Meanwhile, Kernodle uses his natural familiarity with this sort of underground location to perform a cursory check for trap doors or other unnatural features.

Mulvey calls over to the others. There's a steep passage leading down to a pool, but I can't see what's in it. I'm wondering if we can tie a lantern to the end of the rope to see what's down there. I could follow ten feet behind...

"Or you could use one of these," Abe says, pulling one of the beetle glands out of the sack. "Just toss it down there. Should give you a good 10' radius of light to see by. We might even consider going back to that other beetle and getting the glands from it..."

Kernodle casually mentions,

Doesn't appear to be anything of importance here. I suggest we follow along that way

"Another great idea, Abe" says Mulvey, nodding. "No chance of the light source being quenched by the water. The slope does appear to dead end at the bottom, but I can't tell for sure. We might be wasting a beetle gland on nothing if we toss it down there, but I still suggest giving it a shot."

Mulvey performs an initial assessment of the exit in the southeast corner of the otherwise empty cavern. He calls over to the others. "There's a steep passage leading down to a pool, but I can't see what's in it. I'm wondering if we can tie a lantern to the end of the rope to see what's down there. I could follow ten feet behind..." Abe retrieves one of the recently removed fire beetle glands from his large sack. "Or you could use one of these," he says, before adding: "We might even consider going back to that other beetle and getting the glands from it..." While Abe and Mulvey discus their plans to light the area below, Kernolde and Luken fail to detect anything out of the ordinary in the rest of the cavern.

Abe hands Mulvey one of the glands and watches as the elf sends it tumbling down the passage which angles downward at a significant angle; the decline is estimated to be approximately 40-degrees. The gland makes good progress as it clanks down the stone chute for nearly its entire 20' length before catching a jagged edge near the bottom which sends the roundish gland into a spin. The gland begins to wobble and roll in a circle, reminiscent of an egg being spun in the 'Keep on the Table' child game popular in Seaside.

The group watches the slowly circling gland with eager anticipation as it angles towards the pool Mulvey referenced.

Splash!

The light disappears upon hitting the water, but it did allow the group a chance to briefly see what was beneath them before doing so.

Abelard listens to see if he can hear any other movement in the water after the gland rolls in, wondering if it drew the attention of anything.

After he has listened, he says, "We should definitely go back for the other glands, then. We're just now down to two, and you see how useful they might be..."

We best go back now before "back" becomes a trek. Luken will say with a shrug.

If nobody disagrees, then Abe moves to head back to the first cave to retrieve the three glands.

While he is there, he grabs a small sack from the pile of gear and puts it in his pack.

Mulvey will linger at the top of the gulley for 20-30 seconds, listening to determine if the ruckus roused anything from the depths. He'll also try to assess the situation with his infravision. If nothing of note happens, he'll follow Abe back to the entrance cavern and pick up two more torches from the deceased. He now appreciates how handy they could be.

Kernodle will follow as well. He will then mention that there were other directions to try.

Abe and Mulvey listen to see if the disruption of a rolling beetle gland caused a reaction below, but no noise or movement is detected. "We should definitely go back for the other glands, then. We're just now down to two, and you see how useful they might be..." Abe says after not detecting anything in the cavern with a pool below. "We best go back now, before "back" becomes a trek." Luken says with a shrug.

With their overall progress somewhat limited at this point, the party is able to retrace their steps with relative ease. They quickly locate the pile of rubble which provides them access into entry cavern. There, they retrieve the three glands from the original fire beetle and Abe takes the opportunity to grab a small sack from their surplus of supplies while Mulvey adds two torches to his personal inventory.

Who's carrying the three new glands? Abe?

Abe stuffs two of the glands in the small sack and passes it off to Mulvey for his use. He adds the third gland back to his own sack.

"Ok, let's head back out now. Only, if we're going to go down that slope, we might see if one of these unfortunates had some rope with them and use that, in case we need to get back up. Or... we could always turn right as we make it out of the rubble there."

"Let's make for the rubble and take the north fork" suggests Mulvey. "Didn't seem like there was much down the chute past the second fire beetle we killed, and we're meant to be going up, not down anyway."

Kernodle speaks up...I have felt this way was probably the smarter route all along. I dont know why I let that elf lead us to a bottomless pit. I'll know better next time. He points toward the northern hallway.

Luken leads the party back through the rubble and to the right branch of the 'Y' intersection; the path previously explored by Kernodle. Just as the dwarf reported, this northern branch leads to yet another 'Y' intersection.

To the left is another 'Y' intersection. To the right appears a single passage leading northeast.

Luken squints at the passages before him: Three possibilities gents... maybe we start to the right? As good as any.

Abe shrugs, "Seems as good a way as any, unless one of the others appears to lead up..."
