[Completed] - Varas/Watchtowers II - 21 March, 1 VC

#1 Post by Keehnelf »

This expedition headed northwest from Vaul on the morning of March 21st, led by the veteran explorer and expedition-leader Varas. The party included:

Varas
Olympia
Harold
The Wendall
Dorvar
Valorei
Varcand

The purpose was to visit the second watchtower out to attempt another meeting with Mr. M to deliver the Duke's message, while stopping by The Wendall's tower in the interim to clear out the basement.

Wendall gets up early on the 21st and looks for his friends.

Ok! Does everyone have about ten days worth of rations each for the trek? If we make it to our tower without being molested by the denizens of the moors, perhaps I could just put that bug in the basement to sleep and take care of it myself so you poor souls won't have to get your hands dirty. I would hate for Horold and Varas to have to do something without getting paid for it.

Then the next morning, after a restful sleep for ourselves thanks to my bringing extra comfort items last trip, we can set out for the second tower.

Valorei will pick up a combination of fresh rations and trail rations and some that he may need before heading out to the tower.
Fresh x3 (6s)
Trail x7 (3g 5s)
Rope, hemp 50ft (1g)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When meeting up with everyone and beginning to head off towards the towers, "So then! From what I gathered it seems you all had already searched the first tower, correct? Perhaps you can bring me up to speed on what you found or encountered while there?"
Varcand arrived in Vaul well-provisioned. He shows up in the morning with a mule laden with supplies.
On the way out of town, Olympia shouts a quick prayer over the future site of the Chapel of Fortis. She also buys all the rations she has coin for, leaving her with a single copper. Having seen just how dangerous the wilds can be, she has prayed to her god for the ability to heal any harm that comes to her or her friends.
4 rations - deducted 9sp 6cp. The radiant of Fortis has exactically one copper left to her name!
Ohh! I just came up with another idea. Cast the spell on Varas and put HIM down into the basement with the bug. That might be funny? Wendall seems to be starting to take the ribbing more personal now.
I honestly don't know what you guys are bitching about! I'm paying all the money for a place for US to all sleep comfortably out in the wild. Even if it is only for one night each way. I never said The Tower Wendall was all mine. You can all use it anytime you want, THATS WHY I GAVE YOU GUYS THE KEYS! Remember? Geeeez!
Varas hides his smirk from Wendall. He enjoys winding him up almost as much as he enjoys ale.
Valorei watches the two seudo-argue curiously, "So Wendall, and I suppose by association the group present, minus me of course, are land owners now? I am sure that has to cost no small amount of coin! You all have certainly done well for yourselves in such a short time, it makes me glad to have met such bold adventurers!" He gives everyone a happy smile accompanied by a simple joyful tune that he hums as they travel towards the tower.
When we get to the spot we were ambushed by goblins that wanted to take Dorvar back with them, the dwarf will decapitate the goblin bodies and put the heads on the custom-made dowels he purchased for that very reason. From here on out, the plan is to do the same with every goblin we kill, assuming he has something to put the heads on and we have the opportunity to do so. Obviously Dorvar will not do that if the party gets into a pitched battle and attempts a strategic retreat or something similar.
March 21, 1 VC - 11:50am
Random Wilderness Encounter [1d6] = 1
Wilderness Encounter Results [2d6] = 6
goblins [2d4] = 4, wolves [1d3] = 3
Surprise roll: Monsters: [1d6] = 1, Party: [1d6] = 5
OK, this is an interesting one.
The party heads northwest, attempting to locate the spot that they went a bit off-course last time that ended with them in the dangerous battle against a large number of goblins and wolves. After a few hours, they catch sight of a landmark that will lead them directly to the spot, close to the entrance to a dead-end steep-sided valley. They approach the area and find the ground still murky with blood and churned up from the battle a few days, prior, but no bodies.
Scouting the area, Varas locates the trouble--a patrol of four goblins with three wolf mounts has moved the bodies into the steep-sided valley and is busy working on a large fire, the bodies all stacked nearby. They appear to be so short-handed that they have not set a watch, so the party is able to approach within surveillance range unseen.
"I hope you brought a lot of wooden spikes" whispers Varas to Dorvar. He turns to The Wendall, Valorei and Valcand. "We should probably save at least one of your sleep spells for the worm in the tower" suggests the tall thief. "If you want to unleash your spell, I'll fire an arrow at whatever remains standing."
Varas moves in front of The Wendall to protect him from missile fire. If the spellcasters use a sleep spell, he fires an arrow at those remaining standing. He'll target a goblin first; if all fall, he targets the weakest remaining wolf.
Shockingly enough, Varcand doesn't know Sleep.
Varcand will wait for the inevitable sleep spell, and cast Charm Person on one of the Goblins if any remain conscious.
"I will try and ensorcell one of the riders."
Or should I cast the Charm first, to reduce the pool of Sleep targets? Does Sleep even work that way?
Sleep affects up to 2d8 hit dice of monsters in line of sight that are near one another, starting with the lowest hit die creatures.
It will not affect friendly targets unless it runs out of hit dice to target, and then it will start with the lowest-level friendly target.
Sorry to put a damper on everything but... Val doesn't know sleep either, researcher and all... went with read magic...
Valorei sadly shakes his head before commenting quietly, "It seems we are out of luck on my end, I do not know the sleep spell... Shall we attempt to lure the creatures to an area where we can ambush them? Who among us has a bow? We can have someone taunt the creatures into chasing them and then jump them as they get within the area, or we can simply ambush them here while we have the surprise..." he leaves the comment open for anyone with another suggestion or questions for him.
