If this boat isn't getting too crowded, I'd love to join in. I had a some of the books, back in the day, but only made characters—never actually played.

Heh, never too crowded. If Keehnelf caps this game, if someone else comes along and wants to GM another one. Well, who'da thunk Traveller would be this popular. Nice!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

I've run FTF d&d games with twelve players for several years in the past so I'm sure I can make this one work...

While I put things together, can I get a show of hands from those interested what keywords you most want to associate with the game (pick no more than 3):

Fighting
Military
Exploration
Merchant
Science
Diplomacy
Courier
Criminal
Mercenary
Survival
Mystery
Action
Horror
Epic
Personal
Political

I think I'll have a good window this afternoon to get a bunch of stuff together, unearthed my CT stuff last night and was amazed by its good condition-comes from never playing it as a teen I suppose :)

I've got a general framework already in mind, and the rest is up in the air but this is what it'll generally look like:

I plan to generate my list of Core PCs based on who gives me their keywords. I will use those to do two things-

1. Tally up which ideas are present and which seem to be popular to generate the overall tone and some features of the 'metaplot'.
2. Figure out a sketch of a subplot for each core PC that fits within the larger setting based on the keywords specific to that player and the PC they end up with.

Because character creation in CT is governed largely by chance, I'll be posting a long list of roles and hooks that you guys will take turns selecting once you have your characters generated. Learning who your character is in CT is often a process of reading between the lines of what scores and items you end up with, and this lottery-type process will help that and tie the pcs more closely to the meta fiction while allowing a lot of latitude.

So you understand my meaning, two sample items on this list could be...

Ship's chief engineer

And

Blackmailed a high-ranking regional official but has nothing to show for it but trouble.

In either cases, the details would be at the discretion of the player who picks it so they can develop a story that fits their interests.

I hope that makes sense-I hope to be up and running sometime next week. Today I'll try to get the forum started and will hope to have my primer up as well before the weekend starts for me. Anyone who wants to get a jump start on the process can ship me 6 rolls of 2d6 via PM.

Thanks everyone for their interest.

'Traveller' I know.
'The Unseen Servant' I am clueless about except that a couple of hours ago a message from "rredmond" was posted to 'Citizens of the Imperium' (COTI).

So a simple question: Can anyone read the game when it starts or is a 'keyword' (whatever that is) required?
At this point I am simply curious about this site and not really looking for a game.

Hey, good questions! Any user can view games once they're under way. The keywords mentioned above are just for me to help organize what people's interests are in this campaign and to confirm that they actually want to be included now that things are moving. So you are free to follow along and lurk (and send me PMs with friendly suggestions of what I'm doing wrong :) ) using the link in my signature that will take you straight to the campaign's forum.

Welcome to US!

Welcome--I'll add you to the group. Feel free to PM me six 2d6 rolls if you want to get a jump start on character creation. I won't hold your hand if you have the CT rules and don't want me to, but I'm glad to guide you through the process via PM if you've lost your stuff in the meantime or don't remember how it works!

OK, I'm getting close to the point at which I'll want to close up the stream of new players so here's some quick bookkeeping:

Confirmed Participants:
greyWolfVT
ybn1197
max_vale
MrHemlocks
Baron
Pulpatoon
atpollard
spanningtree

Expressed Interest but Not Confirmed:
DadsAngry
grognardsw

If you feel you've been put into the wrong category, PM and I'll see if I can fix things. If you've not contacted me here or via PM and are interested in the game, please let me know soon! If I move everyone from the bottom category to the top, I am absolutely 100% out of room in the game.

Thanks, everyone.
