hello i am user "idiot"
hey just started an account to say that i found the forum by searching for people's quest logs for playing through tomb of horrors, read both the party 1 and party 2 threads in your tomb of horrors forum, loved both of them, thoroughly entertaining and planning on keeping up with your game as you continue it. amazing it's still going, both parties, after 2 years
you guys must have some kind of policy about players just going out and reading the module, right? like players aren't supposed to do that?

Re: hello i am user "idiot"
welcome! yes, the honor system is strong here--but folks play modules all the time here that they know, and there's a lot of integrity in the player base around that kind of thing.

Welcome and perhaps but i don't think we really do that it is more of the honor code really as far as I can say.

There are not any cheating policies that I'm aware of. No official forum policies, in any case, regarding modules. Your mileage on this subject will vary from DM to DM. Some don't care if you roll real dice in front of your computer or use the forum roller. Others will require you to set up a character tied to their campaign in the forum dice roller and link all rolls. Some will make all of the game rolls for everyone, eliminating the need to question the verity of rolls.idiot wrote: you guys must have some kind of policy about players just going out and reading the module, right? like players aren't supposed to do that?
I think a general request from DMs running a module is that you not be familiar with it when you sign up. Or, at least, that you haven't been through the module recently and have little, if any, recollection of it. I don't know if I've ever seen a DM specifically indicate that it was OK to buy the module and read along with or ahead of the game you are playing in, but I think it is an unspoken rule that every DM expects players to NOT do that.
I imagine it would become quite clear, if you weren't careful with your actions, that you had a module in front of you if you are too "lucky" in finding hidden stuff and figuring out challenging puzzles or avoiding dangerous traps. It would, of course, be easy enough for the DM to trip you up by making minor changes to each room as they go along, to counter that.
More importantly, though, I think such an act would be a serious detriment to YOUR enjoyment of the game. For one thing, you completely remove the sense of the unknown, the elevated level of excitement you get when you find out what is behind the next door or when a trap springs and you suddenly have to make a saving throw. You'd also get bored, I think, always knowing exactly what is up ahead for the party.
Besides... surviving a module when you have the module in front of you isn't a challenge in the least bit; it's just a game of dice where you know the outcome if you can get enough good rolls. And it isn't even that if the DM isn't controlling/monitoring the rolling to any degree.

Honestly, I still have my doubts as to the legitimacy of this post. I OK'd it with some hesitation. It smells to me of an active player making a fake user ID to pose such a question because they think another player is in a module-based game (presumably the Tomb of Horrors) and has the actual module in their possession, because of actions they are taking or the astounding good luck they have with avoiding traps.
Before anyone in the TOH game gets their feathers ruffled, I don't follow it since I bowed out during the first game stall/DM transition, which was within a month or so of startup, so I have no idea if that is the case; it is purely supposition on my part.
If this is a legitimate new person to the forum, and you are interested in playing in a game or two, then you are most welcome on the site! But I would highly recommend you discuss options with ToniXX, the site admin, about changing your user ID to something... well, to something else more becoming of a gaming forum User ID.
If not, if this is the former, then know that we DO have a forum policy against creating multiple user accounts. And in that case I would highly suggest we see zero activity from this User ID from this point on. There are better ways, more proper ways, to address such issues and you should seek them out.

You know, that never occurred to me. Magical mod powers activate!
I think the surprise thing is less of an issue with some modules: Keep on the Borderlands gets a lot of replay love, but then again it's not the secret-knowledge-fest that ToH is...

Re: hello i am user "idiot"
haha wow, no dude i am a legit new user. if it helps u feel more convinced, run a whois on the ip i posted my first post from (this board is phpbb so i think admins and maybe moderators will have a whois button on each post they can click on for this info), it's in the michigan residential comcast ip block (my house), which would be pretty unusual for a proxy ip. the whois on the ip for this post is my work, also in detroit. should be able to check that at least the first one is a unique ip. 2nd one probably is too unless somebody else at my work is also on this board, which seems unlikelyAlethan wrote: Honestly, I still have my doubts as to the legitimacy of this post. if an admin wants to change my user ID to something else, that's fine with me
Re: hello i am user "idiot"
anyway i wasn't thinking of joining in any games, just of telling u guys how much i enjoyed reading your TOH threads, but maybe i'll give one of your games a shot. thanks for the welcomes, and thanks for answering my question about players reading the module!
Re: hello i am user "idiot"
Apologies! Hopefully no offense was taken. I'm just the suspicious sort, if you must know. And it WAS a bit of an odd first post.
Also, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff we see.
Or maybe you would...
Glad to see you are a real person. Of course, my response to your question was completely on the up-and-up, in any case. I suspect (because I'm the aforementioned suspicious sort) it occasionally happens, but not to any level where it has been discussed in great detail or discourse.
Feel free to keep your forum name as you want; it was just a suggestion, if you intended on playing in any games.
Cheers, and welcome to the Unseen Servant!

Welcome, idiot! Did I just violate the "no name-calling" rule? I can't tell!

Hail and well met, idiot!
(As AB stated, that does come off sounding... amiss??)
Regardless, welcome aboard!
... and now that we're like 95% sure you're a real person, we're glad to have you, too!
