The group has circled the area in a broad sweep to try and get a good sense for the lay of the land, and to determine if there were any landmarks or other points of interest they were missing, and has begun to head back eastward when they spot a broad, shallow valley running north-south across their path. A section of the valley wall has washed out under the not-so-tender-but-definitely-consistent ministrations of the spring rain, revealing a large amount of the bedrock beneath. Near the bottom of the valley wall, that bedrock has further eroded and a cave-like opening can be seen, perhaps large enough for a human to enter.

Constance dips her pole towards the hillside to indicate the opening. "Ooh, a cave! How mysterious!" she coos, and approaches the entrance. As the second-smallest of the group, she sizes up the hole and wonders if she'll fit inside.

March 29, 1 VC - 3:00pm

As Constance approaches the entrance, she becomes aware of a large number of paw prints in the slightly muddy ground of the valley floor, leading toward and away from the cave opening. She is also struck by a powerful, musty animal odor emanating from within.

The smell is quickly accompanied by growling.

Adrik reaches out and snatches Constance back from the opening, interposing himself between her and the opening, his shield raised defensively, his war hammer low and by his side - but still available for a hip-checked swing if necessary.

"Shh," he says, moving slowly, nudging her backwards. "Let's not spook the beast."

Krysta steps up alongside Adrik, mace in both hands.
"Easy now," she whispers. "Back up slow...but be ready."

[Mister-Kent]

Constance creeps backwards, one hand firmly on her walking stick and the other clasped over her mouth.

[Keehnelf]

Shadows move in the depths of the cave opening as slowly, one after another, five wolves emerge, lips curling, snarling and growling at the party.

"Pelor preserve us!" Krysta hisses...as she grips her mace a little tighter, expecting the wolves to charge any second...

[AleBelly]

"Light of Veles protect us!" bellows the tall portly priest, as he directs his spell at the eyes of the most dangerous-looking wolf, trying to blind it.

[Mister-Kent]

Constance unclasps her hand from her mouth and whistles, long and low, casting her much-practiced sleeping spell soon as the wolves are within her range!

Initiative: [1d6] = 6

Sudden Round One Summary:

Two of the wolves (numbers 2 and 4, let's say) save vs. Constance's magic, while Crivit's Light spell manages to blind one of the ones who goes to sleep (#1, the toughest with the most HP).

The two remaining wolves leap out to attack Adrik and Crivit, as they are the most conspicuous. The dwarf's attacker is easily turned aside, while Crivit requires his shield to keep himself safe.

"Veles, guide my hand!" cries Crivit at he swings his war hammer at the wolf attacking him.

Oops, yes. Was posting from my phone and missed it.

"Oh my!" Constance peeps as she sees the effects of her spell. She slips a long dart from her belt, and in a surprisingly fluid motion hurls it to one of the still active wolves (the fourth one).

Dart Attack: [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13
Dart Damage: [1d4] = 2

Trying to help Adrik, Krysta swings her mace at the wolf attacking him. Unfortunately, with all the snarling and spell-casting and jostling around, she easily misses the beast.

Mace Attack & Dmg: [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6, [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7

Standing side by side with Krysta, Adrik growls and turns his forearm just a tad, jabbing one rounded edge of his shield into the beast's slavering jaws. "Bite down on that one, why don't you?" he shouts, taunting the creature, all the while bringing his war hammer around to bear. When the wolf does, indeed, bite down on the shield, shaking its head this way and that, he gives it a resounding wallop right on top of its skull!

Wolf vs. Crivit [1d20] = 7, damage [1d6] = 3

Neither of the wolves succeed in their attacks against the party, while Crivit and Constance together manage to take down the wolf attacking the portly priest. Meanwhile, Adrik slams the wolf attacking him about a bit, though not enough to finish it off.
