Torchbearer Game
Torchbearer Game
Greetings! I recently discovered Torchbearer, and after reading through the rulebook, I decided I really want to play. I'm brand new to this game, obviously, but I've played other tabletops, such as Pathfinder and Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. I'm looking for a GM and some players, as I would like to play.
Edit: (Copy of post below)
I am now looking for players to play in a Torchbearer campaign, but I've still never actually played the game. I've just read the basic rulebook a few times. I feel confident enough with the system to run a game however.
Game System: Torchbearer
Number of Players: 3-5
House Rules: None; I would like to learn the system before changing it. I am open to minor modifications though.
Posting Speed: At least twice a week, hopefully more.
Who Rolls: I plan on letting the players take care of rolling their own dice.
Campaign Setting: I would like to run the dungeon included in the basic rulebook, and then move into the Dread Crypt of Skogenby. After this, if the players would like to continue, we would move into a custom adventure. Depending on how busy I am while we're playing, there may be a hiatus between the end of the published adventures and my custom adventure, but it won't last more than a week or two.
Feel free to ask any questions. I can usually post pretty often.

Hello Faolan7!
I'd say jump in, but you already have!
Please be advised that your first two posts have to be moderated, after that you'll be fine to post whenever.

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Re: Torchbearer Game
I would happily play (but not run) a Torchbearer game. If this picks up interest, please PM me.
Re: Torchbearer Game
Love me some Torchbearer. I was concerned that it wouldn't translate well to PbP, particularly with the "Describe to Live" ethos (players describe their actions in minute detail until the GM decides that a test is required), but I found that it actually worked really well--the rule gives players a chance to narrate what they're doing without bogging down.
I played a game that made it partway through the first adventure. If there's more interest I'm in.

Re: Torchbearer Game
I know this is an oldish thread, but for what it is worth, I would also jump into a TB game if it was being run. Though it can be harsh - particularly for a whiner like me
- I like how rough the game is. I also like the rules for skill advancement.

Edited to take up less space, I got post happy.

Re: Torchbearer Game
This might be a repost since it would be my second post, and I'm not sure if I can find where my unmoderated posts are. Anyway, I know this is an old post, but I'm not sure if I should be making a new topic or just post here again, so I'll play it safe and post here.

Re: Torchbearer Game
I am certainly interested if you still need folks. Quite intrigued by the system but have never looked through the rules. The concept is fantastic and I would love to try it. Not sure if I could make every day postings while school is in but if your initial minimum is 2x /week then I can make that and likely more.
I can get the rules if I'm in (saw pdf on drivethrurpg though it costs not much less than book on Amazon) but want to ask if there are any cheaper sources just in case. I'm fine by being lead by you on rules if that's what you prefer though I would want to see the rulebook regardless just to be able to absorb a new rule system based on a novel concept. And I will not be peeking at the adventure. (You only get one shot at your first time). Just let me know. And thank you for stepping up on the DM mantle. Always appreciated.

Re: Torchbearer Game
As of right now, you're the only person interested. I still need to PM the other guys. I found the rulebook on a torrent, but that's not the best way to get rulebooks :/ .
As for stepping up, there's no need to thank me. I've been itching to play, and I'm comfortable enough in DMing that I should be able to run a decent game on a new system.

Re: Torchbearer Game
I'm still interested in any efforts of this type.
The game I'm running is time intensive, but I can commit to a twice-a-week game as well.
Will you be allowing classes from the extra PDFs? Bonus Classes, or Denizens of the Dark? (both are free on the developer's website, I believe, so I reposted here.)

Re: Torchbearer Game
As long as I can get a source, feel free to use extra stuff. If it's not from the developer, I would like to verify it first though, so any third-party stuff (if it exists) or homebrew.
Those bonus classes look like they'd be a cool addition Marullus.
Edit: Also, I sent PMs to the other two potential players who posted when I was looking for a DM, but currently we have 3 players interested (One PMed me), so we might be able to get started soon!

Re: Torchbearer Game
Thanks for the PM-poke. I don't usually check this part of the forum since I am already have 4 active games. But A TB game? Definitely in.
I haven't ever looked at either of the stock games, though I did read a few of the game play-by-plays and a lot of questions on the Burning Wheel forum. I haven't ever looked at the additional classes, but I might be interested. I am happy to play any class to fill out the party's needs.
I'll keep checking this thread for updates. And thanks for being willing to DM this!

Re: Torchbearer Game
Wow. 4 active games? That's quite a lot to keep track of. This one shouldn't be too hard to manage though. I'm only looking for at least two posts a week.
Mechanics-wise (hehe), the stock games are going to be the same, but I might re-flavor/re-fluff it to better fit to my custom campaign's plan. It doesn't really matter a whole lot if you have seen them, but as coil23 says, "You only get one shot at your first time".
Again, there's no need to thank me for DMing this. I've been itching to play, and I'm comfortable enough in DMing to run the new system, but since I've never actually played, I'm just hoping this doesn't crash. I honestly prefer DMing to being a player, but mixing it up is always nice. It's a lot less work to be a player, at least before we actually play.

Re: Torchbearer Game
To be fair, two of those games are in the same sandbox, so it is more a matter of remembering what each character doesn't know, since they are on opposite sides of the game-world. The third is progressing at a snail's pace lately and is a pretty straight forward dungeon crawl - not too, too much to keep track of yet. The fourth just started and i have a suspicion the character will be dead pretty quickly. and 3/4 of them are using the Lab Lord basic rules, so I am getting more comfortable with the mechanics.
If this gets up and going with a promise of a lengthy campaign, I'd let one of those others slip to the side.

Re: Torchbearer Game
Ah. I see. I'm unfamiliar with Lab Lord, but three characters ought to get you comfortable with the system pretty quick
. The sandbox thing sounds pretty confusing though. Good luck with that!
As long as interest keeps up, and I can manage the new system, this campaign will hopefully last a good long time! Hopefully.

Re: Torchbearer Game
One thing that worked well in the TB game Marullus and I were in last year on this site was that we didn't wait to receive helping dice. Instead, the player making the roll decided if they wanted any help, and if so, looked at the other character sheets and then described how the character was helping. In the end, people usually offered suggestions for how their character would help anyhow, but if someone's activity was low, the game wasn't slowed down as a result of that.
Just a thought.

Re: Torchbearer Game
That's a really good idea. I knew we would have to do something like that, I just hadn't figured out how to do it yet. How did you guys do beginning/end of session rewards? With a play-by-post, there aren't distinct sessions really, so I'm not sure how we would do that.
Re: Torchbearer Game
at the end of every round of posting?

Re: Torchbearer Game
XD. You guys would never need to worry about fate, persona, or nature.coil23 wrote:at the end of every round of posting?![]()
Also, since we have three people interested currently, I'll probably keep this open for a week or two longer to see if Enoch and sivvard (We've been PMing) reply. Then we can get started!
