Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
While I am normally of MrHemlock's mindset, in this campaign's case it is fine from my perspective to read all the posts. You can see the story unfurl and appreciate it more, in my opinion. There are interesting layers to see, and multiple perspectives on the same person/event (e.g. Timothy Carver) that add to the game. These aspects (along with pictures), in my mind, substitute for the lack of props which are common in FtF gaming. In fact, I see how PbP allows for this deeper exploration of events than it does in FtF. So to get the big picture and most enjoy the game, I feel that reading it all is the best approach. Of course your personal preference may differ. You are all experienced players so I doubt there will be any meta-gaming.

I agree with Grog, I enjoy reading the other sides. The trick is just to not meta game...

Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
By the way, since we're not around a table, I wanted to ask everyone a bit about themselves. When did you first read Lovecraft? Myself, it was in high school sophomore year, which is when I started playing CoC (having done fantasy and SF games until then.) Though I stopped gaming later in college, I continued to read Lovecraft and collected the Arkham first editions. Today Cthulhu seems an industry unto itself, though I think it dilutes the mystique. Now after 25 years I've come back to gaming and CoC. My best Lovecraftian memory is not from any story, but it was my then 7-year-old daughter doing a gravestone rubbing of Lovecraft's grave in Swan Point Cemetery. Funny and weird.

Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
I only started a couple of days ago. I can't call myself a fan cause it would be a slap in the face to true fans such as yourself, but I read a couple of his short stories and I couldn't stop, I even ordered a semi complete collection of his writings from amazon since I enjoy reading more when I hold a physical version of the book rather than read it online. But I would like to thank you for pointing out a master of words, I wouldn't have known about him if it weren't for this game

Unfortunately I have never read any lovecraft books, or at least finished any. It isn't due to lack of quality, stuff is awesome.

Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
I first heard of Lovecraft when I was in junior high school thanks to Iron Maiden's use of his quote from The Nameless City on their album cover. I don't recall when I first read any of his works. I'm sure I must have read something by him around that time. That would have been 85/86. Though I was not much of reader back then so I really didn't think I read more than one of his stories. It wasn't until about 10 years ago that I read the majority of his fictional works.

I first read Lovecraft when I was in college, about 15 or so years ago. I picked up a collection of his short stories, including the eponymous The Call of Chthulu. I loved it and have read a fair number of the stories. I also recently rewatched John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, which is a cool Lovecraftian horror flick.

Yes that was a good movie.
I've added game resource background on 'The Art and Science of Investigation' and 'Forensics' in the Encyclopedia Britannica thread.
I should be getting to the next batch of posts today.

I found this great adaptions of "The Statement of Randolph Carter". When you watch turn on the captions for subtitles.

That's an interesting take on the short story. Lovecraft is pretty popular overseas I've heard.

And upon googling, I see it's of course been done.

Yeah, I've found the stats for the whole gang online.
The guys at One Shot did an Actual Play. They even did the voices. Very funny.

Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
Lovecraft aficionados may recognize the use of actual story character or place names in our game. They of course don’t necessarily have the same meaning as in the stories they appeared. Leng’s Chinese Food Emporium is not, for example, a gateway to Leng. Though perhaps Erlich Zann did open a music shop in Providence.

Have a pleasant Solstice! Here are some dark chants adapted from popular yuletide songs, from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society...

I visited SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida today. When I was on line for forty minutes waiting to get in to see Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin® all I could think of was seeing the great Cthulhu trapped in ice.

Re: Howie's Speakeasy - "Come on in"
I just realised that Thomas and Arthur Shelby joined the campaign, they are probably behind it all, the Peaky Blinders are always up to no good
