Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
Do we have anyone that would be interested in chatting via IRC? I have seen posts about chat plugins for the forum and the difficulties around it, so we should see alternatives. If there is interest, I wouldn't mind finding us a place on an IRC network to hang. What say ye? We could kick it old school, since we seem to all be into that sort of thing around here

Sounds interesting. But please s'plain to this old country social worker - IRC?
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Basically a chat room. Some people on the RPOL site run games on specific days with it as you can get a lot more done in a game via chat then PbP format.

I've never tried IRC but what about Roll20 or Google+ Hangout? Both of those have dice rollers and other gaming stuff integrated with them. I have used both of them, briefly, and both seemed to work well. They do have the ability for video chat but you don't need to use that feature.

Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
I love both of those platforms, but they aren't really persistent. meaning: someone has to setup a Roll20 or Hangout "Session". With a chatroom or something it's "omnipresent" where people can come in and chat on a whim without having to be "invited".
Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
Im all for hangouts or something persistent to run games but I think for talking the forums work fine just post more frequently lol.

Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
So Mithrander turned me onto a chat solution that is current and has a very low impact on the forums. Per others here, I don't know if this will be used much, but it was so easy to set up I figured we could try it out and see what happens.
On the header of each page, in the upper right, there's a link to the chat area. That link has a number that tells you how many peeps are in the chat, and if you hover over the link, it will list the forum names of those in chat.
Post your feedback about this new feature here.

Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
I would advise making the announcement that the chat service is up on a dedicated, sticky thread with an appropriate title like "UA Now Has Chat Service!" or something like that, so folks catch on to the news.

Holy Bleep! We've got a chat room(s) here now?!

Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
I agree with Vargr (can I do that as a Mod?) but also, is there a way to get rid of all the dead games as "channels"?
Not critical, but as we are growing, it makes tons more channels than are needed.

Not sure about the former.

We're SUPPOSED to be able to do the latter, but, thus far, I've not been successful in getting it to work properly.
EDIT: Oh, hey, it's working now!

Re: Chat Plugin Alternative -> IRC
rredmond, you should be able to create a new thread under any topic but the News one. That one has Admin-only editing rights, I believe. And it looks like Mods can now sticky such threads.Vargr1105 wrote:I would advise making the announcement that the chat service is up on a dedicated, sticky thread with an appropriate title like "UA Now Has Chat Service!" or something like that, so folks catch on to the news.
But I would use a title other than "UA Now Has Chat Service". We shouldn't announce UA features on this site. I don't know if Unearthed Arcanea really does have chat services, in any case.

Maybe something like "US Now Has Chat Service"? Or even spell out "Unseen Servant"...

Good idea, and I'll do this in a bit. I'll post it in the News section.Vargr1105 wrote:I would advise making the announcement that the chat service is up on a dedicated, sticky thread with an appropriate title like "UA Now Has Chat Service!" or something like that, so folks catch on to the news.
There is a way of getting rid of dead games in the channel section. I'll see if I can sort that out this weekend.
Thanks, as usual guys, for all of your help, input and support!
