplies on Asala again, listening to her body language to be sure she was comfortable. As he patted Mor's head he addressed Roxy. Mor can track the girls' scent, but we might also ask the local birds what they know. It might take us in a more direct route. What are your thoughts?

Spells are memorized/changed after eight hours of sleep. Prayer/study time is assumed, but you can include it in your RP at your discretion - I'm not going to play "gotcha" with it or impose burdensome time lengths. Normally, I'll expect any declaration in spell memorization to appear on your private forum thread for the expedition. If you post it publically, it is assumed you shared it with the other PCs.

Mrs. Farrow fetches a small round bread loaf, but then is hesitant in it handing over after Clay explains it is for the birds. "We don't have much left... people that need it more than the birds, aye?" She seems torn, but smiles awkwardly as she turns it over anyway. "Take good care of my husband," she concludes.

The group heads out into the pasture where the children were playing. Early spring tulips grow wild here, many now trampled as evidence to the recent tumult. Clay whistles to the birds, who seem dubious and uncertain, maintaining their distance as he tosses bread. Some dare forward to steal the crumbs, but none dare more than that. Clay spends several minutes whistling to them, but to no avail. With the others standing behind him, the birds decline the young lad's whistled entreaties and fly off to another field.

Mor is excited, however, snuffling at the ground. He seems to have found a scent. Mr. Farrow watches the events impassively, simply quirking an eyebrow in silence to see what you all will determine.

Foxy O'Hare

Foxy rises early retrieving the dagger left under her pillow, pulling the odd straw from her hair. She will prepare her kit before breakfasting, tightening the bowstring cut from the tendons of hunted gazelle and practising a few lunge and parries with her scimitar, ( mercilessly stabbing one grain sack with a 'wanted' portrait pinned to it. Must have been a bad dream)

After saying goodbye to Mrs Farrow, Foxy will follow the companions to the pasture and watch the dog, teased with some of the worn cotton of the girls pick up a scent.

"We can do nought but follow this path. Mr Farrow, your labourers chased the goblins this way. This old goblin burrow that you spoke off, the one burned out by the guards. Is it far from here?" Foxy digs for information and asks about other neighbouring properties. She shows Mr Farrow the hand drawn map from the tavern and hopes he can fill in a few blanks around his place as we journey.Trombley farm, the orchards. Further west/ SW are there any distinguishing landmarks? Stone cairns, pools, waterfalls, any natural caves?

If the dog loses the scent or we feel we are going around in circles, we need a focus. At the moment I suggest that be the old goblin haunt. Unless me meet the farmhands of see some other point of interest ( smoke from another burning building, wagons, traders crossing the plain).

Speaking to Clay, "Some eyes in the skies may help spot trouble." Foxy will lead on with the dog and Mr Farrow, hoping to put some distance between them and Clay so he can converse with birds confidence.

"After the patrol woke them, Clay spoke to Foxy in the darkness..."

Foxy: zzzz....goblins...errr...zzzz, Archduke pays handsomely for goblin scalps, get me a nice dress, zzzzz, wedding dress, zzzzz, wedding. ...spurned at the altar.....dagger gets plunged several times into pillow, zzzz, sell his scalp to duke, buy goblin dress...zzzz

He accepted the loaf of bread without comment. Anything he said would likely betray his thoughts that, while she resented birds for eating a loaf of bread, she would gladly welcome home two hungry children that would require much more food.

With the birds being too skittish to draw near the farmers, Clay followed Mor, Roxy and Mr. Farrow away from the congregated people. Once at the edge of the forest, he tried again, initially whistling to the birds, drawing them nearer, then explaining that he had food in exchange for information and/or their services. Friends! We are seeking two human nestlings. They were taken by the green-skins on wolves. Can you guide us to them and warn us of possible enemies? Jays were probably the smartest in the region, but also clever and would need close watching.

As a player, I hope we end up in the burnt out lair. More chances of loot - but we have the father, and he probably won't want to turn back until he has resolution.

(The burnt-out goblin hole is on the map that Foxy copied; it is marked at #4 and is two days east, on the other side of the city.)

The dog begins tracking to the southwest, moving eagerly and urging the others to keep pace. Mr. Farrow seems to nod in confirmation. "Last of the goblins fled into the hills... seemed like that's where the wolves come back from, too." He doesn't express any particular knowledge of anything to the southwest, as that is beyond the farm and beyond what the Guard patrols.

You travel a few miles past the farm property, the scent trail coming and going but progress generally southwesterly until you come to a grove of evergreens. Clay begins whistling once more, trying to gain the attention of any birds willing to be accomplice a precocious two-legged. A tiny owl alights near him and is downright chatty. It introduces itself to Clay as Maurice, compliments Clay on his grammar, laments his usual lack of good conversationalists, and agrees amiably to assist you on your quest for the lost younglings.
Maurice the Owl.png
Maurice the Owl.png (176.36 KiB) Viewed 500 times
(I tried to capture the rolls, but then lost the post. You had a 50/50 chance of finding more birds and succeeded, got a 2 on the modified disposition roll which allowed a retainer check, which you got a 3 on. A stellar bit of luck worth mentioning. The Pygmy Owl is effectively a retainer for this Expedition, and you can roll morale to keep it beyond per the normal rules. RP with it accordingly.)
The dog is gleeful as it finds manages to find and catch a rabbit, prancing back to Clay to present his kill to his master. (Successfully foraged one man-day of food. Cook and eat it today, or add to inventory.) It is at that point, however, that you realize it wasn't the wolves he was tracking most recently. You lost the scent trail and either need to veer back onto course or backtrack. Maurice informs you of night-fires having been lit both several miles southeast and also southwest, a curiosity for him.

Foxy O'Hare

9 miles in 2 hours, is good going! Probably tired, certainly aching feet, Foxy will remove her boots for a short rest.

Foxy is dismayed when Mr Farrow corrects her map, pointing to the known goblin hole. She expected another one closer to the farm. "I don't think these goblins we are after are going there? A raiding band of goblins on the move or in a hidden niche is going to be hard to track. Wolves are virtually tireless, but carrying a weight, not that I am a wolf expert, but I estimate they'll go 15+ miles a day. But I think it unlikely they'll be based 30 miles away to raid from...so either a Nomadic goblin pack or a group based close by...Eruanna, for the sake of these two souls, guide our path." Foxy prays inaudibly.

SE night fires probably indicate travellers using the merchant road. With the dog losing the scent, unless we retrace our steps and I'm not convinced finding a clear scent is going to be easy: we have no discernible options other than press on SW. Foxy will pick one of the evergreen trees on the edge of the copse, climbing it to get a panoramic view. What can she see from the 40ft+ up?

After a break, carry on towards the SE camp fire site, stopping short to have a recce.

"Perhaps when the sunsets Clay, you could make loud wolf calls and see if we can solicit a response from any nearby pack. Might be one the goblins have trained".

Following Roxy's lead, Clay allows Asala to drink from a nearby stream before sitting on a nearby rock. He thanks Mor for his hard work, letting him know through body language and sounds that it will taste good and it would be a nice gesture if we share a few bites with our new, avian friend. Hearing Roxy's musings about the likelier-better possibility, he shrugs noncommittally. Maurice, how long do you think it would take for you to check out the fires in the southwest and then return to let us know what you see? This human had two children taken by goblins on wolves. If they are - or were - there, we can head that way. If you are willing, please be careful in your travels, friend. He turns to Roxy and Mr. Farrow to explain his request, Anything I should add to that? And how much food did the goblins take? A week's worth? A month's worth?

Stirling, as you have guessed, please feel free to relay messages to the animals through Clay. And assume that information is passed along to you.

And I thought there was going to be a second burned-out goblin hole too! Since the Mountain Camp is one day's journey to the town, it is unlikely there would be travelers camping on the road - possibly the other expedition, though... Either way, it is unlikely the goblins would camp out along the road. It seems likely the gobbos would be up in the hills with their wolves. If they got a decent supply of food, they will likely stay put for a little bit, I would hope. :?

7am to 11am is four hours. You're moving at the unencumbered speed of 2 mph for using the donkey and carrying less than 40lbs each. Most armored/encumbered groups (1/2 speed) move 1 mph, with a fleet riding horse or on a road it is 3 mph. Modifications go from there. I work in four-hour chunks, generally, and unencumbered at four hours is eight miles - the size of one hex.

You are walking 120', the bird flies 480'. If you are "searching" while moving, it is half speed and that applies to you and the bird (half speed, double encounter chances). So, we'll say in a four-hour block, it can scout one hex ahead and return, or it can fly to a target two hexes away and return expediently.

Mr. Farrow seems anxious to continue and a bit unnerved by the friendliness of the owl. When asked about the food taken, he shrugs. "Depends how much they eat and how many they are, I guess. Can't say I considered the goblin's eating habits. We should get back on course to find the others."

Mor is pleased and takes a rest. Asala munches contentedly on some grass. Roxy shimmies up a tall pine on top of the next ridge. She clambers up expertly, allowing her a good vantage to see several miles, at least across the hilltops - the vales are hidden from view in this undulating landscape. You realize you are indeed much more east than you intended, having come south instead of southwest. You are only about two miles from the merchant road, which bends south to northeast just to the east of you. The Farrow's farm is north-northeast of you, about eight miles back. You see what appears to be a circle of merchant wagons on a hilltop about five miles due south, but no movement there. Your intended course lies no more than four miles west; heading west-southwest for about 18 miles, you see the sharp foothills that Mr. Farrow indicated on the horizon that morning.

Maurice is grateful for some shared bits of rabbit and willing to go take a look, but expresses concern - it isn't the same looking out and seeing a fire in the night as it is to look for where a fire used-to-be by day. If you are somewhere that he can find you, he'll return in a few hours.

it is probably best to just had back until Morr finds the trails again. What do you think Ms. O'Hare? He keeps Maurice around until Foxy offers an opinion, not wanting to risk losing Maurice in the woods.

Foxy O'Hare

Foxy takes a good look from the tree tops, getting her bearings but also looking for signs of life. The hilltop wagons: didn't some bloke in the tavern organise a group to scavenge there?

Can Foxy see any animals on the plains, thinking creatures such as deer antelope, grazing herds?

" My opinion for what it's worth is to carry on trekking this westward direction. Hopefully we will intercept a likely scent in a few miles. No telling if it is wiser than retracing steps, but I prefer going forward. I have an idea though, if we can't find the goblins and wolves, we get them to find us. I know one way to facilitate that. It has some danger but may offer a grest chance to track their lair. We'll need to prepare a good camp and certainly we'll have need of night eyes. Keep the owl if you can stay familiar with it."

Suggestion : Press on for another couple of hours then move at a more 'scouting pace', Foxy tries to sound positive, particularly in front of Mr Farrow. "an old proverb says, 'go softly softly to catch the monkey'. After three days, the goblins will not expect us if we can locate them. I hear some bandit groups pay a high price for young 'maidens'. The goblins may be reckless but not foolish, your daughter will be kep unarmed I'm sure. Now lets' head forward ."

Foxy, Clay, and Mr. Farrow begin trekking roughly westward, a new bearing having been taken. You move cautiously, searching for the trail (half-speed). Mor bays excitedly after a few hours, the scent now recovered. You track it southwestward, through the rolling hills until you see something ahead in the grass. Approaching cautiously you find the pasture trampled by a struggle and one of the farmhands lying dead in the grass, the ground stained red where he lays, deep spear wounds in his torso and abdomen.

"That's Clive," says Mr. Farrow sorrowfully, his voice catching with grief.

The trail is visible onward even without the dog's nose - a wide swath of trampled grass leading to a cleft in the adjacent hillside, about 60 yards away.

Stirling wrote:Can Foxy see any animals on the plains, thinking creatures such as deer antelope, grazing herds?
Any large herds that they could be easily seen from several miles off? No - these are not broad, flat plains where the buffalo roam. You're in rolling foothills beneath the shadow of the forboding mountains to the south and the thick forests to the north. Also, in Foxy's experience, animals tend to be exceedingly wary in this world. There are several varieties of monster that can hunt from the sky and carry off a full-sized member of the herd, so standing around in the open in large numbers, easily visible from a distance, is a risk. Most animals do not allow themselves to be seen until a much closer vantage (as represented by encounter tables).

Foxy O'Hare

Foxy immediately draws her bow and hushes the group. Crouching low she indicates that we retreat a few hundred yards so we are out of view.

"We need to find a secure place downwind so we can tie up Asala. Maybe even behind these hills. Then we organise a watch rota, with a good view of this cleft, perhaps even from above. So we keep track of any movements. Surprise is on our side Mr Farrow, a headlong rush will only alert your daughter's captors.

Foxy asks Clay to find a suitable grove for us go make a camp. No fires, no cooking, no scented candles though. Then find a hidden niche to stake out the place. We go in at midnight under cover of darkness, find the girls and men if they live and then escape.

In preparation, Foxy will remove her chinking spurs and pass a dagger to Clay. "Cut a sharp pointy end in your stick. If any wolf leaps at you, you can brace against the impact and impale the creature. Unless you can charm them otherwise?"

A watch each of two hours. Sufficient time for us to rest, eat some sparse rations and prepare. And in a warning to Mr Farrow, " If you rush in without us, you'll give our surprise away and I won't come in to retrieve your body."
