00. Intro: Jareth, Kaltar, Ewell [Comp +1, saalaria, onlyme]

#1 Post by dmw71 »

Two player groups have officially met:

Ewell observes the situation and responds...
Ahh, yes. That is how it appears to be. I consider myself an honorable fellow. I certainly did not mean to accuse, simply inquiring. I would not forgive myself for falling into the wrong lot you see...It simply would not do. I had an encounter just an hour back with a tall armored creature who had chained underlings. Didnt want to see that it was you doing the chaining.

He raises his hand in a more jovial greeting.
My name is Ewell. I've come from Alton, born and raised.

He looks at the creatures working to free the wolf. In returning his head back to the human, he concludes...
How do you hold up, once he is freed? Are you able to continue your fighting? I can't do much healing, but I can skewer 'em for you if requested.

---

Flushed with his success and clearly with his blood up , Kaltar offers:
"the time for talking is past - we certainly don't want the wolf loose if we can help it"
As he turns and moves to engage the goblin seeming to be doing the most untying

***

Three of the goblins have moved from working at the actual restraint to calming the beast itself, leaving a single goblin to work on freeing it. The wolf, obviously well trained by these goblins, has one focus: Eliminate the intruders!

---

Here's the situation:

All four goblins are going to be fully occupied during this first round (rounds reset with a new encounter). You are all under the impression that the wolf will attack anyone of you that gets close enough, meaning an attempted attack on a goblin will likely draw an attack from the wolf. A lengthy weapon (e.g. spear or lance) will be able to reach a target without penalty.

I will need declared actions and initiative rolls from each of you. If attacking, also provide your attack and damage rolls.

And trust me, things are set to get even more interesting very, very soon.
;)

Before I act I just want to know, how close am I to my spear. Close enough to grab and attack or do I lose a round in getting it?

Sorry, you did already ask that. Yes, you can grab and attack with it this round.

Understood Kalter. Dont you worry, now. Nothing to worry about. Just makes it more fair if he is loose.

Questions: Modified initiative or simple? Are they occupied this round, giving us a free attack round? lance attack without penalty means the wolf cant attack?

Always modified, unless I indicate otherwise.
onlyme wrote:Are they occupied this round, giving us a free attack round?
The goblins only action this round will be attending to the wolf.
onlyme wrote:lance attack without penalty means the wolf cant attack?
The wolf is potentially able to attack this round. It can't at the moment, due to your all being out of its reach, but if anyone should enter a space where it can reach you, it very much looks forward to sinking its teeth into the intruder(s)! ;)

Modified initiative (using lance): [1d10+6] = 5+6 = 11

Once it is Ewell's turn... He will yell out to the goblins, "Do not release that wolf when it is so enraged. Cowering behind a beast you abuse is no way to fight.

He then commences to half-ass thrusting his lance at the "untying" goblin, more so in an attempt to scare him away from the job.based on the roll, this is pretty accurately described...

lance to hit (+3 str bonus): [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4 , lance damage on foot 1d6 (+5 Cav and str bonus): [1d6+5 ] = 5+5 = 10

Without warning there is a huge crash off to your left! Everyone -- player and monsters alike -- instinctively looks in that direction. Unbeknownst to you, further left from your current position is a rope which leads up the side of the cliff to the ridge. At the bottom of this rope lie two motionless goblins, one partially on top of the other. A relatively large rock, like a small pumpkin, comes to stop not far from these prone bodies.

Not sure if you needed init or not (am on my phone so not easy to jump around)
In case you do :
Mace Initiative [1d10+7] = 1+7 = 8
Then the attack on untying gobbo:

Mace Action To Hit [1d20] = 10 Dam [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2

Is there a bonus for behind etc?

Mr DM... Can you confirm the timing of the cliff-diving goblins show? Did that happen during our turn, before or after? i.e. are you waiting on Ewell to make some reaction move to that event, or just Jareth to announce his original move before ending that round?

"cliff-diving goblins show" That's awesome! LOL

Their plummet took place during the current round and I am just allowing Jareth to state his actions before posting the results of the round.

Jareth picks up his spear and attacks the wolf.
I will draw its attention, try not to let them unleash it.
He yells to his companions.

Jareth attacks from the farthest range he can, trying to avoid entering the attack range of the wolf.

Attack #1:
[1d20] = 17+2 = 19

Damage:
[1d6+3] = 5+3 = 8

While Ewell does his best to avoid the wolf while attempting to probe the goblin working at the wolf's restraints, the wolf believes it spots an opportunity and unleashes a vicious bite attack at Ewell's arm. Ewell, sensing the attack, pulls his arm back at the last instant and the wolf slightly miscalculates its attack, reaching the end of its leash before its vice-like jaws were able to latch on to Ewell's arm. However, the defensive move by Ewell causes his attempt to delay the goblin to fail as well.

Kaltar takes advantage of the wolf's preoccupation and swings his mace at the goblin working the release. The cunning goblin must have sensed its impending doom because it ducks out of the way at the last possible instant, preserving its life for at least another few minutes.

Jareth, however, quickly retrieves his spear and yells to his newfound companions to stop the goblin working the release at all costs. He targets the wolf directly and his piercing attack catches the wolf cleanly, drawing both blood and a yelp, but also inciting even further rage from the beast as it prepares to carry on the fight!

***

I will need declared actions, initiatives and attack/damage rolls from all for the next round.

Okay - Kaltar is still on the untying goblin, trusting Jareth to take the wolf out:

Mace Initiative [1d10+7] = 10+7 = 17

Mace Action To Hit [1d20] = 13 Dam [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2

Ewell sees that the wolf has clearly entered into a fight with him. Being the most powerful of the enemy, Ewell will focus on him.

lance to hit (+3 str bonus): [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19 , lance damage on foot 1d6 (+5 Cav and str bonus): [1d6+5 ] = 5+5 = 10

Modified initiative (using lance): [1d10+6] = 9+6 = 15

Jareth recovers from his first attack and immediately targets the wolf again from maximum range.

Attack:
[1d20] = 4+2= 6

I dont think damage will be necessary.

The three goblins previously attempting to subdue the wolf have abandoned that task and have gone on the offensive, brandishing short swords. The fourth goblin continues its efforts to release the wolf.

---

Not waiting to be completely freed from its restraints, the wolf acts first, once again lunging at Ewell. It manages to find a vulnerability and sinks its razor-sharp teeth into Ewell's flesh (D6). Kaltar, focused on the goblin working the restraints, gets caught off-guard by the first of the three attacking goblins and feels a stabbing pain as a goblin blade finds its mark (D4). The remaining two attacking goblins work to flank Jareth who finds the little creatures to be much quicker and accurate with their strikes than he expected. The goblin to his left only leaves a nick (D1), but the goblin to his right is more effective in its stabbing attempt (D3).

Jareth, determined to focus on the most powerful enemy, turns his attention to the wolf. He stabs at the ferocious beast with his spear but misses wide, clearly distracted by the second cut he received which took place at the same time as his attack attempt.

Ewell decides to work with Jareth in the elimination of the biggest threat. The tip of his lance catches the wolf solidly and the large animal yelps and appears visibly hurt, but appears to be capable of fighting on.

The fourth goblin manages to free the wolf… mere seconds before being brained by Kaltar's mace. It falls dead, but a satisfied grin is seen on its face at it crumbles to the ground.

----

ooc: Though not my fault exactly, I feel compelled to apologize for the unbelievably fortunate attack rolls (16, 17, 19, 18) against you guys this past round. I do not see a repeat occurrence of that any time soon so don't get discouraged.

Feeling the pain from his three wound Jareth throws his spear at the wolf and once again brandishes his long sword.

Attack:
(Attack pending, dice roller is frozen! I have tried a few times, will wait an hour and try again!)
[1d20] = 20+2= 22

For the record I swear to god I couldn't get the die roller to unfreeze. I'd hit roll and it would just sit and sit. I tried 3 or 4 times to no avail. And now a natural 20. DONT JUDGE ME!

Damage:
[1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7
Locked
