March 27, 1 VC - 8:00am

The expedition to do a little bit of exploring and maybe look around and then return pretty quickly left Vaul first thing on March 27, so that Wendall could honor his commitment to get measured for some fancy tailor-made clothes for the festival.

Wish them luck--a lot can happen on a breezy afternoon stroll!

You might as well give me the gold coin now, Varas. I'm the dwarf with the drinking corner, after all, laughs Dorvar. I think it is cute that you guys believe you can win. The real winner, however, will be Ghrym, with all the money to be spent in his tavern.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Wendall's party returns after a peaceful two day journey out into the wild, empty handed but healthy.

Wendall enters the tavern with his head hung low.

Hi Gryhm, one ale please. I'm guessing you already heard that my first formal outing as leader was completely uneventful and useless eh?

Martin

Martin comes up behind Wendall and claps him soundly on the back. "But at least we all came back alive, Wendall, we all came back alive. That is something, isn't it? And we found that a large band of goblins was heading northeast. that could be important information."

Ghrym snickers. "Aye, you've discovered vital information about where goblins can be found, ha ha ha!"

Varas chuckles. "Well, let's just enjoy ourselves, shall we? Ghrym, I believe I'm paid up in ale and lodging until Harrowing. So I'll have one too. And please one for our new friend Martin. He might be light on coin after a treasure-free outing."

Val had been paid up until the harrowing before he left.

Valorei sits at the bar, this time reading a book rather than scribbling on some form of parchment, glances over at Wendall, "I wouldn't say you are so useless my young friend! Not every excursion leads to glory and by doing this small outing we learned several things."

Valorei sets his book down, giving his full attention to the young mage, "In fact I have need of your services myself, after witnessing your earlier... troubles, as well as your spell choice in the field I believe I have a trade that could very well benefit us both! I propose a trade of sorts, your sleep spell for my shield spell, a spell that was designed to form around the caster, acting a barrier against physical intrusion which could greatly add to your already wondrous elfin mail that resides under your clothing. With so much protection I don't see how any of the creatures we've seen so far, aside from that druid, could get the jump on you!"

Valorei then turns his book around on the bar, so that the words of magic are no longer upside down, not that it matters to anyone without magical talent, and gives Wendall a smirk, "What say you?"

Valorei calls out to Varas in the tavern, "Do let me know when that drinking contest is on, I am looking forward to showing you that a dwarf is not the only race that can hold their liquor!"

Wendall cheers up a little but sneers at Ghrym.

Well Val, up until now Varas, Olympia, and Dorvor have been my shield. Do you have anything else? I could use that Read Magic spell that I gave you so much grief about instead if you'd like to do a trade.

Valorei gives Wendall a sly smirk, "Ah, It seems the ability to read ancient and magical languages has not passed you by after all it seems hehe." he flips to another page of the book, "You have yourself a deal my friend."

Whats the procedure in labyrinth Lords for learning spells from spell books?

Olympia shakes her head and looks encouragingly at Wendall. "I'm sure it happens to everyone their first time. We could wait a little bit, and try again...?"

Unfortunately swapping between two spell books is logistically tough: it takes two days of steady work with both spellbooks in hand to transcribe a spell from one to another, per spell level being transcribed.

Thus, you would need to do that twice, first to add a new spell to Wendall's book and then to add a new spell to Val's, for a total of four days to make the switch.

You could do both simultaneously if you were both starting new spellbooks, however.

In addition to the time: it takes 50gp to create the special ink required per spell level to write the spell down.

I'll add these specifics to the How This Works thread.

Wendall had a deal with Melvin for a spell trade. It's back in the tavern thread somewhere...

I remember him reading a book for me but not the trade. Do you remember which spell it was? If it was Read Magic, perhaps we could trade another?

well damn... so It would be best to do this after the harrowing festival? Sounds like we would need 4 days of just work, 6-8 days for Wendall if he wants to do the trade with Melvin afterwards or beforehand....

If the Wendall pays Melvin enough gold to pay for a scroll (and for the inscription fee), Melvin could inscribe the spell of the Wendall's choice into the scroll that the Wendall could read. The Wendall could go off adventuring while Melvin inscribes the scroll. When the Wendall comes back, he can take the scroll and copy the spell into his spell book at his leisure.

If I read/recall the costs & rules properly, it would cost 75g in materials to create the scroll, and Melvin would charge 25g. A cheap price for a scroll with a brand new spell.
