Chat Function?

#1 Post by Alethan »

ToniXX,

There isn't any way to add a chat function to the boards, is there? Just thinking out loud...

I know that there are chat plug-ins for these forums, but I don't know much about it. I can check it out and get back to you guys.

Did you have anything in mind? I know that people play by chat (something I don't think I could do, but I've never tried).

Thought if it was possible, then it might be fun to try and do a combat in-party every now and again via chat instead of posting. Not really interested enough to do it in another chat function... just wanted to see if it was possible here.

I did a little research on this subject. I found that the chat functions that are available have one or both of the following issues: They are either not supported by the most recent version of these forums or they are somewhat complex to install. My main fear with the latter is that I'll mess something up which will then bork-up the forums, leaving us all hanging with our games, and me scrambling to fix the forums (if I'd be able to fix them at all). So, I'd rather not risk it unless we really feel that we need this feature.

+1

Was a damn noble idea nonetheless, Al! 8-)

Always got the chat lounge over at DF. I'm hoping to get skype (sp?) or whatever it is someday. Damn laptops got a built-in camera already to boot!

Skype is free if you have video and audio. I've never explored it's usage (outside of work) but I think that would be fun every once in a while too.

The thing about PbP is neither I (nor my players) have to worry about the "time" to play. You play when you can, as much as you can, in whatever timezone you are at. I think that's one of the coolest ways to play, and get to know folks I wouldn't otherwise have.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Agreed Ron, I don't think I could commit to a skype game, even if it was a one-off deal. A weekly scheduled game would prolly be an issue, hell, even once a month.

I was just thinking it would be fun to try and coordinate a chat combat every now and again (like once every six months).

Seems like something so infrequent would be possible.

Have an aversion to skype... My MIL tries to skype with us so she can watch Finley and it's like she's using a tin can and waxed string. No, unwaxed string... horrible. And I hate doing tech support over the phone to try and figure out why it's so bad on her end.

Heh. I once skyped with Dave Newton the co-creator of Mythus, and my laptop at the time didn't have a built in mic. But I would love to get in a monthly face-to-face game, but surprisingly (being so close to Philadelphia) it's been impossible. Stuart Marshall (OSRIC co writer) runs a weekly Giants game. He keeps inviting me and you think Saturday at noon would be an okay time but embarrassingly I have yet to make a game, and they're in G3 now I think. But they use G+ to video chat And the Vimeo recordings are awesome. It seems to work well, the only issues being individual hardware.
I certainly wouldn't mind playing face to face with a few of you dudes. :D Theres a bunch of you that I feel like I'd have a fantastic time with. But I'm cool with our PbP too, having a fantastic time there already!

skype works ok, some lag based on connectivity or hardware. But, if you can pause for a few and allow the tech to catch you can enjoy the conversation. I skype with my daughter 1000 miles away, it's better than the phone!!!

I might be convinced to participate in skype based activities, provided it works with the schedule.
