Hey, can we keep any sniping like that in-character? Otherwise, it looks like you personally have a problem with how I'm playing Angus, which I hope isn't the case.

Thanks.

While I don't think that comment was directed at Zhym (since it called out the ranger specifically), let's do try to keep those comments in character. Given all the decisions that have to be made by the PCs, character conflict is inevitable. That's fine, and I expect it. In fact, I think it makes for more interesting RPing, especially since PCs don't have to stay in the same group in this game. There can be several adventuring parties.

But OOC comments (just like e-mail) don't easily convey tone and are prone to misunderstandings; I've seen games become nearly unmanageable because of it. So let's please try to keep PC comments in character.

I don't think this was a big deal, but I just want to nip this one in the bud.

Thanks.

No worries on my end. Angus' goals aren't necessarily mine anyway. I'd probably argue for sticking around the ghost town a while longer. But that's not the kind of person Angus is.

How cold would we expect it to get overnight, and how hard would it be to stay warm without a fire? We all have wool blankets and such by now, right? Are those enough to make it through the night?

I was wondering if this would come up...

First, the party would expect that it's going to stay right around freezing. It's cloudy and humid, so it won't get bone-chilling cold like it did a few weeks ago (in game time). Still, that is cold! I've spent quite a few nights outside on climbing/backpacking trips in that weather, and it's difficult to get good sleep even with specialized equipment.

So, with no fire, each player needs to make a CON check to see if they get enough rest to function at a high level the next day. If they have a bedroll and a wool blanket, and sleep extremely closely together, it's a 4d6 check. Items of additional warmth may give them a point or two bonus. Without a bedroll and woolen blanket, it's a 5d6 check.

Another problem is the animals. The dog and wolf are fine given their fur, but the birds and mounts aren't really equipped to deal with overnight cold. The birds could probably sleep with the PCs, but the mule and horse will have a rough time unless they have blankets too.

Edit: Failure to rest effectively means spellcasters can't memorize new spells, and to-hit and AC penalties of 2 apply the next day.

Are Arnulf, Hellebore, Hyde, and Yenny the PCs who have been at the fort before? I think Angus, Dandelion, Galan, Tempus, and the silent Lorilee (who I suspect may be about to wander off alone) are newbies. Am I forgetting anyone in the current party?

Chet was here, but is not yet returned to us. His elf-companion is new.

Last time we came, we left Yana the Cleric here to proselytize. I hope she comes back. :)

Yana is of course welcome back any time. I think Zhym's accounting of who has been here previously is correct. I don't think the Sambords are going to miss Ilfrien!

The motherboard on my Mac died Tuesday night - I will try to get an update out tomorrow or Friday, but I've been dealing with the issues that come along with that - basically, I've had to rewrite some programs I had on there for a class and it's occupying all of my time.

Man, that sucks. I'm guessing by the whole "rewrite" thing you didn't have any recent backups? :/

No recent backups...the thing was only four months old so I was a bit lax.

A lot of my game notes were on that too, so hopefully the hard drive doesn't have any issues...

Because you're on a Mac, you might think about getting a Time Capsule. Automagic backup over WiFi. Not cheap, alas, but I love it: if I'm on my home network, I'm backing up regularly without even having to connect a USB drive.

I had a fantastic chat-based game end abruptly many many years ago because the DM's hard drive crashed, so I'm a big fan of DMs backing up their systems. :)

I'm really curious how Know Alignment will be explained in-character. Is alignment something our PCs know about?

Also: Jobin carries a big sword and can cast Know Alignment. Innnteresting. I don't think dual-classing allows a cleric to use blades, so either he's a cleric of a god that allows clerics to use blades, he has a magic item that lets him detect alignment, or AleBelly lets dual classes human F/Cs use blades. Either way, Jobin just got more intriguing.

ETA: Oh, wait. I think I've got it.
OSRIC 2.2 PDF, p.25 wrote:Unlike multi-class characters, dual-classed characters cannot perform the functions of several different classes simultaneously. So, for example, an elven fighter/magic user could cast arcane spells while wearing armour, but a human dual-classed fighter and magic user would have to remove his or her armour to do the same thing.
That's why Jobin handed his sword to one of his men before casting.

Also: If we don't want to hold up the flow of action too much, I can go ahead and post Angus's reaction to Jobin wanting to Know Alignment. I just figured that Angus hasn't had reason to recognize what's going on when that spell's being cast.

Neither Hellebore or I knew what was going on. ;) She figured she would make a show of trust.
