PbP Newb, here -- looking to play some 2nd Ed.

#1 Post by mithrandir138 »

Greetings, all. Here it goes ---

Real Name: Chris
Age: 35
Gender: Dude
Profession: Professional Network Security Guy/Computer Curmudgeon since 1996
Music: All kinds (but prejudiced against country and modern pop/hiphop/rap -- it all sounds the same and shitty)
Worldview: Why does it happen? Because it happens - ROLL THE BONES
Spouse: Married to a Zoologist/Supermom who is currently back in school to be a Occupational Therapist (How'd that happen?)
Location: Tennessee (Eastern/US Timezone)

Gaming:
I am a newbie to play-by-post gaming, in fact, I just thought it would be a good idea to start doing PbP yesterday. It's been a while since I have played a 2e game, so I am rusty, but I have a certain love for it. RPGs have been a big part of my 35 years on this rock, and I can never find enough time or people to play with. I live in an area where people are mostly playing either Magic the Gathering (and are 15-20 years my junior, which wouldn't generally be a problem but I don't want to be "that guy") or Warhammer/Horde/mini-of-the-week, and I am just not interested in that scene (too much time, space, and money involved). I am guessing that this format will be more conducive to my lifestyle. I have tried doing Skype games, or just using Maptool with a voice chat program, and I don't always have the time to sit down for 3+ hours every week on a set schedule.

Being a game geek, I read and buy (too many) game books and stuff for fun (and OCD, I gotta have them all!) because it interests me, so I feel I have a lot of exposure to a few tabletop RPGs. My daughter is 10 and my son is 6, I have tried to get them into it, but I can't get them to hang out with each other for too long. My daughter is really interested, but one-on-one games are hard to run, my son loves the idea too, but he can't sit still (and can't stand not messing with his sister) long enough to crawl a dungeon.

As far as games go, hit me up if you ever have a urge to run one of these games, or need an extra player:
AD&D 2e (THAC0 lovers, represent!)
Pathfinder
D&D 3.5
any of the "OSR Dungeons & Dragons simulacrums"
Savage Worlds
Starwars D6
Hackmaster 4e

Welcome to the Unseen Servant Forum, Mith!

Several 2e games going on right now, so you could always look into getting on a waiting list.

Curious minds (well... Mine, anyway) want to know... Why no love for anything older than 2e? Or is that just what you started with?

Oh, I have love for the older AD&D and even OD&D, and have no problems playing them. I guess it's nostalgia more than anything that draws me to 2e, but for the most part, as long as you aren't using kits, etc. I think 1e and 2e are pretty similar.

Welcome! You've come to the right place. As Alethan said, there are a few 2e games here. Check the 'looking for games and players' forum. Heck, if you're okay with 1e, you're set too. Also, in case you didn't know, OSRIC is just a rehash of 1e rules so that publishers could publish material that is essentially 1e friendly, without directly saying so, since WoTC doesn't like that. So, if you see 'OSRIC' on these forums, that's what it is.

I started playing in a 2e group and agree with this. Kits and the whole 2.5e (the black 'option' books) ruin it for me. Otherwise, 2e is just 1e with minor tweaks and a little better organization of the rules.

Welcome to the forums. Everyones really friendly and helpful so you picked a good place to start. Joseph Goodman should hire me on as a marketer but I have to encourage you to check out Dungeon Crawl Classics if you enjoy old achool D&D. Its basically just like old school but much easier to run with a load of cool new ideas to boot.

Cheers,

So I like Goodman Games, and I have looked at DCC, but it turns be off because of the requirement to buy zocchi dice, it just seems silly to me.

The beauty of rolling into a game with a laptop or playing PbP is dice generators work just as well with none of the cost. :D

They also explain ways to make the same rolls with other dice but I do agree it's one of the minor grievances I have with the game.

THAC0 is in the 1E DMG. ;)
Love the enthusiasm!!!!!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.
