Okay, that is heinous. Can we get LOS for a Sleep spell? It seems like maybe one is called for.
Sure. Quint's got line of sight now, and I'll also allow those in the back row to switch spots with those in the front as their movement.
I believe we had Quint use his Sleep against the orcs earlier. He only memorized that once, his other 1st level spell is Shield. I guess I didn't think that one out very well...
At calls for spells and fire, Tev pulls a flask of oil from his backpack and hurls it at a beetle, motioning to Quint to toss his torch into the tussle.

Quint, too, pulls a flask of oil from his gear and tosses it to a spot that will widen the pool created by Tev's oil. He follows that up with the torch he held to set it all alight.

Chaos reigns as the adventurers jockey for position. The beetles rush forward, intent on turning Rhys and Thurgan into chew toys, but before they get a chance to Severi and Quint switch places, and the air thrumms with thaumaturgical vibrations as Severi's sorcerous sleep causes all six to slumber.
Severi shakes his head. "I move that we withdraw and return to the city. This gnome is wounded unto death but still lives, we have several highly valuable gems, and our expedition is therefore a success. I suggest we return at a later date, on a mission more purely oriented towards bloody revenge against these proto-orcs. I will not rest properly until they are exterminated."
Free of the restricting crud, Tev moves quickly to dispatch the beetles, and will offer what assistance he can to his companions, though he is loathe to touch the stuff.
Thankfully, the spittle does not seem to share the same corrosive properties of whatever substance the columns were composed of. It is hard and unyielding, bonding to metal, flesh and cloth alike. Given some time it could likely be chipped away using brute force. Quint, however, has heard tales of certain substances that can be removed through judicious applications of one liquid or another. Alcohol tends to be the most common substance used.

"If anyone has a flask or two of wine, it might aid somewhat in the removal of this substance. A more distilled spirit would be ideal, but I don't expect anyone has any."
As the discussion continues, Quint follows up on Severi's suggestion. "I have no problem with a retreat and and later expedition. I, too, need to study my spells and be better prepared for next time. Obviously our Sleep spells are most effective for the time being."

I'm guessing the deafening silence indicates that no one has any alcohol to use as a solvent.

With a shrug, Quint merely continues to pick and chip at the solidified goo on his own clothes, whistling softly as he does so. "Well, something to pick up before we come back then."
"Perhaps we should seek to make our exit," Tev suggests. "I understand the temptation to rid yourself of that filth, but the beetles may yet win if they keep us here while their masters trap us."
Rhys will spend any time during rest periods chipping away at the gray substance until they reach town, when he will purchase a bottle of the strongest spirits he can find to remove the rest of it.
Thurgan will keep chipping at the solidified goo and when he reaches town he buys three bottles of strong spirits, one to clean the goo off the others to drink.
The adventurers retrace their steps, returning to the first floor of the Bathhouse without incident. The afternoon sun shines through the open windows at a low angle, indicating it is perhaps five in the afternoon.
Man, you guys have gotten pretty lucky with the wandering monster checks. I'm guessing the plan is to return to Threshold with Ono? BTW, the spittle will wear away at the rate of one "hit" per day, so if a PC was hit with two globs it will take two days to wear away.
The rest of the day passes uneventfully. The adventurers retrieve their mounts, which do not appear to have been molested, and set out south for Threshold, Ono switching between riders. They make it about five miles before night falls and the companions decide to set camp for the night. The hours pass uneventfully; there is always a gentle breeze on the plains, that helps relieve the summer heat somewhat and has the added benefit of keeping the insects down.
Klarmont 7, AC 1000
After two hours riding the adventurers strike the trail leading back to the Duke's road. An hour or so after taking a brief lunch the sky begins to darken, and the wind picks up slightly. They continue to ride east; it is not long before thunder can be heard rumbling in the distance, and lightning forks to the ground before them. A steady rain begins to fall.
This occurs in hex 51.03 here: viewtopic.php?p=35909#p35909 I just need to know if you guys are going to ride through the storm or try and seek shelter. There is a chance -- albeit fairly small - of being struck by lightning.
