1e AD&D looking for players [CLOSED]

#1 Post by Nidhogg »

Hello everyone,

I stumbled on these forums a few weeks ago. Let me first introduce myself, as I think I have a different gaming background than most of the gamers here. I’m relatively young (mid-twenties), and live in the Netherlands (Europe!) and I’ve been playing and DM’ing Roleplaying games for the past 10 years. I started with 3rd edition D&D and moved on to 4e, Mutants and Masterminds, but spent most of my gaming time as Storyteller for White Wolf games such as Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf. Although I’m still new to the “Old School” 1st AD&D, I’d like to give DM’ing a game a try and was hoping to be able to start a game here and find some people interested to play.

I’ve got quite a lot experience DM’ing, also play by post, but the rules of 1st AD&D are relatively new for me (and I guess I'll have to see how the dice rollers work on this forum as well). Now, before I’ll go into more detail about the game, I’d like to apologize in advance for any spelling mistakes I’m going to make. Since I’m not a native English speaker, I’m bound to make some awful mistakes in all the writing I do. Please feel free to correct me. That’s the only way I’m going to learn.

Now, for the game I was thinking about maybe 5 players. I’m a very easy-going DM (or that’s what I try to be). My games tend to be rules light and I really want it to be a very light-hearted easy going game. Although I’ll try to follow the rules (and will never break them on purpose or cheat), I find the story and the fun more important. Ultimately, we’re just here to have fun, that’s the most important thing. The campaign will be just a bunch of short “one Shot” adventures, loosely connected, most of them homebrew or inspired (and adapted) from different published adventures from different sources, set in a homebrew, but quite your standard D&D fantasy setting, just the stuff people expect.

I'm not sure what type of house rules you guys prefer or use. But one houserule I usually use for play by post games is using group initiative, since that speeds things up quite a bit. But I'm fine with doing it differently if you guys dislike that.

Well, I’m looking forward to hearing from you and see if anyone would be interested in something like this.. I’ve been lurking on this site for a few weeks and reading the posts and you seem like a very friendly community. :D

Cheers,

Nidhogg

EDIT: I think it might be a good idea to post this also in the first post of the thread: This is the basic premise of the adventure.

Springrite
It’s Springrite. Each year with the coming of the spring, the elves celebrate the festival of Springrite. A great feast, full of dancing, singing and drinking, all week long. From all over the world, people come to the elvish cities to witness and participate in the Springrite. So do you. You’ve come to the lands of Alfheim and the city of Eolo, home to the Sylvan Elves and their Queen Loreley. The game starts at the end of the festival, when, as it happens each year, the festival is concluded with a traditional great hunt. When morning breaks, all the elves and all the foreigners who’ve enjoyed the festivities, gather in front of the city gates and take their place in one of the many hunting parties, setting out into the woods searching for game. That’s when you guys meet for the first time, when you take part in the same hunting party. This year the elves will face much worse things than deer and boar during the hunt though… It's spring. The buds are sweet, the water sparkles, everyone is joyful... Many elves will die, when an ancient enemy returns.

The structure of the first adventure will be partly based on an adventure for The One Ring roleplaying game called "Words for the Wise". Don't look it up if you don't know it!

Ghost of Marx, that you?

Ehiker133 here from Ways of the Earth's game on ODD74. Welcome to the US forums!

You should have no trouble finding enough people here for a game. We've had quite a few new players sign up recently, so the interest is certainly there...

Per my signature, I have a bit on my plate here, but let me know if you need to fill a last spot; I'd be happy to join one of your games.

Cheers,

Al

Welcome, Nidhogg.

Like Alethan, my plate is a little full, but I'm sure you'll be able to find enough players to fill out a game. I know I'd be interested in lurking. ;)

Don't worry about your grammar. Your sentence structure and spelling are better than that of most American adults! I'm sure you'll make a great DM, and you have an interesting story. I always like to hear from younger players who come around to the older editions, as they usually end up preferring them to the newer stuff!

If you decide to start a game, please send me a PM with the game name and I'll get it started for you.

Terribly sorry to have to disappoint you, but I'm not the person you're confusing me with. :)

Right, so, a bit more concrete on the game:

This would be the premise of the first adventure:

Springrite
It’s Springrite. Each year with the coming of the spring, the elves celebrate the festival of Springrite. A great feast, full of dancing, singing and drinking, all week long. From all over the world, people come to the elvish cities to witness and participate in the Springrite. So do you.

When I have enough people interested, I'll pm ToniXX. :)

Nidhogg,

Groeten en welkom.

Nice to meet a fellow European on the Unseen Servant forums; our continent may be going down the tubes but at least we can still PbP some AD&D. Don't worry, the Americans won't bite. As you can see they're awesome folks. :D

Please count me in as a player for your oude vijand van de elfen game.

And if you also want to take the role of a player and not just a GM, I am recruiting for my own game right now: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=635#p13721

Zeb!!!! I knew you'd be back!

Hope all is well man.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Hehe, it was actually one of your posts over at DF that caught my eye and brought me here to check what was going on.

Everything fine here, plenty of work & some beer - or the other way around... It's been a while and thought it would be nice to do some gaming again. What about you, all cool?

Great to have you as well, zebediah!

Now, I'm not sure what's the custom on these forums. Should we wait with character generation until we have the minimum amount of players, should generation take place here or should I already move to a special subforum for the game?

Anyway, what character creation is concerned:

All standard races are allowed (so that means dwarfs, elves, gnomes, half elves, halflings half-orcs and humans.), All standard classes are allowed (assassin, cleric, druid, fighter, illusionist, magic user, paladin, ranger, thief), but racial restrictions do apply (unless you can think of a very awesome reason why your character should be the exception) and to keep things simple I'd rather not use multiclassing. We'll use 4d6, dropping the lowest dice for ability score generation. You can decide which scores will go with which ability. No rerolling, unless you can't play the race or class you want with those abilities, then you get to roll again.

When creating a character, apart from a sheet, I’d also like short answers to the following questions. Don't worry, one or two sentences will be enough. :)

1. What does your character look like?
2. What does he or she do (for a living, with her life)?
3. What drives your character? What are his goals, his ambitions?
4. Why has your character come to the elvish festival of Springrite? To experience the elvish culture, to drink and party, or maybe to look at all the pretty elf ladies dance?
5. Give me a secret of the character, something she doesn't want others to know about her.
6. Give me some general information on what her perspective is on elves. Does she like them, does she hate them?
7. Tell me about 1 good experience from your characters past and 1 bad one.
8. What are your goals as a player for the character? What would you like to see done/happen to him in the game. It’s okay if you don’t know an answer. It’s okay for people to just enter and say “I’ll just enjoy the ride.” But if you have any wishes and tell me, I could adjust the story to it.
9. Tell me about 2 NPC that are in some way linked to your character, either as a friend or as an enemy.

Hello Nidhogg,

I'm a midwestern American that is new to this forum but I've played both 1E/2E AD&D my entire adult life. It's been years since I played in a 1E game and the idea intrigues me greatly! Just PM me if you will consider my participation.

Thanks!

I would counsel waiting until you have what you consider the minimum number of players show their interest, then contact ToniXX and set up your game forum complete with a character generation thread. How many interested players are there so far?

Thanks, that was what I thought. Three people have shown interest: Rfrahm87, Vargr1105 and zebediah.
Also, Alethan said he already had too much on his plate, but might want to join if we need to fill one more spot.

I'd prefer to have a group of 4-6 people. So, I hope to wait a little longer and hopefully find 1 or 2 more players and then we can get the game forum started. :)

Nice to meet you, Onlyme! And great you want to join the game. :)

I guess this means we have the minimum amount of players we need! That went fast, suddenly!

So, I'll PM ToniXX to set up the game forum. (Look out for a game called 'The Elf Campaign' 8-) ). I'll add some threads with setting information (a map and such) and a thread for character generation and one for friendly off topic banter. Meanwhile, there is still room for two more players, so if anyone is still interested, please post here or PM me. It will likely take a week still before the real game actually starts anyway and we can always add players a bit later.

Did I say, "too much"?

If so, I just meant, "a lot".

:D

Happy to jump in if you don't meet the 4-6 player desire, Nidhogg.
