Testing the waters

#1 Post by Bhart »

I've been considering running a game but can't decide what to do. So my first question for everyone is what system are you most interested in?

From among that selection I am only passingly familiar with AD&D1e.

Hackmaster I am curious about but know chargen is much complicated.

5E playtest I am not interested in.

Ok so 1E is the obvious favorite. Next question...

Of all of the classic modules published by TSR, which would you be most interested in playing?

I have never played a known module, at least where I was aware of it. Any sounds as good as the others to me. One note is that if you play one, you should randomize it little, to throw off the players who have seen it before.
Dandelion - female half-orc beautyqueen in training (The Lone City in the Wildlands) OSRIC
Halfpint - female halfling badgirl wannabe (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL
Mark'd - charismatic human fighter (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL

It would be nice to start at the very beginning with N4 Treasure Hunt by Aaron Allston

N4 is a good one. I ran my Friday night group through it a few months ago. Any others?

Nice! I don't own it, but I caught a blurb about N4 on some message board a month or so ago and thought it sounded really cool!

I personally tend to not enjoy participating in published materials, but figured N4 would be just obscure enough that it might be worth trying when I was considering what to do when I launched my own game (the fact that I don't own N4 is what ultimately led me to run a custom game instead). While I am already stretched beyond capacity and wouldn't actually be able to participate (despite my interest in doing so), I would definitely lurk if N4 does get run.

If the GM is putting a wide selection of classical modules at our disposal I think we could do better than playing 0-level characters.

A case could be made for "starting at the very beginning" but we should be realistic. Most PbP games do not last long enough to finish the adventure, let alone going through a sequence of modules while leveling up.

What level range does the GM prefer to run? If it is all the same then we are spoiled for choice. Let me see what catches my eye...

C1 Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan
C2 Ghost Tower of Inverness
I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City
I2 Tomb of the Lizard King
N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile Blog
R1 To the Aid of Falx
RPGA3 The Forgotten King or C4 To Find a King
S2 White Plume Mountain
S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
T1 Village of Hommlet
Any of the UK modules except UK (which I am running in these forums)

But if the Vox Populi is really set on N1 I'm game anyway.

All excellent choices Vargr. My favorites from that list are c1, c2, i1, and s2.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Tomb of Horrors. Though it is so well known it would have to be altered or I'd have to gather a group of players who have never played it!

I think people make a little too much of 'knowing' a module if they've played it....in my experience; unless somebody's DM'ed a module multiple times; most players might have some great memories of a module they've played; but they don't necessarily remember every little detail of what's in each room, etc. Particularly if the module being played was last played YEARS ago....:)

In addition; I think good roleplayers can play the same module several times as different characters and NOT use thier 'meta-game' knowledge inappropriately....though, again...the longer the time in between sessions of the module, the better! :)

That all said; I certainly love any number of classic modules; in particular I've always wanted to play C1....and while I own Tomb of Horrors, I've never played it and would LOVE the chance!

Ok I've come to a decision. I'm going to run C1 The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan.
I will be running it tournament style. We will not be using the 2hour time limit of course or the 3 pre-gen characters, but it will be fast paced!!

I'm looking for a group of 6 players who are not afraid of character death!

Who's in?

I'm in...though, I must confess to mixing up C1 and C2....the module I've always really wanted to play is C2 Ghost Tower of Inverness....DOH!

C1 looks pretty cool though, so I'm definitely down to play! :)
