The party and monsters act simultaneously.
Gaerys and the dragon engage once again. And once again Gaerys wounds the wyrm with a pair of slashes. The dragon strikes with its claws and jaws. A talon finds its way into a gap in the ranger's armor and tears away a chunk of meat, but Gaerys parries away the other claw attack and, ever the wiser, sidesteps the strike of its jaws.
Natural 20...on a 1d4 attack
Gaerys: 8 damage
In its fearsome eyes, Gaerys sees just a hint of surprise, even fear. The intelligent beast knows when it is overmatched, living amongst giants and all. But perhaps its ego and bloodlust may overtake its sense of self-preservation?
Lorath does his best to slip away from the giant while casting. Unfortunately, the giant swings heavily with its club, just as Lorath starts to pull away. The horizontal swing connects with Lorath's head, bursting it like a melon. The spellsword's headless, lifeless body thumps onto the ground.
26 DAMAGE!!! LORATH DEAD!!!!
Gaerys hears the sudden silence and thump of his comrade's body falling. The experienced warrior knows all too well what happened in that cave....he is now alone.
Declare Actions!
Lorath: DEAD
Gaerys: 28 damage
Dragon: 26 damage

Re: Back at the Safe House (G2 - thread 2)
Hearing Lorath fall, Gaerys quickly assesses the situation. His tactical advice just led to another ally's death. He really needs to work on the whole leadership thing.
But he has no time to dwell on that now. As much as he'd love to defeat both a dragon and a cloud giant—and with Giantbane, he might even be able to do so and survive—discretion is the better part of not getting killed. He takes his potion of diminution and quickly drinks it. He'll look to run past the dragon and out of the rift if possible, hoping that his cloak and boots in conjunction with his diminished size will provide some level of concealment for his escape.

Gaerys acts quickly...before either of his opponents can even move. He gulps down the potion, shrinks to a tiny size and makes a dash around the dragon in his tiny form. The dragon manages to snap at Gaerys with its jaws, but swallows only snow.
Good plan + big initiative win = quick escape.
Outside the Rift, Gaerys manages to "swim" through the snow to the Safe House. There is no sign of him being followed.
Gaerys arrives at the Safe House. He greets his fellows, but unfortunately bears news about the fate of Lorath.
Steeled by the grim news, the party returns to its plans for the morrow...preparing, healing, and planning.

Vorsyin takes stock of the news of Lorath's death. Both of you should have been more cautious although the arrival of the dragon was an unforeseen possibility. You are fortunate to have escaped alive brother.
To the group he continues We appear to be at am impasse. The enemy are too strong to attempt a full on attack as we did the first time. The enemy is too vigilant to attempt to sneak in as we have learned. We must find a way to bring the advantage to us.
Gaerys are we sure how many entrances there are? Perhaps if some of us could get the attention of the giants a second group could enter the caves unnoticed.

"Alas poor Lorath....I didn't know him too well. Tis a shame we must not let his death go unpunished. This only encourages me more to deal with these Giants."
